Ghost of Yotei | Review Thread

.

Her facial expression kills me.
"Why did I wake up today? Why am I here? What is the meaning of life?"
Meanwhile her facial expression is like: why do my skin shaders look so plastic and last Gen? Why dont i have any hair physics? Why are the devs who made me so lazy?

I think all these hyper critical gfx whores are underestimating the fact that this game is being released in a finished state. It looks, sounds and runs really well, and has no annoying performance bugs.

I'm actually getting bored of hearing about shitty performance bugs, like with the recent Borderlands 4.

I mostly agree, better their engine than UE5 (<5.6). But apart for bigger draw distances this looks like PS4 game. RT doesn't count IMO because it's only at 30fps.

They just really should ditch their engine and use Decima and they won't have problems with bugs or performance with much better tools: nanite like rocks, realistic lighting, great upscaling on base PS5, much varied vegetation, as good or better clouds simulation and so on.

As my friend likes to reiterate to me, investing time and resources into an engine or coding language to learn its quirks is a huge investment. To shit can that investment would be setting the studio back to square one and having to re-learn a new graphics engine and all its gimmicks to achieve the desired outcome. Most companies just do not have that amount of labor capital to change up an entire working environment.

Of course but they had to think that 5 years ago before starting their PS5 project. And this is exactly what Kojima studio did in less time and with a smaller team. Similar thing with E33 studio.

Their Infamous games were pushing graphics on both PS3 and PS4. This is clearly not the case on PS5 here. Still using their old TAA they were using on PS4 is shocking IMO. Their engine clearly barely evolved except more assets loaded thanks to the SSD.

SP just got complacent.

Graphically it doesn't look too good apart from doing those vast landscapes camera angles

Gameplay wise, from all the videos i seen, brain dead AI exists only for your MC to do her dancey attacks to look cool

I think we are in a AAA budget drought , so the media are over scoring this game

Ok… 30 FPS like the original game on launch PS4 (yet higher res than that)?!? What kind of logic is this?
PS4 game was 1080p 30fps no RT
PS5 game is 1080p 60fps no RT

Is that perspective better for you? Seriously nobody cares about 30fps anymore. There is no point of 30fps with so many different good upscaling solutions.

So they only got 2x upgrade from 5x more powerful console. WOW.

Usually "PS4 looking" (like GOW) games get ~1440p resolution on base PS5, here they had to drop all the way down to 1080p and game still looks underwhelming...

Early trailers had folks believing there was no graphical bump, turns out the game was a massive jump graphically and technically from GoT. This is why I like to wait and not jump to conclusions too quick from early trailers of games.

Edit: Just read through the thread and the salt is massive. Some people are extremely upset that the game reviewed well and is a stunner. The sales thread for this game will be a salt mine :messenger_tears_of_joy:
First trailers didn't even have reflections in a lot of the water, and very flat textures everywhere.

Sony really needs to get better at promoting games.

Even Saros which I'm excited for now didn't have a good showing this go around.

Says you mate :P. Even there you have double the framerate and all the other technical improvements John highlights in the video and more is coming out (small things like grass being interactive, you can cut it with your blade now, and bigger ones like much increased draw distance, particle effects, etc…).

A lot of people could enjoy the original at 30 FPS and they can do it now too. On top of it, if they can afford a Pro they can enjoy RT at 60 FPS too (with a good PSSR implementation to boot too).

😂, "only" 2x the framerate and then more. The game is not just improving the framerate, but this debate is futile, we can all see the game is not underwhelming :).

Zero Dawn to Forbidden West jump was much higher and it was done as cross gen game. And Zero Dawn was among the best looking PS4 games, Tsushima already was mid looking compared to Horizon or RDR2 (art style was helping it A LOT). Sucker Punch needs to adapt Decima - their engine is too ancient (even with RTGI) and uses a lot of power for average results.
Even mid looking UE5 game like SHf looks better than this...

I'm glad you look forward to the game, but I'm still not paying for it. There are very few games that are worth the increased price.

I understand your sentiment. It sucks when most of the discourse today is around controversies. But that is only true for games that has it. This game has a vocal, self-proclaimed member of antifa voicing the main character. It's fair to discuss and criticies the game for that. I'm honestly tiered of the overly inclusive and boring interactions of Sony's recent output. But this game in particular is something I'm skipping because I'd rather have played as a male protagnoist. The fantasy of playing as a female ronin in a historical setting is not making my wallet itch, especially not after Spider-Man 2 (a Sony game I was really looking forward to).

If you're only seeing negativity here it's probably based on your game preferences. I've yet to see people dogpile Ninja Gaiden 4 or Crimson Desert.
Thank you for sanity in a pretty fair response.

