[IGN] This Xbox Generation Will Be Remembered for One Thing: Greed

Bungie left MS when they were at their peak.

For better and worse
Bungie was at their peak too

Such a crock of shit. I ate the last three increases. I dealt with the constant Rewards constrictions. This will be it. At least from a month to month respect. I used to just let that auto refill if I didn't get the points I needed through rewards. I guess if some new good stuff drops I'll toss them some coins if I don't earn enough reward points. I prefer to play on Xbox, but perhaps it is time to enjoy the PS5 more and definitely use my PC more.

Is GAF's XBOX Defense Force still kicking? No? M$ has always been M$, their contributions to this industry are virtually zero, their 3 main IPs milked to eternity don't hold a candle to what Nintendo, PlayStation and even what SEGA used to put out in their heyday as one of the main players (and still do as a publisher). See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya 👋

They really fooled some people in to thinking they were some charitable humanitarian organisation huh?

How impressionable do you need to be?
They saw that EA was getting bailed out of their debt and switched to private and had no other choice but to take the mask completely off.

The "race to the bottom" wasn't going to work any longer.

Was part of ultimate, my response to the price hike is dropping down to essential, 9.99 a month will be a welcome, there's a lot to ultimate but my impression of game pass is it being a higher level ps plus.

All they did was increase the Ultimate tier price, and even then, they did add additional benefits (regardless of whether you care about them).

The other two tiers are not price-adjusted at all.

This "controversy" seems like the usual clickbait cycle and redditard hemming and hawing. Yeah, no shit, MS is not a charity.

It's a shame, but honestly, I feel like the big 3 are slipping in general this generation. Microsoft, Sony, AND Nintendo. Some for very different reasons, some for pretty similar reasons. It's just unfortunate. I feel like the only thing that's stayed the same is PC, and I'm thankful for that.

The greed part will be a foot note. This Xbox generation will be remembered for giving up completely. PS5 for their GAAStastrophe. Nintendo for bebopin' and scattin' all over.

Feels like Xbox is fishing for go-away heat so it's not a total PR nightmare when they drop out for good. Total 4D chess move.

You can scratch Xbox from the thread title, frankly. This generation is when the party ended. Despite screaming about their record revenue and profits from the mountain tops, all while committing record layoffs I might add, these companies have decided enough is enough - we don't need to provide anything resembling value anymore. You want what we have: fuck you - pay.

We sat at USD$60 a game for about a decade. Then, with this gen, it jumped to USD$70. Five years later we're at USD$80, and USD$90 is already being floated. Games that are half finished, run like shit, laden with MTX, and in a lot of cases, don't look all that different from last gen games. Why? Fuck you - pay.
Hardware has only gotten more expensive this generation. In fact, this is the first gen where the hardware is more expensive now than when it launched. Why? Fuck you - pay.
Services have only continued to climb in price, despite offering literally nothing for the extra money. And these increases aren't a dollar here or there; today Xbox jumped it's central Game Pass tier by 50%. Why? Fuck you - pay.

Record revenue isn't enough.
Record profits aren't enough.
Record MAUs aren't enough.

The industry is going to crash itself because they're dead set on pricing customers out of their hardware, out of their games, and out of their services.

Aand not just with consoles. Windows 11 is the biggest pos OS I've used since original Windows ME. I have a daily log of issues on my work or personal computer where something broke for no reason and fixes itself for no reason. Today, I made a folder on my desktop and I couldn't see it. I had to open file explorer and load my desktop to view it. Yesterday, snip wouldn't work. It wouldn't let me actually use the snip feature to copy the image over. Every single day.
I might be the only one who likes windows 11 for work. The added split functionality has honestly been very helpful for my work. Also, helps that I have not been facing similar issues as you and the issues I do face have been there since windows 10.

gotta disagree. greed has been an essential component of microsoft, & sony, & nintendo, from day 1. they're businesses. this xbox generation will be remembered for the same thing as the previous xbox generation: grave miscalculation. in both cases, they bet the entire generation on a single 'revolutionary/innovative' concept: last gen it was 'always online, tv integrated kinect box'. this gen, it was 'day 1 game pass'. what's weird is that, when they previously simply competed on equal terms, they did quite well...

IGN Senior Executive Editor and Unlocked podcast host Ryan McCaffrey reacts to Microsoft's recent price increases on consoles, software, and Xbox Game Pass and how they fly in the face of the player-first decisions that Xbox had continually made since Phil Spencer took over the Xbox business.

Strange.
In the past, Microsoft were often criticized for "devaluing" their games via cheap subscription. Now that they are finally starting to take care of properly conveying the "value" of their works, it doesn't seem right either? 🤭

If I hear "greed", I immediately think of Sony and Nintendo instead.

This is not exclusive to Xbox. This can also be observed at Nintendo and Playstation as well. This whole console generation is just one big clusterfuck.

Something isn't right at all, there's way too much coordination going on.

IGN is just another cocksleeve of video game publishers, their jobs are to represent some of the greediest assholes on the planet.

All this bullshit article tells me is publishers and studios hates Gamepass, no shit. I really hope AI just floods all these greedy fucks into irrelevancy where they belong. They know Microsoft is the clanker tip of the spear.

Models like Gamepass are the future, it takes into account AI, the accelerating devaluing effect it has on all current forms of gaming, this very loud very hamfisted fight is the last gasp of a whole entertainment industry finding itself in checkmate.

I wish we could know what the top people at Microsoft knows.

