Newegg has a 10% off sale on iPads. Do you guys think that Apple or another retailer will top that next week?

I doubt it. Apple always seems to be 10% at best and I've rarely seen other retailers beat that. Most of the time going through other retailers is just a good idea if you need some other perk, like you have spare giftcards, a card for that store, etc. They otherwise lock down hardware prices pretty well...

Thank you very much. Think I'll go ahead and pull the trigger for my mom's B-Day/Xmas present (same month).

Slightly thicker iPad with higher-res display in March, aluminum iPhone with 4-inch display this summer?
iLounge reports that their most reliable source has spilled some details on what’s to come – in terms of redesigns – in 2012 from Apple. First on the roadmap is the iPad 3. The report says the tablet will be slightly thicker in order to make room for a “higher-res” display (Retina Display?) and for that rumored dual-light bar display system. Although it’s possible that this new iPad will be introduced in January, it’s reportedly on track for a March launch (which makes sense).

Looking into the summer, iLounge says Apple’s working on a new iPhone for the summer – a launch timeframe we’ve heard whispers about, too – with a four-inch display and an aluminum casing. The new iPhone is said to not be that fabled teardrop design we saw several times this year, but is something entirely new. It is a bit longer than the iPhone 4S, just like the prototype teardrop design was.

iLounge is also sticking to their original rumor that we’ll be seeing a thinner MacBook Pro sometime in 2012 which seems all but certain at this point.

March Launch for Slightly Thicker iPad 3? iPhone with 4-Inch Screen in Summer?
The source indicates that the iPad 3 is planned to launch in March and that it will be approximately 0.7 mm thicker than the iPad 2 due to the need to incorporate a dual light bar system for the higher-resolution display. The iPad 2 currently checks in 8.8 mm thick, which would make the iPad 3 approximately 8% thicker than the iPad 2 but still substantially thinner than the 13.4 mm original iPad.

I don't hope it will be thicker than iPad 2, even if it's by 0.7mm. =/

Well, if anything us iPad 2 owners will be able to brag about having a thinner device while the iPad 3 folks enjoy their brick retina display.

I kid!

Interesting rumor for sure. That screen is going to be so awesome. I'll probably keep my iPad 2 and wait for the iPad 4 when they inevitably can proclaim "retina iPad now even THINNER"

Bullshit linkbait rumor articles.

Who is surprised that the iPad 3 will have a retina display and will launch around March; the iPhone 6 has a new design; and a thinner MacBook Pro is coming out eventually?

I could have given these scoops to iLounge and 9to5Mac myself.

Are you guys telling me not to post these links?
Because that's the exciting part for us with iPad 1s waiting for the iPad 3. Seriously if we have nothing to talk about then it's all really dull.

Nah it's fine, just expect the thread to dump some salt on them since many are 50% odds guesses rather than legit sources.

Any rumours yet about iPad 3 and possible performance jumps? I keep hearing about retina display but I don't particular want/need that - my iPad is used at arms length and the current res seems fine. For games in particular I'd rather have that GPU doing more with the current pixels than struggling with 4x more.

As a refresh is probably due around March (?) its making me wonder whether to hold off or get one for Xmas.

(already have iPad 1, this would be more for me to use, as the iPad 1 is being held hostage by the kids most of the time)

there are next rumors that the iPad 3 will have a turbo button, for those times you need it to go a bit faster than it usually would.

Apple A6 will probably be a quad core Cortex A9 like the Tegra 3. Not sure about a GPU bump, because it's not like the current one is limiting current use.

how much of a bump would it need to be matching Vita specs?

and if its retina display, wouldn't the current GPU be stretched?

It would need a different GPU. No one knows if they will upgrade it. The 4 had the same GPU as the 3GS and it wasn't that big of a deal.

I've got a question that I'm pretty sure I know the answer to already but I want to ask just to make sure. If I were to get another iPad 2 or even a future model of the iPad, I can always redownload the games I've bought any time, correct? There's no DRM preventing that from happening?

Correct. Apps are tied to your Apple account, not your device. Furthermore, the iPad will run any iPhone-only apps in a letterboxed mode. The only restriction, I think, is apps/games that are ever delisted - if they go from the store the only way to get them back on your device is if you have a local copy.

I think new neoGAF is messed a little on my iPad. It no longer fits to the screen by default, rather it's zoomed in.

Is there anything I can do to make it fit to the screen automatically, rather than pinch or double tap? And no, I don't want to use the web app.

That's what I figured, thank you.

