[Rumor] New Symbols Hint at Crossbuy between PlayStation and PC

  • Minecraft Earth
  • Bleeding Edge
  • Forza Street
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator
  • Halo Infinite
And these were announced
  • Age of Empires IV
  • Forza Motorsport
So Jimbo went all in on GaaS not because Fortnite or Warzone, He did it because...Forza Street(a mobile game) and Bleeding Edge?

My question was:
What was Xbox big GaaS in 2019-2021 that made Jim Ryan approve 20 something GaaS ?

That could be just a new indicator for the feature, in 3rd party games too. I dunno, really.

And I'm sure cross-buy is just for portable PS, just like low-powered mode.

But the portable is nowhere near being available yet (in fact, we don't even know whether or not it's even real yet, at this stage it's all guess work based on the low power mode stuff) and in the same update they pushed the new PS5/PC icon, so it makes it likely that the two would be linked.

I don't believe this. Not because I don't want it to happen, but because I can't imagine Sony doing something that could benefit consumers.

If they force you to use a storefront they create on PC then it benefits them.

Question. How do we know these are connected? It looks like it could be PS5/PC (which they already do) and Cross buy separately for the PS5/PS6/rumored handheld. Do we know cross buy is for PC? It could be but I wonder if we are getting ahead of ourselves.

In all likely hood it is more for PS6 and the PS6 Handheld

Sony just launchedf PS5-less cloud streaming that is avaliable on PS so it could easily be about that.

But GAF fonna GAF.

Different icons.

I only would see this if there's a proper Playstation launcher.

If not, they are destroying double dippers sales, have to connect PSN with Steam etc

I mean, if a game is sold on PSN would Steam give it for free? The same on Steam and PSN giving it fir free? They would have to have the sales data interconnected, and that's not happening.

Only way is if Sony launches it's own PSN launcher on PC, separate from Steam or integrated but independent.

I will be a little disappointed because I have had to make the choice between PC/PS5 before but I believe you're right. I would hope most (all) titles between the PS6/PS6 handheld will be cross buy.
I would imagine it's mandated for PS6 games, like Series S was. It'll be the older ones that studios have to get incentivized to go back and do.

Even if Sony mandated any new games must have a PC version, and that it's included with the PS version (which itself is insane), how can they retroactively 1) make all past titles work on PC, and 2) make it legal? They will need a new agreement and maybe even new version for EVERY SINGLE OLD GAME for this to happen. Would it be great, of course but it seems like an insurmountable nightmare.
Sony wouldn't mandate that all, every single old PS PSN games must be on PC PSN. Can't do that due to licensing issues, specially with companies who bankrupted or movies/sports teams/cars/etc licenses that expired etc. That's something that would be needed to be done with thousands of companies of games already released in PSN, and in many cases even if 3rd party devs/publishers have the rights to re-release old games won't want to spend any effort in some old ones because wouldn't be profitable for them, so won't do it.

What Sony could do would be to put there all the Sony games released in Steam until now as PS PSN+PC PSN crossbuy games (plus all the future Sony ones, very likely releasing all of them day one 1 in PC PSN but not in Steam/Epic Store) and mandate to the 3rd parties that any game they would want to release going forward in PS4 PSN, PS5 PSN, PS6 PSN or PC PSN must be released as crossbuy in both PS and PC PSN.

Meaning, devs/publishers would need to agree title by title to release future titles (and old ones if they want to do so) in PC PSN and in all cases would be as crossbuy. Devs/publishers who want to release on PS consoles going forward could be forced by Sony to release their games on PC PSN too as well and viceversa: any 3rd party who would want to release a game in the Sony PC store would be forced to release it in PS consoles as crossbuy.

The concept would be 'a single PSN to rule them all': buy a game and play it in (home or portable) PS console or (desktop, laptop or handheld) PC, having the same shared trophies, friendlist, crossbuy, crossplay, PSN features like cloud gaming, etc.

This only would apply here, not to Steam. Meaning, as PC player if you buy a PC game in Sony's store you'd get its PS version for free, while in Steam it wouldn't be the case.

I can already see it.

They launch their own thing, pull all games from Steam like EA did and then come back to Steam 10 years later, because no one on PC cared.

Best case scenario: they simply add the game to your Steam or PS library if you have linked your accounts. I could see the cross buy version be more expensive as well.

I think it would be more that games launch on steam 12 months or so after the ps store release.

That's fine with me. I'd be one of the peeps buying from the Sony store to run on my playstation devices.

My PlayStation's will still be purchased and used in spare rooms etc then I can enjoy their games on my pc as well, hopefully day one.

They would actually gain more purchases from someone like myself, I think, someone who has used Xbox play anywhere for most games. Especially the Sega games. Atlus etc.

Sony already puts their games on PC though. And doing so by putting their games into other ecosystem they have zero control over.

A PC storefront with Cloud integration only strengthens Sony's ecosystem.

Hardware has a limit, when a Cloud only user buys games from Sony PC store and streams them, they're joining Playstation ecosystem. Once they build enough of a library, and they decide to buy hardware in the future, a PlayStation Console becomes no brainer for them. Same goes for xCloud users buying Xbox hardware.

These are extensions of their ecosystem where Sony gets 100% of the revenues. Putting games onto Steam isn't helping their ecosystem at all.

I agree with you, IF Sony builds their own PC Storefront and sells their 1st party games there for 10% less than what they are on Steam. But they can't do Day One games on PC for all their titles. That's just retarded.

I still have a PS5, but won't ever purchase anything stuck on that system since I'll be moving to PC. No reason to. If they make it crossbuy, I'd likely get Intergalactic and the Barlog game day 1. I would rather give money to Sony for a game they make then give 30% of it to Valve for literally no reason. At least they make games.

But if more people buy their games, if more people buy their subscriptions, etc...they would make more money...if it's not on steam. I just think that a PS launcher will happen sooner or later. And the incentive will be using your PS Plus subscription and cross-buying games between PS and PC. Maybe day one for PC will be on their launcher only and steam will keep getting the games years later, who knows.
Something along those lines.

The problem is, Sony can't beat Steam on PC. It's literally impossible. It's a non-winnable fight. They are 15 years behind, with no way to catch up at all. Plus Valve is a privately held company and that has its advantages over Sony being publicly owned.

It's not about beating Valve. It's about retaining the digital library lock in. They have 100 million customers they can lock in and keep it that way. Xbox wants to try and keep 30 million locked in. It's still worth something.

As far as their ability to make a store, PS and Xbox can both make a store that works perfectly fine with friend lists, trophies and whatever else you would want. Valve isn't anything untouchable. All it is, is more digital lock in. Just the PC version of it.
