Monitoring the situation in Iran

Omg is that your response to EVERYTHING???

"Fuel prices are rising"
"Yeah but people only bring that up because they have TDS"

Same people pointing to fuel prices now didn't care about it when Joe Biden was in office and it was going up. They also didn't care about prices when it plummeted and just pretended it was never an issue.

"Gen Z are angry about the current financial situation"
"They have TDS"

100% the reason. They think if "forever wars" stop that those resources would be used on domestic issues. That's all Gen Z ever talks about is owning a home.

I'm hoping regime change and positive change for the people of Iran comes too. Also hoping energy markets can get back to normal soon.

There's diesel shortages all over the place over here and I spoke with a client today who is ITK with road freight in Australia who told me to stock up on things for a few months because it's likely supply will drop. Even suggestions garbage collection may stop if diesel shortages continue. Not ideal with a baby on the way in a weeks time and the associated things which need to be thrown away!

Yeah its fucked there already:

And apparently government has decided garbage collection isn't an "essential service" so the garbage companies arent getting their full allocations of diesel....

Most normal people DID complain about it, and those who shouted about it most as the main point are some of the same ones handwaving it now, is that any better?

Unlike the Biden fuel price rises which came from a global pandemic, this rise is entirely the result of a decision by Trump.

Hope this helps explain the difference.
Yes, don't you see, the magic cough makes everyone blameless...

Government intervention and decision making across the globe from incompetent leaders had absolutely nothing to do with it.

A global pandemic that saw oil prices go negative for the first time ever? HAHA.. ok. I was paying under $2 for most of 2020-2021. Cheapest I paid was $1.65 during the height of the kung flu.

Wasn't until Biden figured Trump spent trillions on pandemic response, might as well take advantage of that and then had the Fed tell everyone inflation was transitory until they were forced to admit it wasn't.

America has an empire to maintain, but the Gen Zers don't believe in that system because they blame it for housing prices thinking that housing supplies will pop out of the ground the minute the bombs stop.

Whats the general tone of the reporting on this in America?

It, like Trump solving the Ukraine war in the blink of an eye, seems to have initially been pitched as a trivial exercise and that the conflict would be over in days.

Now, with deployment of troops and Iran saying that they're not interested in negotiations, has the tone shifted?

I'd argue the point of these news is that westerners want their militaries to be better than that. It might sound silly to some but it has been an important point especially for the US since at least WW2 where one of the (many) reasons they did day time bombings instead of night time bombings like the Brits was to try and avoid civillian targets as much as possible and back then media was much more controlled than nowadays.

Truth is many, many people don't really like to turn on their TVs to see that their tax money is being used to bomb schools on the other side of the world.

Forget about the second WW2 because you lose your argument there (specially when you consider the Pacific/Japan)

About the rest, I tend to agree with you.
That's exactly the difference when you have free press. Your institutions tend to works with accountability because a "cover up" and lies tend to hit hard than admitting your errors.

This is exactly what I was arguing some pages ago about the same incident.

In fairness this isn't quite the case with US as with smaller countries. It you are a small country heavily dependent on energy imports then price increase as a result of global shortages are somewhat inevitable but the US is a net exporter, so either as a result of specific policies or a lack of strategy will be a big contributor to price increases for a country like the US. Also, the main reason why energy prices are high in Germany is a result of the Ukraine war, however it was made worse through policies such as closing nuclear plants and choosing to become reliant on gas from Russia in the first place. Most cases, energy prices are a combination of internal and external factors. Even now the US produces huge amounts of oil which could be limited for domestic use.

I've always heard a major bottleneck in the US fuel issue is our refinery capacity, and we haven't built any new ones in over 50 years. And sadly, a lot of them are located in gulf coast area, and can often affected by hurricanes. And one just caught fire in Texas recently!
Damn, better raise them prices some more!

Yes, and that would be a policy decision. This isn't about necessarily blaming particular individual presidents for this. To use Germany as an example, they deliberately chose to become more reliant on gas from Russia, even after the annexation of Crimea. So they made very bad decisions. Now in the case of America, you have massive amounts of land and energy resources. It's going to be more of a choice in the US than even Germany. House prices for example should be very low. We're not talking about the Netherlands here. If you were to disect the cost of the house you would find a dozen planing laws and regulations that make that price. Same would be for oil and gas. Whether it's the Republicans or the Democrats they act as if they live in Bhutan

Biden supply side inflation was caused by post pandemic demand surge combined with the invasion of Ukraine. It requires conspiracy theories to blame Biden for them. On the other hand it requires conspiracy theories to not say Tariffs and the Iran war were something to do with Trump.

"TDS! TDS! I bet if Obama did this they'd praise it"

I swear you have TDS tourettes.
Gen Z are way off base of they think their financial situation is based on any president(well you could lay blame on Woodrow Wilson). They should have more critical thinking. If my grandpa could buy a house for $4500, my dad for $45k, and the current average of $450k, that alone should tell you the problem is NOT because of cosmetic surface level policies by any one president.