True, but they are equally as irritating. Image retention fades, but not quickly enough on these panels. No other LCD I've owned has the problem. Only iPads. And on the first iPad 2 I had, the IR was effectively a burn in, as it never completely faded. I've now learnt to never leave the keyboard on the screen for longer than it takes to type this.

I noticed some image retention on my iPad 1 a little while ago. It's mostly when there's a constant fixed high contrast image, most notably the google search box in safari.

I first noticed it when I was opening Pulse, which has a completely black background. I noticed a faint images of my safari header, and I thought it was at pulse loaded safari or something underneath.

Not long after, I realised it was simply image retention.

It's VERY hard to see, and only on certain backgrounds. I was u Nader the impression that it's just a part of the screens and that many people have it to varying degrees, and most don't notice.

After playing with my sisters ipad 2, ive decided im going to jump in with the ipad 3.

It's one of those devices that you really need to use to appreciate, but i wont buy if it doesnt come with a significantly better DPI. Hopefully they have ironed out production issues with the retina display.

Wow, the new google app is pretty good. Really speedy with nice little animations and gestures.

Has the light bleeding been fixed on the iPad 2? I bought it close to launch and i've had blotches of yellow light bleeding around the screen that never went away. I'm going to go get it swapped tomorrow for a new one while its still under warranty. Have people had issues with the new iPad screens?

I thought the screen res for the iPhone 3G was fine until the iPhone 4. The retina display on the iPad 3 is going to blow minds, that kind of pixel density in a 10" screen is going to be amazing. I hope they do optical lamination too, I love that on the iPhone screen...may not be feasible on a large screen due to costs, but I hope they do it anyways.

I'd be really surprised if ipad3 had a retina display. The tech to mass produce that sort of screen doesn't seem to be there yet. I expect an overall performance boost and some Siri-like gimmick.

It would be really disappointing if there were no retina display in the iPad 3. I would upgrade from the iPad 2 in a heartbeat for that one reason alone.

Seriously, it might be hyperbole, but Operation Ajax could be the proof of concept that launches the emerging motion graphic novel storytelling medium.

I don't even really like graphic novels, but CIA:OA blew me the fuck away. I was glued to my iPad for 4 hours until I had read through the entire thing. The way the story is presented, the visuals, the animations, music, real documents, real video, etc. It's just sublime. It's the first time in a long time I got the "magic" feeling of using an iPad.

What's the best way to stream video from a mac to an iPad? Versatility of formats is important, with subtitle support if possible.

Reported Retina Display iPad 3 with J2 codename shows up in hidden iOS 5 code
Digitimes recently reported that their supplier-based contacts say that Apple is currently prototyping two versions of the third-generation iPad. The site says the iPad 3′s are codenamed J1 and J2 and Apple has not yet decided which model to launch. Based on code strings I have seen (shown in screenshot above), the J2 iPad mentioned in the Digitimes report is definitely an Apple device. Based on Digitimes accurately predicting the iPad 3′s codename, it seems at least somewhat plausible that the site’s attached rumors of a Retina Display and a dual LED-bar system to power this ultra-high-resolution display are accurate (or at least planned possibilities).

More Claims of a 2048x1536 Resolution iPad 3 Display
"It's happening--QXGA, 2048x1536. Panel production has started [for the next-generation iPad]. There's three suppliers," Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch, said in an interview today. Shim confirmed other reports that cite three companies, Samsung, Sharp, and LGD.

With a res that high we will see an A6 processor right? the current one might suffer under that res in heavy duty apps.

As for thickness I don't mind a tablet being 0.7mm thicker, if I was to take a tablet anywhere it would be in a cover in my backpack so that small size increase is fine for what it will give, but for pocket carrying damn is an ipod touch damn slim since it has no phone parts in it.

Is it me, or does the Auto-Brightness function much worse under iOS 5.01? Under previous versions, the Auto-Brightness worked like a champ, but now it's freaking dark all the time and I don't see it adjusting to the same degree as before when I expose it to light sources and darkness.

There will probably be an A6...but that's just a name. The A4 had the same CPU and GPU cores as the previous chip but upclocked, and that handled a 4x resolution bump too. They could do the same again...and/or add cores this time (I don't think the new ARM or PowerVR cores will be ready until like late next year at the earliest).

I'm a bit worried about the quality of the new retina display (if it comes with the iPad 3). They already had problems with the thinner XGA display and I don't want to exchange the whole unit once a week, because the QA at Apple and the supplier sucks.

Wow, people are getting worried about the manufacturing quality of unannounced, speculated products now?!
