Ghost of Yōtei vs Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Ultimate Graphics Showdown

Of the all stupid takes I read about this game, this is by far take the crown.

What next? Why should people care about the detail of a virtual weapon in videogame? Why that virtual tree need to look as beautiful as the real tree?

A more apt comparison would be the belief that all weapons have to look shiny and perfect and new and all trees have to look like beautiful exotic palm trees.

We aren't talking about detail or texture quality or lighting. We're talking about artistic intent. I will never understand why so many people think the protagonist of their game has to look like a supermodel. There's a time and a place for that, for sure, but I want the character to make sense for the setting/story/vibe of the game.

These stupid complaints would be like complaining that Marlon Brando was fat and had puffy jowels in The Godfather or Jim Carrey looked too homely and tired in Eternal Sunshine.

Ya'll sound like a bunch of children, to be honest.

The problem is people like yourself will never accept the most common point.

There are people that love cute protagonist (whatever male or female), there are people that don't care. Simple as that.

And the irony of calling people children is off the charts. In the same way you behave like a 2 years old whining about why everything needs to be attractive, there are 2 years old folks whining about why everything needs to be ugly.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' town is on another level; it's probably sitting at the peak of graphical rendering for gaming in the current generation.

YouTube screencap.

People calling the protagonist of Yotei a man, making low effort memes about how ugly she is, or straight up claiming they aren't going to play the game because they don't want to fuck the main character are acting like children.

Yeah, I stand by that 100%.

You don't stand for nothing dude. You are just the second kind of people who don't care if the protagonist is attractive or not, with is totally fine. The only thing you are proving is that memes over the internet about a fictional character bother you.

Shadows looks unquestionably much better but Yotei also has it's strengths.

I've already commented in other threads how distant landscapes are handled better in Yotei (I really don't like how the far away trees look in Shadows). The level of detail is just so much more convincing from afar.

The sky simulation in Yotei is also fantastic. I remember reading about how GT7 simulated atmospheric scattering (page 110) and it looks like Yotei is doing something similar with its sky. It makes the sped up day/night cycle footage look stunning. There is so much fucking fog in Shadows that I can't even tell if Ubisoft attempted something similar. Seriously, the game seems permanently mired in a coating of mist while Yotei confidently pulls off clear weather conditions.

This is also a matter of taste but I also vastly prefer the color LUT used in Yotei - most of the time. Sometimes it ends up veering off to look really garish and cartoony but the landscape shots i've seen of the green fields with blue skies look great.

Does this look this good on base PS5? Hearing performance mode is 1080 is a tad disappointing

Performance mode is 1920x1080, indeed 1080p60.

For me is disappointing to release a game so late to the party with that low resolution, will not look good at my 55 inch 4k TV thats for sure, if there is something in the game that is really pushing hard the system, but most are art direction.

What do you mean "avoid"? When did they make it an habit to compare the visuals of games just because they have similar settings?

Comparison with Tsushima was logical, DF made plenty of videos comparing games to previous entries. There are just few scenes like that in DF video.

NXG shows probably the biggest benefit I have seen so far from RTGI:

It also confirms viveks86 viveks86 suspicion that RTGI indeed works on NPCs:

But to be honest I don't see much differences here.

Very good point. They sacrificied their best single player teams (like Bluepoint) to invest billions in GAAS. They spent 400M on Concord while asking SP to keep the same engine / similar budget to make their sequel.
Fire Herman. Killed the entire identity of Sony in one generation. PS exclusives used to set standards for cutting edge graphics and rich storytelling. They are still good at storytelling, but now he's saying we will get 1-2 of those a year. Last year we didnt even get one.

Get this loser the fuck outta here.

Yay!

With a single bounce, where the primary source is direct sunlight, there is only so much that RTGI will do outdoors. I fully expect night/lowlight scenes to have greater impact. The only good footage there is so far is gamersyde. Even that has compression artifacts, but it certainly shows secondary light sources bouncing off walls etc. But I have no idea what it looks like with just the baked lighting system.