It's pretty rich to call it "greed".
They were offering access to games at unsustainable prices. The media cheered it on, alongside the 80+ billion dollar spending spree that was supposed to undercut and subsume the core games market alongside Gamepass. Xbox fanboys bragged about how much money they were saving.

Yeah, MS is greedy, but this is less an effect of that, and more the rubber meeting the road of financial reality.
Sadly, I feel your right. We've been seeing for years posts about how many have been dipping game pass and points making more or less an essential circle of getting the service for at times 10$ or less. Everyone crowed about how they were getting by pulling a fast one and wondering how the company was making profits and yet bitching when they weren't investing enough in first party titles.

It gotten to the point that someone up at MS said the party is over we're going to actually charge for this service what we feel
It's worth and cut off the scams to get it free or for like 10$. As ridiculously wealthy as Microsoft is as a company they weren't going to continue to let this keep going cause they were the cool uncle of the gaming world. They want to make as much money as possible, the same with both Nintendo and Sony. People tend to forget st times these are business that see us as numbers on a spreadsheet to their bottom line. Does it suck? Yeah, but in my opinion I feel the Ultimate service is worth the price. It's certainly not for everyone but then again that's why they along with Sony has multiple levels of services same as Nintendo.

They are certainly pulling the carrot stick further away with all day one titles now becoming other bear service to entice you but we tend to forget that Sony has benefits like that on their top service as well (cloud saves, classic games) and Nintendo with GameCube and SNES games. Again this is just the harsh reality of all businesses.

Every person who laid this future out in the ABK mega-thread is vindicated.

The people who denied reality are unsurprisingly still denying reality.

I feel the energy here is driven mostly by publishers wanting consumers to buy full price instead of having a middle man screwing with their profits. It's not subtle at all.

For a games company that supposedly is irrelevant and doesn't matter, Xbox sure shows up in a lot discussion these days.

I think butthurt guys like Pete Hines is behind a lot of the noise, there's a shitload of butthurt ex MS executives out there it seems, Mike Ybarra going full edgelord probably wasn't in the script either.

When Businesses take Piracy, regardless how you define it, seriously, no surprise. If it has it's own place in the industry, from publishers pov, then naturally it'll move the cost of everything else up. Nothing will change unless you can address piracy, otherwise, publishers will take advantage of it and raise the cost of everything else.

Sorry to break it to you Ryan (and everyone else dumb enough to drink that coolaid)

MS never stopped being MS. Not even for a second.

Every single company out there is in it to make money. No secret there, the difference between everyone else and a few companies like MS (and Nvidia), is that they have shown, time and time again, that they are willing to make that money at the expense of everyone else. Disturbingly, including their customers. They have always shown that they do not just want to do well, they need everyone else to fail... even if that means their customers suffer for it. Even if that means the very industry they are in suffers for it.

This has ALWAYS been MS, right back to the conception of Windows. We are just in an age of short-term memory, fish-brained dumb fucks that somehow lack the foresight to see it.

I've been saying this for years... that the single worst thing that can happen to gaming is that MS gets its way. You all look at what they are doing, even when not getting their way...

Microsoft is definitely dumb, but let's be real this entire generation for every platform could be remembered for this.

ALL of them are more expensive than they've been before, and offer less value for the money you're spending if you buy hardware or big games day one.

The only way around the increased cost is playing AA, indie or older games marked dow"n.
What is it with this shit with some posters?
The thread isn't about "the entire generation for every platform" it's about the xbox this generation.
Deflect, deflect, deflect.

How?

I find this is something else people do often... That "oh, everyone does this." thing.

Yes, every company wants to make money, but make no mistake... no one else (except Nvidia) goes about it the way MS does. No one else.

The things MS has done to get to where they are now (and I am only talking about gaming here, I am not that mean)... no other gaming platform has done it. The damage MS has done to the gaming industry as a whole, no other company, in the history of gaming, with all their respective fuck ups... ever did as much. And that didn't just start with them doubling the price fo a sub service that should never has existed to begin with if you ask me. That of itself was just as damaging.

As for Nintendo, I honestly can't even blame them. If their fanbase keeps letting them get away with it, then they will continue doing Nintendo shit.

I'm so ready for a SEGA comeback now!

Happy Big Lebowski GIF
Are you one of those people who go back to an ex, forgetting why they became an ex in the first place?

Xbox is not the only to blame
No no, this is all exclusively targeting Microsoft, it would be interesting to find out who Ryan McCaffrey, his editors, and Ziff Davis has been chatting to. I'm sure Microsoft is wondering the same.

Weaponising marketing directly against the corpos who can see everything is brave as fuck.

Yeah. "Everybody Too" is so tired. It's amazing how some people want the industry to burn, just because the Xbox platform is a disaster now.

It's all crashing down now.
I'm too dumb to think far enough to know if it's good or bad. Glad influencers are finally speaking the truth and don't try to spin it. Let's see if they do the usual we've heard your feedback backpedal.

Xbox is not the only to blame
Ok... so who else should we blame for Xbox's current demise?
Yeah. "Everybody Too" is so tired. It's amazing how some people want the industry to burn, just because the Xbox platform is a disaster now.
To them, Xbox is not doing bad, the industry has just failed, and everything is bad. At some point... before this new hike... some would even say MS was trying to save gaming.

Xbox as a console is dead. No exclusives, too expensive, no long-term support or vision.
I wouldn't even buy a digital game from them, who can guarantee that the Xbox Store will still be online in 2035?
Game Pass has no future either, because it will never come to Switch or PlayStation. And on PC, it doesn't stand a chance against Steam.
