Marathon - Reviews Thread

Lol if you dont want to acknowledge that Halo is a trendsetter on consoles I dont know what to tell you 😂
I never said that.

It was an entry in a popular genre at the time, so "chasing trends" Whether it redifned the genre is irrelevant.

Nah mate, I haven't touched Marathon at all. And I don't need to.

Do I also need to play Superman 64 before I can say the game is bad? Lmfao

If 'extensive playtime' was suddenly mandatory for an opinion, half the thread would have an invalid opinion. Including the positive fanboy takes that only played 3 hours.

Plus, I was only echoing what reviewers said. Don't act so fragile because you pre-ordered this trash.
I know I shouldn't justify this with a response, because it feels like I'm talking to a 3 year old here but please indulge me...

"haven't touched it, don't need to" - how do you know it's good or bad then without playing it?

"positive fanboys that have only played for 3 hours" - 57 hours here, 37 launch, 20 server slam. Crushed.

"echoing what reviewers said" - oh ok so that's how you know it's trash. you just regurgitate shit you heard online, got it.

"fragile because I pre-ordered" - I pre-ordered because the game is great. Sorry if that hurts your feelings.

See you in the afterlife sheep.

You said people weren't liking the game, clearly that's not the case as illustrated.

Numbers are fine. Highguards numbers where not fine.
Please stop, it's one thing you claiming people liking the game but the lack of players suggest otherwise. For instance it had 143,000 on the server slam but only a few days later on it's launch it only had 88,000 and it's now declined to 60,000 and that's top end figures. The average is pretty bad but enough just about to keep it afloat. Problem is what are those numbers gonna look like 3 months from now, I don't think it's looking good but good you're enjoying it 😂

This is the review thread not the CCU thread. You seem to be lost.

STFU dude. The people playing the game really enjoy the game. User scores indicate that. Just because you view the game as GAAS slop don't mean it is. If anything, Bungie making Destiny 3 would be "GAAS slop". At least with Marathon Bungie took a chance at doing something very different.

You may not like it. The hardcore nature of it may be too niche, but piss off saying it would be good if the game failed because it is not for you
And just because you don't view it as slop doesn't mean that it isn't 😂 works both ways

I love marathon and yet I've said several times it's horse shit to request a delay in reviews.

If sites opt to do a review in progress that's probably the best or drop a review now with th caveat to state you will update it if the ranked or 4th raid map changes your overall score when it drops.

People need to know what they are paying for in the first 5-10 hours just as much as what's at hour 100. However those first hours are more important nowadays to buy in.

JRPGs like trails in the sky IMO don't get good until the third and final act. You're asking 30+ hours of ho hum until you will become a true believer. Does that excuse the terrible play section in part 2, or the slow pacing? Fuck no. Yet for me when I look at the whole package the game is still a 9/10 despite half the game being meh.

Normal people aren't going to see it that way. Nor are they going to dump 30 fucking hours to get to the good stuff.

Marathon is basically saying hey wait 3 weeks+ for the game to get really good. Fuck that. Release all that up front. Or within 1 week of release if you need to stage gate.

The online gaming community has moved past this shit after the first few times with Destiny 1&2 did it. Still do it but shorten the time considerably.

Final note: The reviews fall higher than what I would've thought the average game journalist would've scored this. I was expecting 5-6… for me it's a 9/10 and one of the most memorable games I've ever played.

Stop what? You said people aren't liking the game, the user reviews suggest otherwise. thats all i never mention CCU's or anything else.

How exactly are people not liking the game? The folks that have not played it or bought it?

Which other AAA studios with the pedigree of Bungie are making SP shooters?

Everyone has their different takes on pedigrees but I'd count AAA wise, Doom. Cod. Battlefield. All have single player campaigns and some extra modes. Well the last ones I played. Yeah there not Halo imo but what can you do

Bungie gunplay is my favourite though

Hopefully they will make another Sp + traditional MP after D3. But Im not gonna shit on them because I enjoy there other games.

I would of much rather they remade Marathon 1 and 2, and added another story to play before people can can carry on the story through the extraction mode which they have currently.
It would of helped bring in SP gamers, and made everyone happy. Well most people

I get people want the SP experience, and I want a new SP ip from them. But them doing Destiny gave me hundreds/thousands of hours of fun and exciting moments.

Marathon is starting doing the same, but differently and with a whole lot of added rage when I lose lol.
Im not even the biggest PVP guy but enjoying myself

Titanfall 2 was a great game, but then they want and made Apex, which is ok, Im sure its amazing for its fans gut its not my thing.
But people let them carry on making Apex without hating on them 24/7

Just gotta let them get back to SP, I think after D3 thats the next one, I hope. How many different online genres are there for them to do lol.
There new "Halo" is what they need after D3, but they need some new writers for that.

Maybe if you keep asking they'll make you a hero shooter though lol :p

Saving Private Bungie

Between this and Crimson Desert. Same critic score (this is after begging to delay reviews for Marathon until it left the pseudo early access period). Crimson has a much higher user score. CCU speaks for itself.