Will need to spend some time with that NXGamer video. Also, I can see all these items in the patch notes that are going to affect the look of the game outdoors and whether RTGI does anything as a reaction to them. So they may have to do another followup review. Lol.

  • Multiple improvements to environmental rendering performance.
  • Fixed issues affecting Ray Tracing Mode lighting consistency and performance.
  • Improved onsen environmental assets, layout, set dressing and world interaction to provide more unique experiences for each onsen.
  • Improving appearance and performance of some flower types.
  • Improved the look of erosion and details in mountain ranges seen across the world.
  • Improved various textures in caves to bring up level of detail and eliminate seams and some artifacting.
  • Updated lower levels of detail on various tree assets around the world to prevent visual popping when the player is navigating around locations.
  • Updated deep snow blending to better conceal characters and also improve the look of snow on other assets.
  • Improvements and optimization across many assets throughout the game to improve performance.
  • Improved textures and assets within various caves and dens across the game for general quality polish.
  • Tweaked assets across the entire game to fix issues with objects floating above the ground.

This is almost Cyberpunk with path tracing levels of difference.

And people say ray tracing is a waste of time...
Come On Please GIF

I agree that RTGI makes wonder for a game, but "almost the same level of Cyberpunk PT" reaching much dont you think ?

SONY your MC looks so sloppy and ugly compared to AC Shadows MC. AC Shadows MC ain't even that great but just like 1000x better than the other girl.

Also the environments in Yotei still look bad, like, they look like Mario. Simplified. Like they forgot to add shadows or something. I dunno how to describe it.

Seriously what is up with Yotei looking like shit in the medium sized outdoor areas.

It isn't even me. I can tell. They DO look off. Perhaps it is art style?

I think AC Shadows is a great looking game, but on Pro, it only looks at its best at 30fps, which is a bit shit tbh. It seems GOY on Pro looks as good as the quality mode on base PS5 but at 60fps. This is a dealbreaker for me as a Pro owner.

I also agree with others about AC Shadows having a copy and paste feeling to it, especially with the castle areas. You've seen one castle you've pretty much seem them all. It also has lots of towns, but there's not much to do in them. You try to explore forests and get stuck in a lot of areas, and there's nothing there.

I feel like visually, GOY has had more thought put into the landscapes to make you feel like you want to explore them, whereas in AC Shadows, exploration can be a chore, and not very worthwhile, other than to find one of those annoying caves, or platform sections to find loot.

Yes it has seasons, but they change too quickly to be meaningful and tbh, by the time you've spent 100 hours in the game, your character should have aged by about 20 years. Personally, I prefer a game to have different biomes.

It seems the AC Shadows devs have flattered to deceive, because it's a pretty soulless game if you discard the visuals.

Which one plays better?
I'm sure both of them are stock average. Filler for genre aficionados. No danger of goty from either franchise, ever, so they have that going for them at least. More of the same, but now with this baddie along for the ride:

Water and rock textures/details are the weakest part of Yotei and look a couple of generations behind Shadows.
tbh, Ubisoft already had great looking water in Assasins Creed Origin... Based on the pictures the water in Origin would already be able to beat yotei...

The biggest difference between Yotei and Shadows is definitely the lighting, where Yotei lighting is really flat in comparison to Shadows. Combined with low level of texture details and assets, it gave an early PS4-era graphics look.
According to DF there is a raytracing mode in Yotei. Was this used?

But then, in the videos I watched Yotei looked great. I doubt I would miss anything...

Near 80% of the things are better on assasins creed shadows vs 20 % of details in ghost of yotei looks better.

Conclusion: assasins creed looks better (minus the horse)

Yep, patch could be interesting. They also should add more display modes (unlocked, 40fps) - that is common in Sony games.

I think ac Shadows have all the features of quality mode (including RT reflections) in 40fps mode on pro.

40fps mode with RT in Yotei would be nice for base PS5 owners.