Who knows what caused this its a total mystery but if the stock market is doing great then who cares!

Another dead piece of shit

I don't blame Biden but like European leaders he did nothing either. In America's case it wasn't strictly supply driven mainly because it never imported oil and gas from Russia infact it exports oil and gas as it did throughout the pandemic. It wasn't literally supply constrained. Even Russia is limiting it's gas prices by limiting exports. Unlike America, the UK is literally supply constrained. However, in the UK, half the price of gas is tax/duty. Now while this war is nothing to do with the government, we should be reducing the tax to alleviate inflation but we are not. Actually there is a planned fuel duty increase. Thats a choice.

Wonder if instead of troops on Kharg, USA just wipes out the whole island's infrastructure via bombing and maybe add on knocking out the electrical grid too. The latter was promised this weekend but Trump has given the Iranians a chance to negotiate a deal.

Because Iran retaliating against the Qatari natural gas fields/infrastructure will be catastrophic for global energy prices.

I get the risk there but Iran claim they will retaliate like they have some extra firepower they haven't yet used but they have been attempting all these infrastructure attacks already and they have been largely batted away. At some point they will be in a place where their offensive capabilities are more or less largely/fully depleted.

They showed what they were still capable of when the Israelis bombed their natural gas infrastructure. Qatar got whacked. Trump had to tell Bibi he was naughty and don't do that again. Iran have exercised some restraint. Heavily degraded yes but still capable.

I think Kharg will be objective #1 for a ground offensive. Not destroyed but used as a bargaining chip in the near future.

Neither governments or central banks have any direct power to ease global supply side shocks. They are not that powerful. I guess there are things like strategic oil reserves or grain reserves but that doesn't work for everything.

At this moment some countries are experiencing higher jumps in oil prices than others. This is due to the specific differences between the countries from reserves to tax policies. For the US, it is a net exporter of oil. which means it exports more than it imports. America is not now and hasn't been at least since 2020 when it became the biggest producer, oil supply constrained. It's not like some Eastern European countries that literally found themselves with less oil and gas after the invasion. It's more market driven in the US than physical supply issues. The US produces a surplus of oil. America is one of the few countries that can influence the price of oil which it does. I don't think Americans realise just how fortunate they are.

Those of us who don't hate America surely do. I would not live anywhere else in the world.

I can tell that a lot of Americans follow European politics because they think the reasons why they have energy and housing issues is the same reasons we do. Obviously the Uk which has a population of almost 70 million and a third the size of Texas is going to have certain housing pressures that the US doesn't have. Energy is the same. We import more oil and gas than we produce. We literally are limited by supply. Luckily we are able to buy the surplus oil and gas from the US as with Norway. When I hear Americans say gas is up due to supply issues even though we buy your excess oil, then it's not for that reason. If in some scenario the US genuinely had supply issues, it would stop exporting. Europe is buying our gas and oil increasingly from you guys. Need to let us know if you don't have enough....

No matter what you think, the Israelis are on a completely different level in terms of intelligence and capability for such a small
country.

Is this what happens when an entire generation is raised on Call of Duty? Delusional doesn't even begin to scratch it, more like deranged! 😂
They supposed to persians yet behave like arabs with AI and videos :messenger_tears_of_joy:

As if they are not attacking it already.

They should be for how much money and tech the US gives them.
Well they have created a lot + plus they have been operating in the region for generations at this point. Like since 1948 at least I would not be surprised they were sending spies and others everywhere.

I've been hearing this for YEARS, especially after Ukraine, but doesn't seem to be happening, at least not at a level that really matters.
Yeah, I also expected a famine when Ukrainian war started because both Ukraine and Russia are huge grain exporters. Did not happen.

Putin really reaping the windfall from this war.

Zero blowback from the U.S. even with claims that the Russians are providing Iran with satellite information and targeting data.
So what do you expect them to do even if Russia provides the intelligence (that does not do much)? lol Well it is time for Europe to step in Ukraine. They told that Iran was not their war, then I guess Ukraine is. Send troops there, more equipment, intelligence etc. etc.

The most interesting situation is how the world energy layout is changing right now. Turkey now might have issue with its "energy hub" problem. Especially if the Ukrainian front escalates and BlueStream and TurkStream are destroyed.

They only attacked Ras Laffan in Qatar after the Israeli bombing of the Iranian South Pars gas field infrastructure.

Israel escalated, Iran responded, Trump had to tell Bibi to stop before shit really got bad.

Thats not to say Iran haven't been launching attacks against other countries long before the South Pars situation.

Weren't they bombing Saudi Arabia and others? Plus Iraq, Kuwait and others? Qatar situation was hilarious considering that Qatar was one of their sugar daddies. UAE bombings were also hilarious considering that UAE historically has been the main contrabanda hub for Iran.
