Sony shuts down Bluepoint Studios

Even if they couldn't somehow remake Bloodborne, they could have remade Infamous 1 & 2.

A Infamous remake as well done as Demon's Souls would have been a slam dunk success among old Playstation customers. Shit I would have certainly bought that.

Can we stop pretending Sony isn't a flaming bisexually lit dumpster fire like almost everyone else in the industry now?

PlayStation really needs to get moved back to Japan as a whole. Westerners are starting to look rather incompetent at running PlayStation by the looks of it. Hulst serious needs to fuck off and thrown in the fire along with the Horizon IP.

Microsoft's failure this gen is the worst thing that could possibly happen to consumers. Right now, there's literally no real alternative to the PS5 if you want a high-quality console. The Switch 2 is fine, but at the moment it still miss a lot of major third-party titles.

I hate Phil. I also hate Herman. Those guys need to go ASAP. Why the hell are they still employed?
Spencer and Hulst exist solely to take the flack from decisions made elsewhere in their respective companies.
Phil's time especially will come when Nadella eventually pulls the plug on Xbox as it exists right now and someone needs to be blamed.
Hermen's position was made clear on day one: one step lower in the chain than Jim Ryan stood, now under Hiroki Totoki.
If (or more precisely when) Sony needs a bogeyman, he'll be sacrificed without a moment of thought.

weird choice sense the move nw would be to make more popular Sony developed IP instead of just being a platform for 3rd parties. this isn't the ps1- ps2 days where your platform as 85% exclusives. Exclusives now are basically Sony just whatever Sony and Nintendo put out them selves, and with gamers being pushed to cloud services and tablets are becoming very popular with the kids its going to be who own s the best tips and makes the best games will be the ones to survive... not just being a platform.

They could still make remakes ad Demons souls.

Motorstorm remake

Killzone remake

Syphon filter remake

Nah...kill.them but media molecule that dont make a fucking game let them doing nothing.

Lol

Yeah, like not even full remake required, just remaster with higher quality texture and make them all run amazingly well on PS5, and PC with those legacy IP. The studio could have stayed busy for years.

I guess this is consequence of loosing millions on Gaas, they will try to lover costs and BP is victim of this.
Hulst is playing with his excel sheets, too many red numbers.

After my initial "wtf" reaction to the closure, I realized I need questions answered before I rage about it.

For starters, was Bluepoint forced to do a live service game or did they choose to? Bluepoint made it clear that they aspired to move out of remakes and remasters into creating original games. They may have seen an opportunity there and took it. If so, and the project failed, then that's on them. If Sony railroaded them into it, then that's shitty and fuck their leadership for that.
That's not even up for debate. GG and ND were both put on live service. Sony invested in Bungie, Concord and Fairgame$ massively. I believe there was even a GoW live service game in development. There's nothing organic about this, it was a mandated push clear as day.

At the same time, we're operating in an increasingly challenging industry environment. Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.
YOU ARE ON ALL TIME RECORD REVENUE AND PROFITS YOU INSIGNIFICANT PIECE OF DUTCH SHIT.

God, how much I hate today's Sony. Maybe I should retire from high end console gaming and live one generation behind with the greedy fucks that are evil incarnate but at least don't close studios when everything is going their way.

Bluepoint was the one doing the cancelled gow gaas game.

I don't really know about this. Andrew House, Shawn Layden and Jack Tretton don't exactly sound Japanese yet managed the launch of the PS4 just fine.

Come on MS do the right thing hire them. Keep this studio together and people employed.
You think the company that has shut down more and bigger studios then Bluepoint will come to the rescue?

But of course, GAAS projects don't disrupt Single Player releases. Of fucking COURSE.
I assume you mean Sony's GAAS push as a whole and not the fact that Bluepoint wasted years and probably a ton of money on a GAAS title.

The only game that Bluepoint has made for Sony that has sold even relatively well is Demon's Souls Remake which sold ~2M, and then they spent the last 5 years on a live service game (do we know if they were put on the game or did Bluepoint request to work on it?).

