Despite a somewhat shaky lategame, Dark Souls 1 had such a great map design. Whomever was in charge of that part @ FromSoft was an inspired genius. The introduction of limited Estus Flasks let the devs tighten up the enemy encounters/difficulty, which elevated the experience. And to top it off the balance between deliberate/tactical combat and action is just chefs kiss. So it gets my vote.

Special mentions goes to Dark Souls 2 as it was my first Souls game. It singlehandedly broke me out of the mindset that dying is a negative thing instead of a learning experience that enables you to beat seemingly impossible odds. And it has the best hub music in the franchise. ♡
But looking back after experiencing the rest of the titles, it sadly falls short.

We had the same poll last year and Bloodborne ran away with it comfortably. Interesting to see that it's lagging behind even Demon's Souls in this one. Need more votes though, The previous poll had almost 400 votes. This one is at just 158.
Was my original post in the post. But people wouldn't shut up about so whatever. It's fantastic but the others are most similar imo.

Dark Souls was great for its time. But if you compare them to others, it's hard to say it's up there.
Not sure I've ever ever seen such an interconnected world. Ever. Atmosphere. Etc. It's goated. Created a genre. Demon souls isn't why we say "souls games". "Souls like". "Souls adjacent"

Dark souls did that.

Let's get married? Available? I'm free. 39. In finance. Make enough to support my habit.

It's still great today. The level design, build variety, music, atmosphere, art direction, and overall package are still all fantastic. The one blemish is the outdated physics engine.

It's goated. goated

GOAT. Where's the goats? It's DS1

Jank 2011 DS1 is goated.

None of the modern fromsoft games for me. Will take the slow and methodical games for sure. The bosses Elden Ring are the drizzling shits bar a few examples, because there's less emphasis on positioning and more on hurr durr rolling spam which looks ridiculous. Not every boss needs a phrase two too. Also dislike how some bosses have moves that isn't clear at all on how to avoid and will pull them off late in the fight, thinking of you Malenia and SOTE Radahn.

I do like all of them despite saying that but Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1 are my clear choices.

Yeah I had to beat Messemer and Radhan with others. And that bothers me. There's just so much going on.

This thread got me to reinstall Dark Souls 3.

I was surprised to find that the controls are not as responsive or the animations as slick as in Nightreign coming back to it. Still a great game, though.

Obviously this is very opinion based, but I'm curious what the gaf community thinks. And I omitted Bloodborne and Sekiro because I'm considering the "sword and shield" iterations of the games... Also Bloodborne would definitely win.

So which is your favorite and why?

Personally, mine is Dark souls 3. The level Design, mood, story, and atmosphere are just perfect to me. Also, DS3 reinvigorated my love for games when I beat it in 2021. I bought it when it was released and gave up bc it was both too difficult and I didn't understand how some of the systems work. But I came back to it and am now addicted to games that are challenging. Recently I've gone back to beat Sekiro and I'm at the owl currently. Hopefully I can get BB on my PC so I can beat it too.

But yeah, that's why DS3 has a special place in my heart.

Edit: I got my answer, so have your Bloodborne in the poll lol
Dark Souls 1, Sekiro and Elden Ring. Prior to Elden Ring launching I felt Sekiro was a game of the generation (PS4 gen) but then it turned out Elden Ring was cross gen.

I assume most people here played Dark Souls before Bloodborne? That would explain them liking that game over Bloodborne.

I played Dark Souls after Bloodborne and the latter is so much better than Dark Souls for me. Hell Demon's Souls remake is also better than Dark Souls for me.

I find Dark Souls already too big and less dense than those 2 others games and I never actually finished that game, too boring at some point. Level design is not as good too.

They're all great games and I played them all, but I enjoyed Dark Souls 3 the most, the combination of all the content that makes the souls genre was the best there.

This poll and question gets asked atleast 6 times in an year. And will go on to create a 10+ page thread.

Answer is Bloodborne.

Dark Souls 3 > Dark Souls 1 = Demon's Souls (the original) > Bloodborne > Elden Ring > Dark Souls 2.

Completed Bloodborne a few days ago, masterpiece. It's a toss up between that and Demons Souls as those are the two I've finished, but I went for Bloodborne because I prefer the more aggressive / lack of shield combat.

Demon's Souls on PS3 for the nostalgia factor. I played it at launch and it was extremely unique.

Also, Tower of Latria and Shrine of Storms are the most memorable "levels" in any Souls games for me.

For me the rank would be something like:

Demon's Souls>Bloodborne>Elden Ring>Dark Souls 3>Dark Souls 1 and 2.

Hard to choose between Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring, they are all amazing in different ways. But ER just turns the entire concept up to 11, so I guess I'll go with that.

Although I loved playing Elden Ring, I prefer Dark Souls 3. Mostly because it doesn't waste the players time with the open world filler.

Elden Ring, simply because of many good QoL features.
I simply cannot go back to the other games' endless tracking to the bosses, through "platforming" and enemies you already cleared a dozen times, just to get another shot at the boss battle.
Screw that crap.

Sure, ER's open world is too vast, empty and unfocused, but that doesn't mean you couldn't do a better approach to it.

If a future Elden Ring 2 could combine the best elements of the DS games, Bloodborne and Elden Ring, that would be quite something.
I don't need Sekiro in there - that game is just way too restricting when it comes to builds and way too opinionated in how to play.

Bloodborne > DS1 > DS3 > Elden Ring > DeS

As epic as Elden Ring was the atmosphere and exploration didn't have the same charm as the other games.

It was immensely popular and deservedly so but it's a shame that so many people are unaware of the legendary games that came before Elden Ring.
