I really think HDR 120Hz with VRR played a big role in this and they opted for a weird choice at the end to keep the costs low

Yeah, would be very interesting to see more recent/newer data on this though. Maybe it shifted over time (?).

I think the Switch had only accumulated around 20M sales by that point, and now it's closing in on 160M, so who knows.

With Switch 2 the difference between docked/undocked is bigger though, so maybe more people will play exclusively docked this time around if only to get those upscaled 4K visuals.

Og. psp was averaging in that 35ms range(with 3k/go improving over it by a factor of 3x).

I had an OG PSP, and I can say quite confidently that the Switch 2 screen is much, much better than the PSP's.



Watch the black windows in this video as the screen moves left and right. It did that everywhere with dark colors-- playing Ridge Racer made me want to vomit.

Can someone who is more knowledgeable on these things let me know what the point of a 120hz capable display is when the display is so slow. 120hz - each frame is just over 8ms. The display is 30 odd ms of slowness.

To be fair many aren't getting it or it's not as extreme.
I think that different variants could be in the wild.
They have 3 different sku's in NA alone.(That I'm aware of)
MKW bundle with sticker on box, MKW bundle with logo design on the box and regular sku.
China and Vietnam have manufacturing plants I think.

I was thinking the same. Would suck if some folks just got unlucky with it. I don't have any sidescrollers to test with, but those type of games are not my thing either way. If there are variants then I'd like to know which I have. It may come back up at some point.

16ms is what DF deducted which is 3x slower than steam deck and OG Switch

I just downloaded the Mario vs DK and Metroid Dread demos. I don't see any issues at all. Going to download Octopath Traveler 2 on my Legion Go and compare with the Switch 2 demo version.

Edit: Octopath Traveler 2 isn't updated and is a blurry mess. Legion Go is far better. No point in comparing.

• Supports up to 120 Hz
• The only Switch 2 that supports "VRR"
  (VRR cannot be used in docked mode)
• High panel uniformity
• Wide color gamut (DCI-P3: 99%)
• Completely flicker-free (DC dimming)

The Steam Deck's screen doesn't support full HD or VRR. So those would seem to be relevant advantages.

I will only play docked, but for those of us who grew up with og game gear and game boy is this really a big deal or are the geeks making a mountain out of a molehill?

The screen is surprisingly bad. Monitors unboxed tested it and called it the worst lcd they've ever tested. It's slower than the switch 1 screen. It's not hdr, contrast is exactly the same as the old switch 1 screen.

It has better dci p3 coverage but other than that, it's not really an improvement from a technical perspective. It's more vibrant than switch 1 screen but, that's due to the aforementioned p3 coverage.

Frankly the longer we have hands on with this thing, the more corners we find that Nintendo cut. It's starting to make sense why they didn't send it out for reviews. My initial impressions from using it as a strictly handheld devices is that it's a complete downgrade from the steam deck Oled.

From ergonomics, to general graphics, to controls, to battery life, it's worse compared to what I remember. To confirm these suspicions, I ordered a new steam deck Oled today. I can't wait to test directly to see if I'm remembering correctly. One thing I know for sure is that the controls and screen of the switch 2 is rubbish.

Gonna be really interesting in the future to see if you will be able to change the overdrive on a hacked switch 2 at the cost of battery life which wouldn't be needed had they not gone with a 10nm. Likely if you knock the 10nm the rest of the dominoes fall.

Yeah there's gonna be a lower nm Switch 2 in the future that fixes all the warts on this one...

It would not have made me wait for it had I known though, maybe if it was a handheld only system.

Then again I wouldn't have been able to know for sure that I would have won the panel lottery, if there is one. If people are really seeing screens as bad as 20 years ago that's a bridge too far for me but I'm having some trouble believing it really is that bad in real life, but only because I have one. If I didn't I would be scared to death with FUD to get one right now.

Right but the ghosting issue is so minor. A patch is needed for these games to look as good (or potentially better) than they do on the Switch Oled. For example a game like Pikmin 4 or Metroid Prime Remastered looks better on the weaker Oled Switch because a) the colors/contrast and b) its not being stretched as much to fit the native 720p screen compared to Switch 2's 1080p screen.

But with a patch for 1080p/60 and if they manafe to get HDR working now we're likely going to look as good or better than the Switch Oled...granted, black levels and contrast will still be a bit better there. There's huge room for improvement on switch 2...

I don't know if 60 frames helps to improve the perception of ghosting (or make it worse?) but its not bothering me as much as the stretching of the image and color depth deficit between sw1 oled and sw2.

But games like Mario Odyssey and Echoes of Wisdom that have been patched look really darn good on Sw2

A lot of people will see it, some may not know any better or are in love with the games and game updates (fair), but with a rather significant price bump and a nearly useless tentpole feature (HDR in portable mode… 400 nits peak and no dimming zones) it is what it is , not sure why for Nintendo the standard needs to be that much lower…

In not a single spec / actual result the screen should be worse than the 8 years old OG Switch 1.

While I think some of the complaints are a little overexaggerated ......what a god damn shame Nintendo couldn't have just given people a better display. For fucks sake so many people would've happily paid another $100 for Oled which would've solved EVERY single issue found in the Switch 2's screen- HDR? would've popped on Oled even at a low peak brightness. Battery life? Check. Ghosting? Better believe it. Color accuracy and contrast? Yup

That's true and the only place i see people complaining about the price is this forum.
I do realise the people and parents i speak to is also anecdotal but nobody talks about the price.

What i was talking about is that nobody had issues at the events and they were even complimented about the display while not being an oled still having great visuals.
Now the hardware is out and people can benchmark it seeing lower numbers than expected suddenly it's a problem.
I don't agree with that way of thinking, i also said i don't see/experience the issues people are having, call me an apologist but why should i pick up the pitchfork if i don't have any issues?

The problem was with the Youtubers who went to the preview events. They are undiscerning shills for the most part. The same people Nintendo wants going to their events and making videos and defending the screen issues right now.

This is a huge problem industry wide right now. The Hype men ...the people doing PR for Nintendo even if they don't know it because they just want to farm views on their channels.
