Switch 2 Display Tested. Afterimage is due to "incredibly slow" response time

Serious question : I never understood the "tabletop" mode, what's it for exactly ? If I'm playing in hand-held mode and there's a table near me, I can just position my elbows on top of it as to not put strain on my arms but "tabletop" mode ? why have a tiny screen sit further away from me while holding the joycons in hand ? I really don't get it 🤔
It's for multiplayer...

The screen sucks. I say this as someone that bought one and is enjoying it. It's why I suggested buying a portable oled display if you need to do serious travel with this device only to be crapped on for that suggestion. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Congratulations. You're the less than 10%. You must feel extra special...

It's so fucking rich how Bergsala is blaming the retailers, "Oh they can set their own prices". Yeah but they can't take a loss cause you sell it to them for some ridiculous price. Can't believe they even try swinging that argument.

I ordered my MKW Bundle directly from Nintendo of Europe - Ireland for 5600 SEK, free shipping. So I recommend that if you're able.

I've been debating Germany vs Ireland. Guess it doesn't really matter? Do you get a Europlug AC adapter when ordering from Ireland? I know they don't use that, while Germany does.

It's just a much more relaxing setup, as your hands are free to be in whatever position feels most comfortable. I've used it on planes and such, it's great.

Why does it seem as if the people who care most about this issue are the ones who don't even own a Switch 2? Like, at this point the obsession with Switch 2 from haters is reaching Reddit levels of insane....

Never go full Reddit.

The snarkiness is a constant reminder of why I don't post here much. People complain about something, solution is presented only for people to continue to be jerks. The response time of 17 ms is objectively bad and we can admit that on an otherwise very good console.

Bro I don't count response times to measure how much "fun" I have...but in all seriousness, if it's truly an issue for you, I suggest you try to get a replacement unit (lie if you have to).

It sounds like some screens may actually have higher quality builds than others. I haven't noticed anything off on my screen ( and I looked, hard).

Some people are fine with laggy displays like you appear to be. Many including me are not. Either way it's a valid criticism of the console.

Like I said, some screens may have lower quality, yes. If you feel yours is a lower quality screen, seek a replacement.

C'mon man, this is literally the PS portal's 59.96Hz stutter fiasco all over again : "sucks to be you, I don't have the stutter"/"lol it's your McDonalds internet"/"Your Portal might be defective no stutter here"...

Why can't you just accept that Nintendo has cheaped out once again ? would it hurt you physically to do so ?

I got a S2 and I'm OK with it because I had absolutely zero expectations going in knowing this friggin' company, still, the receipts are there for all to see and yet, some hardcore fans like you will always refuse to admit such shortcomings.

These news have literally brought all the twisted fanboys out of the woodwork, I keep reading "this is the usual hate towards Nintendo", "My screen is fine this is blown out of proportion" and "People just hating" shit for 2 days straight now on Reddit, forums and even Facebook and I don't know whether I should cry or just laugh at the blind fanboy idiocy on display.

What the heck, is this really the dark place switch 2 owners have already got to? The crappy screen is a function of the hardware specs, not some 'build quality' that varies from console to console.

Shit, I knew I should have moved into the Copium selling business.

I just want to state some facts. The screen on the Switch 2 is rubbish in terms of motion blur. Here's a video from the first level of Donkey Kong Country Returns on both my Switch 2 and Switch OLED. You can barely read the tutorial prompt for what buttons to press while running - on the Switch 2 and take a look also at the grass in the immediate background. On the Switch 2 it's a smeary mess while running whereas on the OLED Switch it's as crisp as can be. This isn't even a particularly fast-paced game, either. It's so much worse in other titles. Both recorded at 60hz on my iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The switch 2 is a POS hardware wise like i said it was going to be before it launched and yet people defend it. You have a portable gaming system with a shit screen, that when docked plays ps4 pro quality games at best. If you think the screen quality on this device is good and that everything is good with the switch 2, then it's because your standards are in the toilet.

I played this game on the OLED and I'm pretty sure it has some motion blur by default, especially if you run across the screen while rolling with DK.

Lol, Gamespot made a post on Instagram/Facebook talking about the Switch 2 screen looking blurry and had been removed due backfiring in the comment section… After the DF video now every gaming press is magically noticing the blur 🤣.

I pulled up stage 1 real quick to see if it looked the way it does on my Switch 2 display the way it does in your video. Mine looks crisper than what you have.

Possibility this is a console specific problem based on manufacture origin?

Mine looks crisp AF, probably a LCD panel lottery… Iike the Switch 1.

That's what I am starting to think. Seems to be a bit more nuance to this display issue. I've had no issues so far looking for ghosting for the last hour across several different games. The vaseline smear isn't there for me on the games people are finding it with. Have to check Metroid Dread since I think that was mentioned as one.

There is a japanese review flying around claiming 16ms response times... The longer this goes on, the more I think this is some nasty display lottery, perhaps the worst in a consumer product in ages.
If this was the case, I'd happily trade mine for one with the issue to someone who got a lower quality one, I play only on TV, there are individuals trying to replicate the issue and they don't see any problem so this may be a non issue or just a few very unlucky people getting their with lower quality screen

If the Nintendo fan boys cant see through this, then they never will. Companies will always test the waters and see how much they can get away with, but this one of the most corpo greed practices Ive seen from a gaming company; trying to retain high profit margins by charging more money for a device and games, when one of the most important components is even worse than what the last system had? Nintendo needs to be humbled, but judging by 3M sales in a few days, chances are they wont.

Theres no way you guys who bought a Switch 2 didnt notice this.

