Sadly in the last few months we've lost a lot of the prominent gaming side posters in political threads.

I agree with @Gonzito that a thread ban would have been preferable over a blanket site ban.

You thinking that "prominent posters" deserve special privileges and protection is the problem here. Resetera is notorious for having a multi-tiered system where some posters are more equal than others. If that's the kind of place you prefer, maybe you should go there

Some people have a hard time not getting worked up about politics (obviously why it's not allowed as a general rule). Obviously, major events like Iran are dictated by politics, so the political aspect comes up to some degree. As we see in this thread, Epstein thread and others, most users are able to touch a little on the political background of issues without going full-throated partisan. Some people can't, and end up acting like idiots.

I've got family and friends just like this. They're great to talk to about anything else, but if politics come up, I have to walk away. They become insane and instantly heated and irrational. Maybe we can find a way to help protect people from themselves?

People having different political opinions isn't 'special privileges'. A thread ban would at least have posters who post good, relevant, content elsewhere on the forum not be banned from everywhere entirely.

Having different political opinions isn't enough to earn a ban from the current GAF, in case you haven't noticed already with the numerous posters who have conductied themselves civilly while disagreeing with each other about the subject of this thread

I don't disagree with you entirely, here. You're right, when someone's entire personality is dictated by their partisanship, it is bad. But ostracizing those people from a community with differing opinions will only force them to seek out echo chambers; places where they're never exposed to the terrifying reality that other people think differently than they do. That's why places like Reddit and Era have become what they are today--hiveminds where differing opinions are not only rejected, they're punished.

I just wish there was an easy way to help these people realize their opinions aren't the only correct ones, and that nothing in life is black and white. We all have blind spots in our mirrors.

Looking at his posts in this thread, he spent most of the time demonising the US and Israel while downplaying the nature of the Iranian regime. Besides excessive force in any scenario is wrong regardless. Particularly since it can later be used by the assailants as a defense or mitigation in sentencing.
