• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Discord will require an ID or Face Scan to fully use it starting next Month

Was a mess of an app when I tried it a few years back for an open source framework discussions and promptly removed it.

Looks like I'll absolutely never need to install it again now so good to know.

We don't have these backwater laws here in Illinois

Illinois you say.

Yeah surprisingly we have some of the most strict Biometric Laws in the nation.

At least here in Illinois we have some very strict Biometric Laws and we have a LONG history of winning against big players in Class Action Lawsuits including Meta, Amazon and Google so we are going to see Discord in court here if they go ahead with this implementation.

We don't want our Biometric data out in the web or in 3rd party services and Face/ID Scans fall under that.

This is why at least over here in Illinois people are screaming about ICE scanning people's State ID when they randomly detain or question US Citizens because it's super illegal to do so.

It was just a silly throwaway joke of mine, but that's really interesting to see.

It's it because people don't trust the federal government so much?

This law goes back to 2023 so it goes beyond distrusting the current administration

I just use it for in-game chat with friends, nothing of value is lost for me, but fuck those intents of removing internet anonymity, the FBI already knows everything about me no matter my pseudonyms anyway I'm the case I commit some real crime, I don't need politicians knowing if I thought the right things in order for them to decide if I deserve freedom

I sometimes read the Fallout London Discord server but that's it, i am not getting an ID or using facial recognition for just that, they can shove it, i preferred it before Discord, when gaming companies had actual forums anyway, this won't end well, Again!.

What worries me more is (retarded) AI moderation, I've been browsing a subreddit about people with permbanned Discord accounts and it's silly what qualifies as a ban, especially in 'child safety' cases. You can write you're 5 years old as a joke and that's enough, not to mention they can go after your posts from several years back.

eh, I'll stick with the "teen mode" then, which sounds very icky and I hope I'll never have to write this sentence again.

Discord was a useful tool for project coordination, bug reports and direct feedback with user base for me, when slack proved to be disfunctional (with subscriptions to keep history, and very bad UI layout and lousy android app, at least at the time I dropped it years ago).

Anyway, if that fails, I'm sure we'll find another live chat app to do our work.
...
...
that isn't fucking IRC.

A lot of US states are also introducing these regulations.

The way to go would be for Apple and Google to do verification on device (say Apple on iPhone) and basically set a user attribute to "over 18". This would be the only thing to be passed to 3rd parties.
Then charge every site on the internet through the nose for it.

Good idea though.

So it just limits porn? Why would I care? That literally changes nothing for me, and discord is the only way to talk to friends cross platform.

Not only are the people who are saying they're gnna switch friendless, but I'm suspecting they're all underaged too.

Just don't watch porn on discord. This barely impacts the apps functionality

No it's not 'just porn'. After being switched to a teen account you're going to be prohibited from seeing all kinds of content deemed unappropriate for underage users. So no more politics or 'sensitive content' (like israeli/russian war crimes or Epstein files which were proven to be a likely way to get a ban).

At the end of the day it depends what you mainly use discord for. You may not notice major changes or it can influence how you use it and what you're typing, especially with the increased risk of being accused of 'endangering children' and 'promoting extreme behaviors'. ;)

NOTHING you do on Discord is private. Assume everything you say and do is as publicly visible as a Twitter post, or a NeoGAF post

And if someone manages to associate a ID, face and all this data, a lot can be done to compromise a person privacy, security, money and identity.

LOL this is going badly for them, they are trying to backpedal so hard but also admitted they can figure out you're an adult just by spying on everything you have ever posted

One of the most convoluted apps I've used. And then it seems every server is filled with chats overloaded with emojis. I bet gokurho gokurho loves it
I came from Teamspeak and it just seemed over the top with irrelevant features. It was a heavier program too. I don't necessarily need for people to see what playing or listening to either.

Am I one of the few that can't stand having to use Discord?
Nope. It's a piece of shit. I still can't believe it requires 1 to 4 GB of memory on PC for a shitty chat app

Both Discord and Reddit are fundamentally piece of shit platforms but people use it because everyone else uses it because it got popular

I've never used it and never will.

But just doing a google image check to see what the structure looks like, most of the posts are quick 1 sentence posts in those random pics. And youre saying emojis too.

So are discord discussions like here on gaf where it can be some big posts (as well as quick posts). Or discord is skewed heavy to quick drive by one liners like a YT comment section?

Discord is asking some users to verify their age with government-issued ID — and that should seriously concern you.

In this video, we break down why Discord wants your ID, what this policy actually means, and the privacy and security risks nobody seems to be talking about. From data storage concerns to potential misuse, this move raises big questions about how much personal information platforms should be allowed to collect.

Is this really about safety… or something else entirely?

If you use Discord, you need to understand what you're agreeing to before handing over sensitive documents.

📌 Topics covered:

Why Discord is requesting ID verification

What happens to your data after you submit it

The risks of giving platforms government ID

What alternatives users have

⚠️ This is not legal advice — just an analysis of publicly available information and policies.

I don't get the hate for discord

The app could use improvement but it's basically just chat rooms, which I like a lot and grew up with

I primarily use it for matchmaking for old or obscure games that don't have well built in online systems

There is also a device I have called a cell phone and game chat. Shocking, I know.
Game chat in 2026? Just tell me you don't play video games fuck nevermind gnna give my phone number to Russian bot teammates in CS next time and tell them to make callouts in group call

I don't get the hate for discord
The reason I was always mad about discord was that they transferred former open discussions behind an app. I mean even reddit you can read free, but everything discord related is locked behind an app. Felt always like a step back rather than a step forward. And if I just want to talk with other gamers there are thousand of other possibilities. 🤷‍♂️

If you buy a house you need legit ID. And even that can be fraudulent. But nobody asks for a scan of your head.

So using a Discord chat board is such an important site needing Fort Knox security, they need verified ID that can go beyond buying a home. LOL

Jokes on people who paid $10 a month to Discord so they could spam emojis with animations

I never paid for Nitro ever and I found that whole idea fucking retarded to begin with

Premium users have nothing to worry about.

Once their ID and face pics get hacked and sold into the net, I'm sure Discord will apologize and offer premium users one free month Nitro and Transunion credit check service.
