Resident Evil Requiem --- Open Spoilers Discussion ---

Working through insanity myself. Dunno if I'm going to bother doing the whole thing now (as it's not an achievement, just challenge) but I'll at least get it started. I'm tabbed out watching bodies fall into the pool to start up the final puzzle. Sigh...

I've 100% on ps5 and switch. 7/10 Weskers. Don't get people celebrating this as the 2nd coming.
People that love it like the new games. All there is to it. While I feel the 2nd half was very weak. A lot of people enjoy the dudebro shooter bits. RE3 Nemesis is still IMO the best game in the series.

Just because you didn't liked the game doesn't mean others feel the same way, for me this is easily 9/10 RE game.
About what my score would be. It might be closer to a 8.8 on that scale. I'd put the game in the B tier with it falling short of the A tier of the greatest in the series.

For me personally I like this game as much as OG RER, RE2R and RE4R.

and its1000 times better than RE7&8 and 10000000 times better than RE5&6.

I liked the RPD and it's 'member berries but yeah, it really should've been a bit more. They could've used the path beneath the station and down to the sewers to actually get you started on the path to the ARK. Y'know, kill some nasty abomination down there and reminisce about the fucking sewer-gator before dealing with the plants.

Now that I think about it, RE9 is kind of like FF9 because both games are riddled with call backs to previous games in their respective series.

They even have the same number lol. :)

Also is there a meaning to the prevalent 'rule of threes' with the objectives in the game?

7/10 doesn't mean I didn't like the game. It's not even a bad score lol.

Lmao, never better than re7. Re7 neither has a pacing problem on this level nor does it change between gameplay mechanics like re9. Also it's more a survival horror game than re9.

My man, I like your taste regarding these games. RE3 Nemesis is one of its kind.

Shilled RPD so hard and you're in there for like 5 minutes lol
On replays you are just a sec there lol. Just get one item from the library and bust out.

Nope, the enemy design in RE7 was so fucking bad, I take zombies over boring ass mole monster any day and I dont like first person gameplay in RE games.

Also Leon section might be more action but it was still actually fun while Chris section in RE7 "Not a Hero" sucked ass.

I agree that's it's better than 7 and 8. I'm glad that some enjoy it as much as the best of the series. It could've been that for me if they did some things differently like making the rpd much more deeper than what it was. Maybe removing the kid mission and adding more to do in Raccoon city, could've added a clock tower section. Was an incredible game for me, I'm very happy with it and it will likely be my goty.

Won't disagree about the enemy variety, but that alone doesn't make the whole game. I look into all the game has to offer.

But boy, that diss on not a hero?

I will say it again sucked balls.....fucking hell Chris doesn't even look Chris.

Who the fuck even is this guy? It just looks random soldier calling himself Chris.

Well I'm too old for this senseless debate about fictional characters lol. Some like the game more, while others expected more. Let's leave it at that.

Back to the game, 1 cool thing is, when you are ambushed by Hunks Unit and you go to the 2nd room, you can actually free that single licker to do the bidding.

got it to work on my third try. i have no fucking idea what i did differently...

Think this game is like a 7/10 btw. Middle portion of the game brings it right down, everything up to Emily getting lit up is a 9, Ark is like a 7 but RC is straight up 5/10 material.

If there was some good enemy variety and better level structure the environment visually wouldn't bother me.
Needed more locations in RC. Instead of circling the same area over and over. Why not have Leon make his way through ruined buildings like a school, mall, etc in a way that TLoU does and give us proper puzzles to solve. And definitely needed more variety with the enemies. The enemies in the care center were great. They all still had their personalities and the care center was nice to look at.

I think Leon would have been a nice palette cleanser to longer Grace sections much like how RE9 started. Leon in Raccoon city just dragged on a bit too much for my liking and it wasn't helped by the drab environments, a vastly inferior call back to RE4's castle section, a predictable enemies jumping on an "elevator" trope, limited enemies/weapons/upgrades, and all capped off by the silly motor cycle sequence. His lab sequence might have been worse with the fight versus spec ops soldiers and then one of the final fights versus a room jam packed full of lickers made me realize something...the power dynamic between Grace and Leon had flipped in the lab. Her tools were just better at dispatching somewhat spongy enemies than all of Leon's leveled up gear. RE9 is a curious game as it feels like Capcom was trying to serve two different RE audiences. I personally feel the opening half with Grace was much more successful at the classic formula than the later half with Leon was with the more action focused titles in the series. I think both styles are hurt by being squeezed into one 12 hour game that swaps back and forth rather than having the entire runtime dedicated to either style. The first half of the game flew by for me and then during Leon's section, I remember a conversation that you and I had about appreciating shorter games. I thought to myself, "the people saying this game is 10-12 hours are wrong, I must be closing in on the 20 hour mark", only to roll credits a few hours later and check my play time to see ~12:30. That's a long way of saying that Leon's sections felt like an eternity to me.