I agree with with last paragraph but I would go further. Where are the OT threads for those games? Old GAF would have them bumping on the top page for months. Now they're drowned in a sea of BS…

I personally think you are unnecessarily putting down GoY's art style and technology jump and in the era of difficult to sustain AAA bets, I am not unhappy we can enjoy GoY developed with a reasonable budget instead of betting the entire studio on each game they make. It gives the possibility of more content and sequels being realised instead of "not my problem, I need my AAAAA games for $50 max" attitudes which some have.

Despite 30 FPS on the non Pro PS5, I think the RT mode for GoY on the base console looks really good and makes the jump for the overall package impressive. Videos we can all watch attest to that (and people can compare that with the base PS4 version of the game).

I'm all for AA budget games but they can't be 70$ at the same time.

I will buy disc version of GoY, complete it and sell it for ~75% of what I paid for it. But if I was forced to buy it for 100% of the price on PS Store (with no ability to sell) I wouldn't even touch it - and I bought Claire Obscur like that (even after completing it on PC first)

I am all for questioning the value of certain games, but Ghost of Yotei should not be one of them. There is 50-60hrs of content, S tier art style, and top notch motion capture performances. Not to mention, there is a free update coming next year of their fantastic multiplayer

RT does count because I'll be playing at 60fps on the Pro. Also bear in mind that GOT on PS4 ran at 30fps with no RT. GOY generally looks a lot better than GOT regardless of PS5 or Pro version, hence the DF opinion - dynamic weather, epic draw distance, more stuff on screen at a higher fidelity and running at twice the frame rate.

I agree that we're seeing more threads about the latest controversy over hype threads for upcoming games. But that is just par for the course of the US climate right now. Influencers are getting killed on one side, and response is naturally to fight back. I also believe it has a lot to do with the current economy. Times are rough and I honestly feel like a lot of the games we are seeing now are asking more for less. Especially true for games developed by large studios on the West Coast.

I felt very much like you did during the times when DLC started gaining prominence over expansions. But the people complaining had it right. It led to microtransactions, loot boxes and online passes. The response to that at the time was that costs had to be recouperated somehow. But they still increased the prices and kept filling the games with more predatory business models. Some games are shut down less than a year after release.

The Insomniac leak was probably the last drop for me. Insane budgets and massive staff working on Spider-Man 2 that turned out a product worse than what came before. Developers cry when playtime and other dumb stuff are cut from their workplace. It's hard to defend bad and overly political games when the developers are seemingly acting as kindergartens for adults. But much like you I hope we'll get back to a more positive discourse on here. But in my minds that is the games, not our community. At least right now.

A game that has achieved a score of 87 with more than 100 reviews (some of the most critical ones being highly debatable...) and with technical aspects praised by the guys at Digital Foundry, as well as by the vast majority of analysts, it honestly deserves more respect from you, who surely haven't played it, are judging it based on screenshots and YouTube videos, and I imagine don't have any relevant position in the world of video games, beyond commenting on forums.

Why would I care about reviewers that want to have good relationships with publishers? Reviews of this game game can be fair, inflated or even below what they should be. We don't know that because non of us played this game.

But I can judge the game based on available media so far, when I will play it on my Pro maybe my opinion will change.

And John's videos about big exclusives from Sony/MS/Nintendo are almost always positive, I never paid much attention to them vs. more critical vs. videos (or PC videos).

I had ~50h of great gameplay, amazing music and S tier cutscenes and story from Claire Obscur for 50$.

Okay, you've already discredited more than 100 analysts from trade magazines and independent technical analysts who have tested and completed the game. Now you need to present your credentials so we can compare them with international criticism. What technical experience do you have? Do you have the game? Do you work in the industry?

Many reviewers are dumb fucks who can't even play the games, everything is too hard or too CIS white male to them. And when game is technical mess like Elden Ring (or Monster Hunter) they won't even talk about it in reviews: "10 out of 10, perfect game!" What credentials they have?

Jurnos are mostly about politics these days.

Maybe you're just trying too hard to shit on this game.

Eh, I played ER and the 'hate' that even the PS5 version gets is vastly overrated.

well, you gotta admit, it's easier doing that than it is arranging for some genuinely deserving games, eh?...

I really don't know... I'm really in the mood for a new Sony studios game. But I made the mistake of buying AC Shadows at Release. And that was the most boring shit I've played in the last few years. I struggled through it because it was expensive.

And now again a setting in feudal Japan?! With a similar story?! And a main character I don't like?!

Why can't it be Uncharted 5?! Or The last of us part 3?! Or Horizon 3 at least?! 😩

And I'll say it again loud and clear: Give me back my male main characters Sony! There have been fucking enough games now in which you play as a woman!

looks better in every single way......how TF do some of yall say this is PS3 quality....

Small improvements/diminishing returns blablabla, remember one is a PS4 game and the other a PS5 game, but the differences are not generational at all. That being said, the grass getting cut looks awesome. I dont think I've seen that in a game yet? Not even in AC Shadows, I mean sure you can cut a lot of stuff, but the ground grasses? Looks cool. Certainly not something Id buy day one, but will wait for PC version cheap.
