I would love a good Western. Red Dead's pacing and focus are awful.

Ghost of Yotei is basically a western. Even the camera shots are VERY reminiscent of the imagery found in those movies. (There has always been similarities between Japanese style films and Westerns, but as GoT was more Japanese, GoY is more western in vibes).

We will see if their choice to use a female protagonist actually makes sense for the story. Of if its just a dude with a female VA and body type thus just being irritating. I have liked what I have played so far (even though some of the writing is juvenile).

This. Devs should realize that they don't just compete with today's games, but with 30 years of games that are all fighting for my time.

A 70$ mediocre modern game seems way less enticing than a 9/10 from 2002 that I have yet to play which I could get for like 5$.

Sure takes some balls to release another revenge story the same year KCD2 has been released. No way to beat that one.

I really enjoyed KCD2 but I honestly didn't think the story was all that special. That's the thing about a story in games though is that it's all very subjective. I liked the SM2 story but a lot of people hated it on here anyways. I thought the story in E33 was great but some people really hated the twist near the end.

If it can work for Sergio Leone it can work for Sucker Punch. Westerns can be about things other than revenge. Some of the best films in the genre are not focused on revenge.

I haven't felt the fatigue mainly because I don't think there have been enough games released, but if someone doesn't like the games then immediately after the latest game was released seems like the perfect time to say something. Just opinions.

There is no doubt that the structure of many of the big Sony games are similar (Ghost, Horizon, Spider-Man, are all checklist open worlds with different flavors of core gameplay. But I think the accusations of sameness are a little overblown.

It's easy to take a quick glance at the portfolio, see the 3rd-person camera perspective and the beautiful environments, and think, "Okay I see a pattern here", but many of these games are very different from each other.

God of War/TLoU/Death Stranding are VERY different from a gameplay perspective, despite them all being "sad-dad simulators". It's like saying Metroid Prime and Doom are similar because they are both in 1st person...or Gone Home...which is ridiculous.

In terms of the narrative themes - I see what the author is going for here but again I think the argument falls a little flat. TLoU2 is a revenge tale for Ellie's half, but after playing as Abby it becomes more about protecting Lev (and mirrors the first game, which was not about revenge). DS2 is about revenge if you have zero media literacy and only take it as it's basest level.

Also shoutout to Returnal and Astro for having the most refreshing gameplay in the entire first party.

100% agree with you, but I'm also of the opinion that more lighter non Hollywood script level games on the order of AstroBot would be welcome to break up the big setpiece games. It feels like we're not getting much of that outside Nintendo as usual. Would be nice to see 1st parties go back to their roots.

Really just more 15-20 hour games in general that I can actually finish in a reasonable time would be welcome. Being a working adult sucks.

If you think about it...the story beats in Astrobot aren't that different: Bad guy does something to someone (either the main character or someone he knows), he goes through multiple levels saving all of them and then right at the end there's a boss fight and bad guy is defeated.

TLOU2: Abby does something to someone Ellie cares about, Ellie goes through the entire game to find said person and a boss fight happens.

Crash Bandicoot: Cortex kidnaps Crash's sister, crash goes thought the entire game looking for him and defeats him in the end.

That's literally 90% of all videogames like i wrote in my previous post (3rd post here somehow lol). You can apply this to many RPGs, action games, hell even first person shooters in some way. I bet you that if TLOU2, SM2 and Ghost of Yotai weren't from the same publisher you wouldn't see an article saying "i'm tired of most games telling the same story".

Saying all their games "tell the same story" is a massive exaggeration, but I do think it's definitely true that a lot of Sony games have explored a similar style and themes, specially after the success of TLOU. Lots of darker stories, lots of focus on grief and/or revenge, lots of serious and stoic characters, etc. It definitely gets a big repetitive over time.

Also I haven't played Yotei but the premise of the story is indeed insanely generic. Almost the same as AC Shadows and very similar to Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix, it's like the one plot western writers seem to be able to come up with to tell a story in historical japan lol.

I was bored like 4 years ago.

It's really not just the stories, but the general presentation, gameplay hooks, tropes and themes, difficulty level. It's a very homogenous operation and has been for some time.

Personally, I don't see it changing at all. Seems to me like a lot of mainstream fans have never been more conservative and unadventurous and these games are for the mainest of the mainstream. They don't like new things, new IP, new and unfamiliar gameplay.

Don't blame the fans that have E33 and Silksong as best games of the year.

What you describe is the same that is happening in Hollywood. Movies are made with a template, so are videogames. This is the logical outcome of having mediocre creators and marketing suits calling the shots. Hire good writers and visionary directors and things will change, but that takes a 180 turn.

What is so wrong with the idea of getting a 30-man incubator group going at every first party studio to prototype new ideas? This would be such an easy long-term win for first party. Give them the resources of first party and let them come up with new stuff that can trickle up to the big games.

People's first defense of all the Sony remasters is "Well we have to give the junior devs something to do"...well let them work on new ideas! These are probably kids right out of school who are very idealistic and have a ton of energy. Let them invent the future.

If we have to bring up silly things we don't like i can bring down any plot from any game ever made.

You know i'm not gonna defend sony going woke too much but this was never the point.

I never felt like i was playing the same plot of ragnarock while i was playing days gone, and viceversa.
