~ State of Play | June 4, 2025 ~

I can see some people not being as interested in this showcase if they aren't too much into Japanese games, but there is a lot of variety here.

Apparently, it seems like people only want AAA still despite the whole AAA is dead, indie gaming is the best. There were a lot of smaller scoped games shown that personally looked great. This showcase reminded me more of older Sony who didn't only rely on blockbusters. Stuff like Lumines, Hotshot Golf, Sword of the Sea, the new SUDA51 game, Pragmata, and Hirogami are the kinds of games Sony used to put out all the time before the end of the PS4 generation. There were still bigger games like 007, which I thought looked great. It had a good balance between stylization and realism. It looked like a signature linear, single player narrative game with some stealth like you would expect from a Sony game.

If nothing in the showcase peeked your interest, I don't think it is gaming that is the issue.

Fucking garbage show. Knew I made the right choice not watching it. Trash games all around.

A 6/10 for me. Too many colorful games, not enough stuff for men that like blowing crap up. We finally get a Thief game and they change the protagonist, meaning she'll be yapping the whole dang time with hints while I'm trying to play. Either that, or my wife will be yapping about neglecting her and the kids while I play.

Why? There's tons of games every year and you sold it because you aren't getting a thing you specifically want? Did you do the infamous "switch to PC" lol
I already had a 4070ti pc. I sold my launch ps5 to a friend to put the money towards a PS5 pro, but when Pro released i felt pretty underwhelmed. Most games come to PC now anyway.

I picked up a Rog ally instead and having all my PC games portable and with cross save/progression is awesome. Nothing has tempted me to pick up a ps5,especially with the delay of gta6.

Some positive points

Japan Renaissance is in full force thank god
No gaas push whatsoever
Focus on gameplay centric games

Ill give the show a 7/10

It reminded me of good E3 shows minus the first party stuff

So sony might be healing and going into a new (old) direction

I got some optimism for the future. Little but is there.

I largely agree, except for the part about the Bond game. I thought it looked pretty dull. I'd need to see more gameplay.

I'm excited for more Bloodstained and it's great to see Arc taking over the Marvel tag fighter IP. My son and I will put some hours into that game.

It's hard not to expect the big megaton reveals though given Sony's history.

I had such low expectations going in that I'm pleasantly surprised by this State of Play.
Same. I was ready to be pessimistic and at least get a few laughs out of it, but this showcase reminded me of old Sony which I missed. There wasn't an overreliance on big hyperrealistic blockbusters. Even 007 had some style.

I grew up on PC and I have no desire to pay PC prices again. If my 1080/i7 can't play it, then I have plenty of other stuff to play on consoles now. PC gaming isn't very good anymore, imo. We used to get stuff you just couldn't get on consoles and it was worth the headache to get the game working.

Like it.

Probably not the best of all time, but it is definitely above what we have had for like 5 years.

And that "maybe" to Metal Gear Online.... LETS GOOOO

Is there a reason VR games have hands with no arms attached?
When you have arms, they don't always track properly so they look very janky in a lot of games. It is getting better (at least with Meta Quest 3). Still, when you actually play the games, you don't notice it as much.

just finished watching with a 10 mins lag. How was that not a total top-shelf banger of a show??? Sure to find out backtracking this thread

I disagree, but then I love Japanese games.
You really "love" the look of Pragmata? Bloodstained? They look pretty f-ing lame.

I know you've already professed a love for Nioh, but I just can't stand looking at those games anymore, and I would've confused this for Nioh 2 last gen.

That Mahvel game gonna be a huge hit, since people've been wanting a new Mahvel fighter for ages. Also figured at some point SIE'd try doing a fighting game, I mean they own half of EVO these days and invested in Capcom Cup for some years. Glad to see they're doing it with Arc Systems Works.

And Silent Hill F looks great, it's nailing the atmosphere of the original Team Silent titles quite well even if (so far) the story doesn't seem as "weird" or have that small town Americana feel. It doesn't need that latter component, though, FWIW. Also nice to finally see Pragmata again; I think the hook's gonna be that surrogate father/daughter dynamic in a sci-fi setting.

I don't think Yotei needed to be there though, if it was just a quick announcement for a (I assume dedicated) SOP in July. Just save a mention until closer to that SOP in July? Dunno about that announcement being in the SOP if it was just to have another announcement :P . Oh and I almost though Castlevania was back, but a new Bloodstained is the next best thing.

A lot of solid stuff shown off, I'd just have liked more gameplay for some of the titles. Lastly, no needless PC port announcements of 1P titles; people will argue "But the Mahvel game!"; yeah well, that's a Marvel license situation and a MP/GAAS-centric title, plus the FGC scene's grown a lot on PC the past several years. So that type of game Day 1 on both just makes sense these days, especially since we know it's not getting an arcade version (because arcades are mostly dead these days, very sadly).