I personally I had blast with Leon's RC section, sure I still think Grace section especially in daycare center was much superior experience but Leon section was still super fun for me and didn't really drag experience down like Chris section did in RE7&8.

To me RE9 did best way to include legacy character in RE game.

Trying to accomplish this right now.. let it run for 20 minutes. Didn't kill any in the grinder section, but still got the wrong message when draining the pool.. not sure why that is though.
yep. my third try i got 'tons of blood' (rather than 'lots of blood'), & there was the fucking doll! like i said: all tries from the same save, did nothing different each time. hang in there!...

Got it this time. The first time I waited about 20 minutes and then saved my game at that typewriter. Only got the a lot message. There were two zombies Left Alive down there because I didn't want to shoot them at all. Loaded that save up and let it sit for another 10 minutes and this time I shot one in the leg at the very end to push him into the grinder when the message about it being almost complete came up. All zombies ended up shredded and this time when I went down the tube I got the message so I'm good to go now.

👍

3 playthroughs as Grace was tiresome and boooooooooring as hell, but i did.

Dont get me wrong, for 1 playthrough she is fine, but the lack of other weapons make replaying her section repetitive and really really boring, cause you just have one way to play..... glady is over.

i m lowering my score to a 7/10 after this plat, having to listen/see to Grace ( a 28yo woman ) stutter and stumbles everywhere like a 5yo for 3 playthroughs was a little too much.

I'm a lifelong fan of the series since the original RE2, and I've compiled my thoughts on this now that I've beaten the game 3 times and marinated on it. I think this is a middle of the pack Resident Evil game. That's not a bad thing, because even middle of the pack games like RE7, RE8 or RE5 are really good games. But I think there's too many shortcomings to place it in the Top Tier of the franchise, and tbh I also think some people might be deep in a Honeymoon Phase for thinking this is among one of the greats. I'll going into my positives and negatives:

Positives
  • Grace is a great character and the VA nails the role.
  • The entire Grace section in Rhodes Hill Care Center is 10/10 Survival Horror material.
  • It's brilliant the way each zombie feels unique in Rhodes Hill, making each encounter feel fresh, especially on first playthrough.
  • The gunplay is pretty fun, and I enjoy performing all the different executions.
  • The Blood economy was a cool mechanic.
  • The visuals are spectacular. Playing on PT with my 4k Monitor and 5080 was a treat.
  • Leon is badass as usual, no surprise there.
  • The story, while wacky and stupid at times, was fun to experience. One of the most story heavy RE games yet.
  • Fighting Hunk was a great fanservice moment.

Negatives
  • As usual, Resident Evil continues the trend of really long drawn out sections where you play hide and seek. It's particularly bad in RE9, with the Orphanage being the worst, clocking in at 12 minutes to get through. On replays it's a chore to get through these sections and I really wish Capcom would take the hint and give us a Skip option on replays.
  • Raccoon City overstays it's welcome. It goes on for too long and it really doesn't help that it has such a dull and drab aesthetic compared to how brilliant Rhodes Hill was. Yes I get it was nuked, but that doesn't excuse the fact that they could've done more interesting shit with it.
  • Leon's section in RC is basically a 3 hour long Raid Mode. All Survival Horror elements are removed, and the devs didn't do anything interesting with it. You don't go through the Raccoon City Zoo and run into mutated animals, you don't go through the Clock Tower, you don't go anywhere interesting the shakes things up as you progress. You just look for 3 Bomb Parts fighting nothing but Zombies. You do fight the Spider but that's at the very beginning.
  • Enemy Variety is severely lacking in RE9, especially compared to the last two games which were RE4R and RE8.
  • The Motorcycle Chase felt like RE6 rearing it's ugly head again. Felt like it was ripped straight from those shitty CGI films.
  • RPD was a letdown. Half the building can't be explored, and it's over WAY too quickly.
  • Grace has nothing to do in the Final Battle and it feels wrong. She has a personal stake in Gideon's defeat since this fucking guy killed her mother and ruined her life. This was a giant missed opportunity for the devs to have it so we have to switch between Leon and Grace during the final battle, and it's a combined effort between the both of them to defeat him.
  • The exploration doesn't feel as rewarding as RE8 and RE4R. For example RE8 had Metroid-lite elements to it's exploration where acquiring certain items allowed you to revisit previous areas and access different parts of them, allowing you to acquire gear, upgrades, and treasure. The exploration in Leon's section just doesn't feel worth it most of the time.
  • Gun Customization in Leon's section is just okay. Unlike RE4R, the "better" versions of guns don't feel that different.
  • The game feels lacking in content. No extra modes upon completion is a bummer, though to be fair RE4R also had this problem on release, but at least we knew Mercenaries was only a couple weeks from release. With RE9 with have no idea when we're getting DLC or any kind of extra modes for that matter.
  • Personal gripe, but it felt very weird to me that Claire and Jill didn't get mentioned AT ALL by Leon and Sherry, considering everyone that survived the RC Incident had this infection. Like what was going on with them?