Metascore for itself is useless already ... when involving publications bending over to a request to wait and not review the already sold version ? ... yeah ... no. Access media behavior 1 on 1.

Crimson has 93 reviews so it's locked in.

Marathon has 21? So room to go up or down still.

The user reviews on metacritic had 5k crimson desert folks jump in quick to voice their opinion on like a 150 hour game lol.

Marathon had 100 users of which 600+ are positive and then you have 300 people giving it 0/10s for the weirdest comments.

I don't think that site means shit for any game.

Reviews of Spanish media that for some reason still aren't in MC/OC:

  • Hobby Consolas: (90/10)
"Bungie proves they're still the gods of the genre with an extraction shooter that's impossible to escape."
"The return of Marathon as an extraction shooter had everything against it to fail... But Bungie always hits the mark. The studio's three strong points fit perfectly with the extraction formula, resulting in a game you always want to play just one more round."

  • Vandal: (8/10)
"Addictive, confusing, exciting, but above all, full of personality."
"Bungie delivers a solid extraction shooter despite some decisions that make it unnecessarily complex."
"Marathon is a very good shooter in its strong points, but it also needs tweaks in many areas. Exciting, fun, complex... and imperfect, for now."

  • GameReactor.es: (7/10)
"The new Bungie shooter has a solid foundation, but there's plenty of room for improvement. The Cryo Archive is just around the corner, but we're comfortable giving Bungie's extraction shooter an early score."
"The foundations of Marathon are solid, strong and work really well. And although the game lacks a killer hook, or simply maps that properly build upon this solid base, I feel confident enough — even without the Cryo Archive — to recommend Marathon based solely on this pretty fantastic core loop.
That doesn't mean Marathon is a fantastic game in itself yet, but it could very well become one, and that's already more positive than what can be said about many other live-service games.I will update this review with my impressions of the new map, regardless of whether it drastically changes my overall opinion."

  • 3D Juegos: (Recommended)
    "The best of its class"
"Not many of us gave him much of a chance, and it has completely changed my mind as I played it. Marathon isn't the most original or the most charming game, but it's so well-polished and well-designed that it easily becomes a new standard for the genre."
"The size and density of the maps, along with the enemy AI, are so finely tuned that every match feels interesting and explosive. The progression system makes you lose your fear of taking big risks and playing aggressively, even if you can't dedicate too much time to it. It won't be a game for everyone, but those who connect with it have every reason to be happy."
Meristation, Eurogamer Spain, IGN Spain, AnaitGames still don't have review

Higher than crimson desert now with more outlets still left to come.

Way higher average than I thought.

It's baffling that a game users reviewed well on Steam, journalists reviewed well, and yet it sold like hot shit.

User score on PlayStation is 4.57 stars as well. I think people just have a thing against Sony and Bungie for making a GAAS game at this point. Can't really see any other reason.

You just need to look at this forum to see people just want Bungie to fail. Every place with user scores without the need to buy the game, it s scoring bad...but Steam, Playstation etc it's scoring really good. That says it all. It's not even about a bad game releasing because clearly the game isn't bad.

The way this has played out has been perfect. Media outlets and influencers (useful idiots) are trying to save the game, while the actual market is completely apathetic, alongside the Internet Army being insanely relentless, fulfilling their roll in this mess, massive layoffs and Sony shutting down more GaaS studios.

And let's be real, this game is a 6/10 at best, and it should've cost $20 at most....Layoffs are coming to Bungie regardless, and their future is not even guaranteed. Calling this a win is a massive understatement.

I find it highly humorous that you are annoyed at other people liking a product. Are you saying that reviews have no baring on a games quality?

What other first party studios do they have that are going to roll out better single player games? Like most of their closures are single player game studios. Where are these studios going to come from and how do you know they will be any good? If you are resting your hopes on Sony single player output from new studios for their success? All I can say is good luck with that.

The average review score is significantly higher than a 6/10. Just because you hate the game doesn't change reality.

Of course, just because its reviewing better than you'd like also doesn't mean Marathon is saved either. The game isn't doing well despite reviewing decently.

And let's be real, this game is a 6/10 at best
Correction: It's a 6/10 at worst, a 10/10 at its best.

I can easily see people playing Marathon for a few hours, having a miserable time, and calling it a 6/10. That can be a reasonable score based on how you're interacting with it.

But man when it clicks, you feel like you're 10 years old playing Metal Gear Solid for the first time.

They're not. They just said wait for all the content to be unlocked before you put them out. I mean it makes sense to me. The hate brigade will say anything, you should know that by now. Thank god for the ignore button on here.

I find a major platform holder "asking" access media to hold off reviews to align with post-launch marketing to be highly unethical. Marathon being a good game doesn't change the questionable precedent set with reviewers. Companies should provide media previews under NDA before launch if the goal is ensuring everything is incorporated into day 1 reviews.
