Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Overall rendering is more even in shadows imo, crimson has some really ugly spots.

But the art design and color usage of crimson make the game more pleasant to look at imo, even if less detailed, and the city simulation and destruction sell the world much better than shadows, which has some decent destruction but nowhere near as good.

I cringe at the thought of sony next open worlds going against crimson...

Their safe ass, super polished design that take no risks is gonna look even more arcaic...

P.s. shadow combat was shit after a couple of hours.

Here is the game on PS5 Pro. It looks about 5x better on my actual TV screen. I hate how PS Capture really kills quality/ cant capture HDR correctly. Completely blowing out the details in the clouds on the second image. The sky was blue on my TV

When are we going to get this ugly lighting out of gaming? Glad to see Nvidia pushing real hard via PT & AI.
?? We got rid of them literally a month after RE4 launched. RE4 is a cross gen early 2023 title. Star Wars jedi Survivor had great lighting enhanced further by RTGI. Starfield, FF16, Forza 8, Alan Wake 2, Robocop and Avatar closed out that year very strongly. Excellent lighting in all of those games with some not so pretty looking areas but overall they were a generation ahead of RE4 which tbh looked worse than Village because it didnt ship with RTGI. If you are on PC, you can try turning on the Path tracing mods for all RE remakes.

The tech was in the engine but the RE2/RE4 teams just didnt want to use it for whatever reason. A year later, dragon's dogma 2 shipped on the same engine and had great lighting. not without its issues, but i was very impressed with how it handled indirect lighting and especially proper shadowing and darkening under trees, in canyons and other areas with mountains where sun was blasting the area with direct lights.

Then you have your UE5, Anvil and Snowdrop games that have fixed these ugly lighting issues from last gen games. I would say since early 2023, I havent really played a game with ugly lighting other than DS2 and FF7 Rebirth. Skipped Yotei for precisely that reason.

Edit: Forgot about Indy and Doom. Ok, add them to the ugly list. Even RTGI couldnt save them. They do look ok with path tracing with some areas looking excellent, but the base versions were ugly as fuck.

Here is the thing though, playing Crimson Desert for the last 15 hours or so only made me want to play that safe, super polished Sony garbage. It's way more janky than Euro jank. I am stuck every few minutes having to google stuff which is annoying. And the combat is just so simple and safe i am pretty much forcing myself to play it.

I get why some people like these massive open worlds with an even more open ended world design. I get the appeal, i truly do, but i guess im one of those beta bitches who just love the structured and scripted Sony copy pasta. I ended up binging Knight of the Seven Kingdoms last night instead of playing this game. And now im thinking of buying Ghosts of Yotei. Thats how frustrating this game has been for me.

Different taste i guess, i can't wait to return home to play some more, controls are almost a non-issue after a couple of hours and no offence, but imo the combat in this one absolutely destroy the combat of shadow and you thought that one had great combat, so yeah, agree to disagree.

You know i like sony games as much as you, probably even more but their open world design is stuck in the past, sony would hate to have multiple yt compilations of weird glitches and bugs like you can find for skyrim or crimson or even rockstar games, but those are the ones that push open worlds forward, not freaking yotei or sp2.

I can enjoy both but i would like to see sony take some risks.

Speaking of Yotei ...

I'm a big an of its Kurosawa mode, looks fucking awesome in motion. Really nailed the old school Samurai movie vibe

- Also makes the combat a bit harder.

It's a bit better for the foreground, I don't like at all the color of the grass, it's beyond green, it's like some radioactive shit spilled all over. But from the middle part of the image, say to the city/castle it seems to me like the image lacks a bit of that depth/haze for distance.

One thing is clear, the image is more punchy.

Bit off-topic but I know a lot of you are interested in this game as well.
Jesper Kyd has released a song from Samson into the wild.

The mood seems on point, Kyd is so underrated... which is fortunate in a way, at least this way Hollywood never stole him from us.
Can't wait to try this game out.

Great music that really fits the dirty 90s city vibe they're aiming for.

I think that ex-Rockstar artist might be on to something. I really like how punchy the game looks with HDR off.

Looks great, but still the grass looks off, maybe it's my TV blowing the greens to hell, idk. I've seen this in Shadows too, but it's like just in specific scenes or times of day like here.

But I didn't seem to notice or be bothered by these greens in any other game, but just these 2.

Best looking thing today

It's all CGI including "gameplay". Once you see animations you always know if this is CGI or not. Because gameplay animations are systemic meaning they repeat patterns and CGI animations are "free" which creates this "movie" effect that doesn't go away during "gameplay". Killzone2 first trailer was best example of it. It was CGI that was made to look like gameplay.

Game could still look good as there is nothing really in that trailer that can't be done (especially with PT) but small studios always take shortcuts somewhere. Like Ready At Dawn "The Order 1886" that looked insane on PS4 but turned out to be 4 hour demo with no ending. Or "Mortal Shell" that was supposed to be Dark Souls competitor with insane graphics but turned out to be 10 hour game with barely anything in it.