I think Requiem is ultimately an 8/10 game. It has a brilliant first half that then declines once you reach the second half of the game. I don't know if it's Honeymoon Period or the Leon Effect, but I think a lot of fans who are absolutely gushing about this game right now will look at Requiem less favorably after enough time has passed. And if you don't, and it's still in your Top 3, then good on you. But I just think it's a pretty good but not great entry.

You could have gotten the machine pistol.

2R>REmake>2>9>5>8>0>3R>3>7>CV>1>6 without much actual thought put into it.

Only reason 1 is so low is because Remake is so goddamn superior in nearly everyday that I don't see any need to ever go back to it. Also you'll notice 4 is missing. I never played 4 because at the time I was annoyed it didn't seem like a "real" RE game and it was only on GC.

even then it changes nothing, enemies in insanity are the most bullet sponges enemies i ever seen in a game ( for reference the screaming lady take TWO requiem bullets to die ), what make the combat even more boring, they take too much stagger and even more to die, insanity is doable, but is boring as hell.

In my Insanity Playthrough I used the Injectors to clear the Singing Lady and the guy near the bar, grabbed her stronger pistol, and then equipped her Firepower charm. Zombies go down with 5 or 6 headshots after that. Gets even easier when you start using Stabilizers.

The general sentiment seems to be
  1. Casual + collectibles + random trophies like the fighting zombies/parry/etc
  2. Speed Run + No Heal + No Blood then unlock unlimited Ammo + RPG + unlimited ribbons
  3. Insanity
I unfortunately didn't know I would fall in love with the game as much as I did and my first play through was just a eh I don't care about all this stuff because I'm never going to platinum it anyways run so even after 2 playthroughs I'm still down 7 trophies.

Damn, that doesn't sound bad at all.

nice! i was wondering about the zombies that were still alive. i'd kneecap them, but they wouldn't all get ground up. the time i got it to work there was only one, so maybe? who knows. anyway, congrats!...

RE2OG has more content then RE2R so I can't agree with that and the fixed angles elevate the tension. Not to mention the alternate B scenario routes being much different then the RE2R counterparts. To each their own though.

I did the reverse with 2 and 3. Insanity is really only difficult that first hour. Once you get the Injector and Grace's Handgun, it gets way easier. It's really just that beginning hour where you have to stealth around.

I think the only thing you need to buy after your first run is the charm that increases Grace's firepower. That makes a big difference in Insanity. After that once you beat Insanity you should have enough to buy Infinite Ammo. Infinite Ammo makes the Speedrun w/ Minimalist an absolute breeze.

I started 4 Remake (PS5 Pro Resolution Mode + RT + High Frame Rate Mode) last night and got to Chapter 3. I like it quite a bit so far but the controls and how Leon feels to control are rough coming from RE9 IMO. Leon feels quite "loose" and the aiming is much improved in 9 IMO.

Also fuck those grandmas with the fucking fork things (can't for the life of me remember the fucking big fork things you pick up shit and hay with).

Yeah i know but its only the handgun that i've used already for 2 full playthrough , yeah you can make you life easier, it doesn't make less boring, at least for me.

Leon was more fun since you have a lot of options, going no scope sniper full upgrade was awesome, pop'n heads left and right with one shoot felt great.

Yeah, its almost what i did, i could play with infinite ammo ( and i did for a time ) but it felt cheap and i turned off the option.

What? We get those things out every time we need to have a riot about what someone in the game's industry is doing.

pitchfork
Fucking hell. Yeah, pitchfork lol.

In my defense I've had a long ass day. Woke up with a migraine and even after taking my prescription medicine and taking a nap right after waking up I've had a headache allllll day.
