I guess he didn't know this stretch of road? What a shame. Terrible corner.
Jesus I saw the vid. It's still sad but come on man. You were 55, rich as fuck with a family and fulfilling career. You could have spent the next 20 years relaxing living the life. Wasted it to go fast in a car for 10 seconds.
Seriously. If you are actually going to roar down a winding mountain road like it's a car commercial or a James Bond movie, you would do well to drive the stretch first following the speed limit to learn the road before you try tearing down it at 100+ mphI guess he didn't know this stretch of road? As a gamer, Zampella should know better than anyone that you can't get good at Need for Speed or Burnout until you've raced the tracks a few times and memorized them
When the mistake ends in literal death, I don't think you can really use the 'I guess you've never made a mistake' thing. No it's perfectly reasonable at any age good lord. But props on never fucking up from 26 through the rest of your life. If only Vince could have been as perfect!
A little too much finger pointing about the reckless driving here. You've all done something spectacularly stupid at some point and none of you would deserve a bunch of posts pointing out you were being dumb before your body was even cold. Are we all this desensitized at this point?

Umm......ok?.....sure.Yes, living the dream of smashing into a concrete wall. Glorifying sport cars outside the racing track is as stupid as glorifying smoking and alcohol.
Never do it with a passenger either, wtf
Why not both. Installing barriers in potentially dangerous places doesn't require an astronomical budget. Yes, speed is the main reason for fatal crashes, but like I said you can also get distracted (or in this case blinded by the Sun), have a slower reaction, slippery surface, an animal on the road or a sudden puncture. Letting the barrier take the hit is much safer than slamming into concrete or falling down the cliff.Or maybe people can just follow posted speed limits which are there for a reason?
I don't think 'RIP' and 'yeah don't do that' are mutually exclusive.
If you wouldn't do it with a passenger, surely you shouldn't be doing it on a public road which has many other not-you people you could end up killing? The only thing standing between killing only yourself driving like this and killing an innocent (or multiple) is blind luck.
The above characterisation of driving like this as just 'being dumb' is very generous.
Another video, shows more of the turn. This one happened to be an accident as well..
Yeah the lack of barriers was definitely the main reason this tragic situation occuredWhy not both. Installing barriers in potentially dangerous places doesn't require an astronomical budget. Or they could at least make the bare minimum and fill the tunnel with warning signs, wouldn't be surprised if that happens now.
Well considering that was a Subaru Forester in that video it was a Japanese car so ???He lost control of the car pretty quickly here, on a not so narrow curve. Is there gravel on the road or American cars live up to their reputation?
Amazing how many people in this thread have never broke the speed limit. Those speed awareness classes in the UK really putting in work.
They especially would never break the speed limit if they owned a Ferrari. Never. First gear only.Amazing how many people in this thread have never broke the speed limit. Those speed awareness classes in the UK really putting in work.
Not do well, it's essential. Even a seasoned racing driver would not go full throttle on a course they haven't driven before.Seriously. If you are actually going to roar down a winding mountain road like it's a car commercial or a James Bond movie, you would do well to drive the stretch first following the speed limit to learn the road before you try tearing down it at 100+ mph

Yeah dude put in work. This is a big loss to the gaming community.Sad, Starwars Jedi, BF revitalisation and new projects will no longer be viable without this great man.

I wouldn't even dream of driving one of these types of cars even if I could afford one, basically a racing car with a number plate.I believe that's a subaru.
Regardless, there's a crest in the road as you come out of the tunnel (just at the start of the turn), you can see the suspension decompress if you watch it in slow motion which means no more load on the tires so that = no ability to turn any more, which is why it spits him off in a straight line.
You can clearly see the crest here:

As he comes out of the tunnel he's actually slightly over the center line, plenty of load on the front tires (car tilted forward, you can see front of the car is tilted down) as well so it looks fine at this stage:

But then they come over the top of the crest and you can see the suspension decompress on both front and rear (the gap between the tires and the wheel arch), at this point the tires are barely making contact with the road:

It's really unfortunate, but it's a demonstration of what can happen when you're overconfident and going too fast on a road that you don't know as well as you think you do.
At the speed he was going every detail matters, it's not just good enough to know the turn angle. Is there a change in elevation before/mid or after the corner? Is there a change in surface before or during the corner? Those details matter as when you increase the speed you are going your margin for error greatly diminishes. Even at much slower speeds that combination of tunnel in to a mid corner crest will catch plenty of people out, especially those in cars with far less cornering capability.
I don't know whether or not he has his racing license where they teach you the smaller details covered above, and strongly advise you walk along the road you are about to drive fast on (so that it's easier to spot things like changes in elevation). From his Instagram it looks like he did frequently take his cars to tracks, so he should have known better (and more importantly, should have saved this kind of behaviour for the track where it would have been far safer in the event of a mistake).
Many times, on an open stretch of highway that I know. Not in a supercar (ive rented one before), on a unknown road in a tunnel. Thats just fucking stupid.Amazing how many people in this thread have never broke the speed limit. Those speed awareness classes in the UK really putting in work.
Didn't he live in the area? Not looked into the story. If he never drove that section of road before then it was foolish, I'll agree with that. Many times, on an open stretch of highway that I know. Not in a supercar (ive rented one before), on a unknown road in a tunnel. Thats just fucking stupid.
RIP to a legend tho
I don't think so, he'd be eating the rock face instead. Looks like the barrier should be longer if anything to me.RIP, what a loss
I know he was speeding and all, but if it wasn't for that unleveled concrete slab on the side he would just be fixing some paint and a broken suspension.

Exactly, if the barrier was longer through the length of the curve he would have been ok(ish).I don't think so he'd be eating the rock face instead. Looks like the barrier should be longer if anything to me.
The common sense thing would be to understand that the reasoning you are applying to the passenger applies to everyone else on the road you are choosing to endanger, and then to choose not to drive like that, ie. the choice the vast majority of people make. It's just common sense, and always been a rule where im from that if you are wanting to take your car out and go for a spirited drive, you always do it on your own. That's all I was saying.
If he had not taken the passenger out, they would be alive. It's as simple as that.