Definitely a B+ SOP, I feel.

I guess I'm in for FFT remake, though I hoped for more ambitious graphics, not the upscaled pixel art shit again.

007 could be interesting, if the gameplay is tight.

Won't be hard for Microsoft to do a better showcase!

Well if past years are anything to go by, they'll have a lot of smoke & mirrors at the showcase and trick people into giving it 10/10s and A+ scores...

...then all the real info and drawbacks will spill out in the days following, causing the showcase to look a lot worst in hindsight, dragging the score down.

After 2023 I learned to never trust their showcases at face-value ever again. Even last year's had some of that crap, although it wasn't as bad as '23s (outside of the big downgrades for stuff like Forza Motorsport).

People need to be more patient with their 1st party output, they're still reformatting after the mess that the Cali locale, Hulst and Ryan made. It'll take some time before things will come to fruition.

Alright, after some proper 4K it's a solid B+

People who will watch trailers alone will be better served without the awkward pacing though.

Now for Sony to make this a win, make an agreement with the developers ofPRragmata, Silent hill f, Nioh, Romeo, 007 to be PS5 exclusive or at least time exclusives.
PS direct competetion already folded. Thers no real need for Sony to be spending money on exclusive deals that are temporary anyway.

Well you have a point, majority owns Ps5 and more will buy ps5, and well xbox series pretty much conceded, and Switch 2 is a not a competition but a different world, and PC well its always the PC master race.

It was light from a first-party perspective, but I suppose that is what's to be expected from State of Plays at this point.

I'm always happy to get more Astrobot content, so 5 more levels this month is a welcome addition. Ghost of Yotei deep dive next month, but not much today.

Sony Xdev collab with Arc System Works in Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls. Normally I would claim Marvel Fatigue, but this has a very distinct Japanese take on Marvel and I think it looks really dope. 4v4 battles will be very chaotic and the ability of Arc System Works to craft a great fighting game is never in doubt.

From a third-party perspective though, this show delivered an extremely high quality in my opinion and left me with a ton of stuff personally to look forward to for the rest of the year into next year:

- Lumines Arise from the makers of Tetris Effect
-Pragmata finally returned with gameplay footage and it looks very interesting
-Romeo is a Deadman from Grasshopper looks batshit insane
-Silent Hill f gameplay reveal looks about as creepy as one would expect
-Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles
-Everybody's Golf Hot Shots
-MGS Snake Eater Delta with a good amount of gameplay
-Nioh 3 announcement with a demo playable today
-Sword of the Sea, the new game from Giant Squid, basically looks like Journey, Abzu, and the Pathless all combined into one game
-IOI's 007 First Light looks excellent and I think will scratch a certain itch that Uncharted used to for me.

I'm always interested in the classic additions as well. Deus Ex for PS2, hopefully with trophy support. Twisted Metal 3 and 4 should be guaranteed to have platinums (I'm already hearing Rob Zombie's Dragula in my head). Resident Evil 2 and 3, would be great if they had trophy support, but I won't hold my breath since the first one and Dino Crisis do not.

Man, Sony get an easy ride from so many people 😂

Awful show. Especially at the traditional E3 time of big shows. Not going to maintain mass market interest with dross like that. I'll play Everybody's Golf because I always do, but I think it's PC too… As was their 'big reveal' at the end.

Seems like Sony has given up making games, no?

This post is literally the ragecrymeme.jpg in disguise

Didn't check it out. Saw some of the trailers elsewhere.

Were there a lot of games "made for the modern audience" or did they show variety?
From observation but I'm not 100, the colorful GAAS game, i did not see the title because I glance away, since im not interested with it. Im not into GAAS but I hope its not wokefied.

That's fine! The Bond game definitely had a distinct feel that I don't think would be to everyone's tastes. Bloodstained looked really cool. Was it co-op? The Marvel game got me really excited.

I can understand people wanting megatons, especially with Sony's poor output this Gen. I always loved Sony's smaller scope games alongside their bigger ones and thought they completely abandoned these kinds of games so this show was more positive for me. For people who mostly like their larger titles, and/or don't like Japanese games it was probably disappointing. Even then I appreciate the variety.

Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Pragmata, Bloodstained, ArcSys Marvel, Final Fantasy Tactics, new Grasshopper, and not a GaaS in sight, and somehow people are upset by this? I swear, people are way too cynical.

Kinda crazy we reached a point when Sony do an event to show 90% third party content and 10% their own games. When MS do an event to show 90% their own game studios and 10% third party (not made by them).

Kinda like Xbox becoming third party.

Is really depressing for Sony right now.