Cracking Up Lol GIF
Honestly I didn't, played mostly MKW and on TV at that. But this is making me consider returning it tbh. Gonna do some testing with other games.

For the Switch 1 Nintendo used 4 different manufacturers suppliers for the LCD panels: JDI (Japan Display Inc), Innolux, AUO and Sharp. If i remember correctly the JDI had the best quality.

I have a launch Switch 1 and was never a fan of the LCD panel on that display, kept it docked mostly. The OLED was a much welcome upgrade on the display for the S1, but the S2 display I have is easily more crisp and better in the color department than the S1 LCD panel. Would need to play around more with the OLED model next to the S2 to see.

This is my main issue with the response. Fine, if you don't notice it but don't defend it. That's why Nintendo had the cheapest screen they could find. It may not be the most high end device out there but its not cheap. The measurements are similar to the Chinese knock offs. Same goes for the HDR situation which is worse. Its like buying a car that claims it can do 100 mph and it can only do 70 mph. I am sure many will say that's enough but its not what was advertised, and what incentive would a company have to follow through on claims if people defend it when it doesn't.
If it's a non issue for us and apart from that haters have been working extra these past few months, and there have been debunked fake news regarding Switch 2, fake drama, lots of concern trolling about shit like "you can't use your wiimotes on your Switch 2", etc, etc. You can't expect people to support complainers about anything, we're all tired of it.

There's a new trend were people shit on other people just by having the Switch 2 even IRL, it got crazy already, you can't expect Switch 2 owners to not react against negative whatever and not call it rage bait since that's all we have gotten since April 2nd direct from many places.

The OLED is going to win easily in term of blacks and contrast for obvious reasons, but the Switch 2 screen looks miles better than the Switch 1 LCD screen in every aspect. Probably i was lucky in both cases in the LCD panel lottery.

I saw this coming months ago…
And it's going to get worse… Looks like the Switch 2 is a real menace for some people 🤣.

Maybe the fact that the game runs at 720p and the oled screen is 720p vs 1080p of the switch 2 might contribute in some way also for it to look better?
also i want to understand the magnitude of the issue. if nintendo gave you the option between a 720p screen without that issue to a 1080p screen with it, what would you choose? can we do a poll here?

It's nothing to do with the resolution. It's the motion blurring because of the slow pixel response time that's the issue.

I played this game on the OLED and I'm pretty sure it has some motion blur by default, especially if you run across the screen while rolling with DK.
Okay, maybe? But... it's significantly worse on the Switch 2. I mean, - significantly worse. It's a pretty grueling experience on the new system compared to the OLED, or plugging into a regular IPS screen which almost certainly will have better pixel response than the Switch 2 screen.

I tested tropical freeze. Surprising to no one, Switch OLED looked better. UI system menus are cleaner in motion as well. I think tomorrow, I will try Mario U as that has a higher resolution patch. Should take out any scaling issues that may be occurring on TF since it has not been patched. But the is definitely at least some motion blur on the SW2 panel, though not surprised seeing its an LCD panel was bound to be more blurry than the SW OLED in motion. I havent seen anything thats a deal beaker, but compared to the SW OLED, it is a little disappointing but not surprising.

The screen is the only thing they have to shit on the console… Let's them to have some fun 🤣🤣 Is going to be hard for them the next few years.

The screen, continued issues with stick drift, weak launch titles, weak CPU, $80 games, no VRR in docked, and download codes on a game card are the only things to shit on… Let them have some fun.

The screen, continued issues with stick drift (False), weak launch titles (For you), weak CPU (Is a mobile hardware), $80 games ($50 with the bundle), no VRR (Going to be patched) in docked, and download codes on a game card (Same for every console or worse) are the only things to shit on… Let them have some fun.
😉

This is a couple weeks post launch with more YouTube videos of stick drift being posted all the time. Not false.

You can love the Switch 2 all you want but there isn't a hole in the sand deep enough for you to bury your head and ignore all of Nintendo's flaws. Every company has them and with Nintendo's hyper-fixation on hardware profitability, cheap components were always going to be near the top of the list.

Lol, you either have copium flatrates or copium must be dirt cheap where you live. But no amount of 😂🤣-emojis is going to make bathroom toy less shitty.

Its poor response times don't make it a bad screen overall. In fact, its color quality is much better than the Steam Deck LCD, and there's no bleeding. The rest of the specs are on par with a good IPS panel.

Of course, it could be better with local dimming for real HDR and faster response times, but not even high-end handheld PCs that cost almost twice as much do all that.
Being better than the steam deck lcd doesn't make it a good screen. The steam deck lcd had a notoriously bad screen. The switch 2 has noticeable ghosting which is an automatic no no for any screen. Furthermore, the screen itself is only fast enough for 30 fps. This just renders the whole 60/120fps as useless on the device.

The colors are not great either. The white point is off, no color space clamping for switch 1 games, it just looks overly saturated. If you like that, more power to you. However it's measurably bad not only in response time but, color accuracy, contrast, ability to display hdr properly, etc. The gamma tracking is off, it's not hdr at all. The only area it's on par with a good ips panel is in contrast ratio however, ips panels have terrible contrast ratios.

It's a bad screen period. Especially paying $700 cad(Mario kart bundle) for a screen this bad is borderline a scam when the steam deck Oled is cheaper….

but nintendo has a history of panel lotteries with their handhelds. Notorious with the 3ds and as recently as the switch lite. Its dumb to discount the possibility. My s2 display is solid and I primarily game on a 180hz ips with 1ms gtg. Have also owned a VA panel which had actual noticeable ghosting so I know what to look for.