Companies are in the "finding out" stage for having absolute retards plan and design games for the past decade and unfortunately good studios are the ones to suffer.

Number must go up MORE! The executive team doesn't have enough private yachts and vacation homes yet.

Bananza sold 4 million copies as of last year. Likely 5 million plus by now and it'll keep selling well into the Switch 2's lifetime like most Nintendo games do.

Bananza also isn't costing Nintendo $200 million dollars to make.

Nor does Nintendo expect the Mario Sports games to sell gangbusters. The entire Mario Golf Series has sold under 10 million. Tennis series is under 15 million.

I think Mario Tennis Fever selling 2-5 million in it's lifetime is a success for Nintendo. Imagine that, developing a game with a lower budget in mind and being happy to turn a profit.
This is a industry problem in general. most are pushing graphics and high budgets . the only company that having huge success selling lower budget games is Nintendo, and it needs the mario brand in most of those cases

DK only shipped 750k for the holidays so expecting a 5 million is not realistic. game will probably end up selling 7.5 million max. mario tennis is also having a really weak start.

They weren't. Xbox went full retard back in 2010-2011, when they went off to chase Nintendo's customers and kept the same mentality with the Kinect bundled with the X1. The Xbox division has been incompetent for 15 years and counting.

Full retard was probably closer to 2013, but I understand your point. That still doesn't mean Sony wasn't smoking hot and doing great stuff over the last 15 years. You can make a claim that they've slipped up since 2023 if you want, but no way can you say that about them for any time prior to that.

Sony could've left them alone and let them keep doing remakes independently. Instead of buying them, fucking them, and leaving the corpse in the alley

Yes, I agree. Bluepoint was once the gaming industry's darling when it came to remasters and remakes.
I believe that role has now been taken over by Nixxes, the current favorite when it comes to ports and, possibly, future remaster and remake projects as well.

I don't think Dutch man Hermen would ever shut down Nixxes or Guerrilla, not because they aren't performing well, but because they're Dutch studios that are very near and dear to his heart.

Bluepoint's closure is a big loss, but maybe Sony is planning to acquire Ember Labs, I think they're very fond of the Kena games.
A very small studio that's probably more capable and already gearing up to release their second game (the first Kena was cross-gen).

Unless somebody comes out and says Bluepoint were forced to make a GAAS then this is all conjecture and finger pointing.

Bluepoint very well could have requested and pitched the game to Sony for various reasons (it's what they wanted to make, they knew Sony wanted GAAS and thought it was their way out of remasters/remakes, etc).

Nah, my point is that if Microsoft had been semi-competent, they'd be relevant these days and Sony couldn't have afforded the fuck-ups they've had over the past 5 years. It would have given Microsoft some market share, but they're so far behind that Sony is effectively running solo.

too much asking so much for demon soul pc port instead backfired on studio who remake it...nice gamers thats how buying games is more acceptable than getting a port

This gaas initiative has just been one gargantuan failure for Sony. My god.
Hulst must have no idea about their actual customer base. They didn't even get to release all these games, but it's also clear there just isn't enough oxygen in the room to support them all. Maybe they were hoping to have one or two catch on, but that's literally throwing the studios that fail to the gallows. On purpose. Which is what happened here.

I was literally waiting for the next Bluepoint announcement to see if I was going to pick up a PS5 again. I think the hammer has nearly been nailed on this gen for me. Even if something comes out that looks like a must play, I'm not going to buy another system for one game at this point. PS6 won't enable new types of games either, it'll just be what we have with more fidelity. Which means software counts more than ever. They need to get their stuff sorted out really quickly.

Has any Sony owned studio released a successful live service game this gen except from established IP?

I somehow doubt that Sony forced Naughty Dog to do anything. I've not heard a confirmed story of Sony forcing any of their studios to go live service. Yeah. They bought a bunch of live service teams. That doesn't mean anything for their established teams. Why not Housemarque? Why not Asobi? Why not Sucker Punch? Why did they get away with not making new live service games but Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and Bluepoint were forced to?
