Nvidia at Live GTC : DLSS 5

I find it funny all the people saying it destroy artistic intent when those said companies are working with Nvidia on the demos today

DLSS 5 will debut in games including AION 2, Assassin's Creed: Shadows, Black State, CINDER CITY, Delta Force, Hogwarts Legacy, Justice, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, NTE: Neverness to Everness, Phantom Blade Zero, Resident Evil Requiem, Sea of Remnants, Starfield, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Where Winds Meet, and more.

By providing developers with detailed controls such as intensity and color grading. Artists can use these controls to adjust blending, contrast, saturation, and gamma, and determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain the game's unique aesthetic. Developers can also mask specific objects or areas to be excluded from enhancement.

Once people get over Grace looking different due to lighting in this Nvidia pre-release demo and actually see what the game devs come up with it in the future, the opinions will change radically.

That may be true, it may not. But people are going to (rightfully) judge what they're being shown today, not some hypothetical of what things could look like down the line.

I really think if this was presented as the next path tracing version, people would have had a completely different take on how "shit" it looks. I think the response has everything to do with the current AI sentiment at large. Anything and everything suddenly "looks shit" when they are told it's AI.

Uhh no, absolutely not. Before I even knew anything about what was behind DLSS 5, I immediately knew the second I saw the first example that this was AI slop. There's no mistaking the gaudy, uncanny-valley, artificial look.

If you want every game to look 'realistic' then sure it's very impressive
And one day they will make us move from 720p to 1080p which looks the same. They can keep their updated lighting and mapping, I want games to look like the light rendering we have had the last few decades because we are use to it not that it's better.

The opinions here are very interesting. I've mentioned it before, but neural rendering is going to be the next big boundary for video games. There's a reason the next-gen consoles have NPUs. What Nvidia is doing here is a "proof of concept", to demonstrate that they have it working in real time. It's clumsy, but it illustrates the point very well. The tech works. We won't see a broad "on/off" driver level option that gives Nvidia control over how every single video game looks. Nvidia have already clarified that, but it's not really possible given the hooks necessary for the model to actually work.

What we will see next gen are areas of frames rendering with prompt info for the NPU to grab and work on. The best example of this I've seen is grass rendering. Instead of rendering lots of GPU particles or billboard sprites, a big green surface texture is rendered with a info texture layered on top, to serve as the input for the AI to identify. The AI then generate the grass, using the info to understand lighting, movement, wind, occlusion, and so on. The result is your video game now with photo real interactive grass across an entire scene. It's insanely impressive. I imagine we'll see this applied for things like clouds and water as well. Will developers use this augment their character models and lighting? Maybe - but not as standard this generation. The NPUs in the next-gen consoles won't have the horse power to do everything at once - they'll have to pick their battles.

John is having a bad reaction to this and more specifically DF not informing him about this content. He skeeted he only found about any of this when the DF video was published.

He's blacked out his profile pic, header and removed a lot of his recent blue-skeets about DF coverage.

But it's not light. It's AI slop.

"DLSS 5 is the GPT moment for graphics — blending hand-crafted rendering with generative AI to deliver a dramatic leap in visual realism while preserving the control artists need for creative expression."

DLSS5, take a leap past photorealistic into AI slop perfection.

Devs can now save a ton of money on modeling faces since they'll be copied over with generic AI sex dolls.

Long have i waited for the day to officially say DLSS is worse than FSR.

the inclusion of this "AI-sloppify" feature in it alone makes me vindicated in my AMD purchase.
Not because AMD has superior upscaling or anything but fact is they're too far behind and retarded to ever get to this point and thank god for that 🥹

FSR Radiance Caching seems to be exactly the same thing to me.

Radiance Caching predicts light propagation through a scene based on sparse path-traced samples, replacing many secondary ray bounces with learned predictions.

Damn, the Fellowship of the Frame is breaking up.

John is like a middle schooler saying "dont hit me up only real ones know."

LLMs are one type of AI. There are several others.
Deep Blue, which played chess, uses GOFAI. It used alpha-beta search, computational brute force, and knowledge manually coded by chess masters.
LLMs are text generators, they use deep neural networks, are trained on enormous amounts of text, and have billions to trillions of parameters. They learn to predict the next word. So it's not the type you'd use to play chess.
Something similar would be AlphaZero, which uses the same principle, but it was a blank slate. You gave it the rules of chess as a base. With machine learning, it learned to play and to be an excellent player.

I'm aware but this is what they mean when they say "AI can't play chess"

Not the likes of deep blue

Why stop here, generate the whole game. Hell, make DLSS 5 for movies, yeah, fuck them directors and auteurs! Fuck the artistical intent! AI! POWER OF THE AI! YEAH! FUCK YEAH!

At this point AI bubble stunts are just cursed timeline that we can't escape.

this just looks more like cleaning up raytracing which is similar to what Ray Reconstruction did

I like John but he needs to chill the fuck out sometimes. Like why is he even thinking this is about him? What a strange thing to take personally.

He's clearly perpetually online and needs to get away from it more often.

As soon as they mentioned the tools already have controls to adjust features, I can already see the promise in this. Eventually pipelines will improve this further, and offer more flexibility to stylize or just maintain existing art direction instead of the default photo-realistic beauty filter this uses that always produces uncanny valley.

Low-effort AI slop really has done a number on the psyche of the internet though, because that's all they can associate this with, rather than where it will go only getting better.

I'm more curious as to what he just found out a few hours ago. What's happening?

From what I'm reading in replies it sounds like some money exchanged hands or something but I'm not sure.

Even though I'm very impressed, sure in certain ways there's room for improvement (which will undoubtedly come). First Grace shot looks perhaps a bit too "AI-like" but the second darker one just kicks ass. Also other games like Oblivion don't seem to "slopify" the faces that much. Changes in lighting are also in some places an obvious step up that only fools can deny.
Now the real bummer will be hardware requirements it seems to me, I don't think 5060ti will do this in playable form at least, but hope I'm wrong.

But it is also clear that this dude has some mental problems.
I don't think anyone should care about this weirdo having internet tantrums. He indeed does love his untouched by modern tech Saturn pristine 3D models made with handful of polygons.

honestly... I get it. I wouldn't want to be associated with that DF video either.

I'm just so tired of GAFers man. People will willingly cheer this on because they've been brainwashed into having nothing but utter contempt for game developers because of some minor "woke" stuff.

None of these DLSS5 images look good and this is overreach for what was simply supposed to be a program that cleaned up jaggies and made 1080p look like 4k. we don't need the entire game's visual direction dictated by AI. That's for the artists.

This guy really needs to unplug. Its like he reacts the way he feels obligated to for his fanbase. These are his colleagues in a professional outlet ffs.

I like him too. He has a lot of passion for videogames and makes very good content.

But it is also clear that this dude has some mental problems. This is not his first crash out.

Nice avatar. She haunted my wet dreams for years
