Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Just watched all of the videos and press conferences. I'll be surprised if this isn't extremely successful. MS and Sony better not give too much of a head start here. I do hope that you can play Wii games like DKCR, MG, and Zelda on it without needing a wiimote.

same, I hope they're keeping that shtick secondary. I think they plan to. The new controller seems to be their main thing of next gen. Oh I thought you meant new games, nvm then.

How the hell would that even work? Especially Zelda.

I think the main 3 console manufacturers are going to pursue distinctly different markets and design philosophies. Nintendo is going to go more "casual," and by that I mean less specific markets, more broad markets in an attempt to appeal to everyone but not cater specifically to anyone. They'll try to use the Upad as a controller that entices people already familiar and attracted to the iPad. At the same time, they'll try to create enough 3rd party and online support to satiate the gamers that end up picking it up simply because it'll be the most affordable. In essence, they'll try to repeat what happened with the Wii but not let the core gamers down.

The new xbox is going to try to open up to larger markets as well, but more as a media hub. It'll attempt to rule TV/Movies, gaming, internet, and social functions. It will try to create a broad network among Microsoft devices by becoming the centerpiece of the living room. They will heavily market its social and media functions while downplaying the hardcore gaming aspects. At the same time, it wont forego the hardcore gamer in terms of capabilities or specs, MS will just assume the majority of current 360 diehards will follow where the game development goes (and they'll be right).

Sony will try something akin to MS's strategy but fail miserably by providing similar features but poor accessibility due to subpar integration and exorbitant hardware prices. They will try to cater more specifically to the hardcore gamer as they did this generation, but will be unable to emulate the success of xbox live or the casual appeal of the Wii U. As you can see, I kind of have a bias against sony and don't really expect much from them. I could very well be wrong about them, but I more or less foresee a repeat for them of this generation.

Man, if the Wii U has 1.5 GB of memory (I'm hoping for at least a gig), that means most games will probably dedicate a whole damn gigabyte to textures. Ooof.

Well I just generally hope that waggle goes away. It's cool for casual bowling games etc, but it's really not fun with traditional games.

How the hell would that even work? Especially Zelda.
I haven't played the game yet, just wishing waggle would go away.

Is this a joke post or is this serious?

Yeah, they claimed the kit has double the RAM of the final console, which IS TYPICAL of almost all dev kits for any system ever really...so they implied the range is at least 2 GB and below 3 GB IIRC, and said its actually more than the bare minimum of this range, so it probably has something more than 1 GB of RAM.

I'm a pessimist so I'm crossing my fingers for at least 1 GB.

Well, you'd use a USB cable for others, obviously. But I mean, just laying the controller on the system to charge it seems convenient.

No way. I want my dock on the coffee table or the nightstand. I don't want to walk over to the console by the TV to see my friends list or to turn the system on or anything other than to change the physical disc.

The sensor bar should be 5 devices and hook up to a USB port.

[LED]----[CAM]----[LED]----[CAM]----[LED]

This way it gets 3 LEDs equidistant (this is much more unique than two LEDs) and two cameras (these should be similar to what's in Kinect). This should allow much more detailed pointing and kinect/move type functionality.

The problem is that this breaks compatibility with old wii-motes. Some of that could be gotten around by allowing the wii-mote to fall back to old functionality, and allow the middle LED to turn off when needed, but it still adds complication to the end user. I can just imagine the cries of "what do you mean my old wii-mote doesn't work with this new game.

Something to think about. I certainly hope that Nintendo is.

Unnecessary if you ask me. But the sensor bar is more than just 2 LEDs

just put the camera(s) and a mic in the middle and call it a day.

The existing Wiimotes can understand up to around 4 points of light for pointer functionality.

http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/

his makes the Wii Remote one of the most common computer input devices in the world. It also happens to be one of the most sophisticated. It contains a 1024x768 infrared camera with built-in hardware blob tracking of up to 4 points at 100Hz. This significantly out performs any PC "webcam" available today. It also contains a +/-3g 8-bit 3-axis accelerometer also operating at 100Hz

So not only does the Wiimote "see" in HD already, it already does it extremely fast. It also becomes more accurate if you have a 4 led array, but most (if not all) sensor bars are only 2 due to costs and form factor.

Let me rephrase. 3 Groups of LEDs. 3 points of light in a line at the same separation is more unique than 2 points of light at a range of separations.

I already knew that the wiimote processed a list of light sources in hardware and transmitted them to the console, but I wasn't sure of how many. 4 isn't enough, but if the wii-mote could take a software change to pick out the 3 in a row it would be ok. Just picking out the 4 brightest is....a bit underwhelming. software could fall back to work with older wii-motes, and newer ones could have a software switch to pick either the 4 brightest or to pick the three that are in a straight line and equally spaced then it would be....better.

I haven't played the game yet, just wishing waggle would go away.

Having just spent 30+ minutes trying to get Link to pull a sword out of a damn pedestal using a PS2 controller in Dolphin using a M+ plugin, I can assure you that's nearly impossible.

(I have VERY legitimate reasons for not just using an actual Motion+. Don't be quick to judge.)

I *suspect* the Wii remote doesn't do any triangulation itself, it just sends details about the points of light it sees back to the console which does the calculations. If the console knows it needs to interpret three points, it's probably okay.

...provided the remote *can* send more than two points in the first place. That's slightly up in the air, and something we couldn't determine without access to the development information.

It can send back the entire 1MP image that the infra-red camera sees, and it does send back basic data. I've only used the Flash API, but the controller server interprets and spits out things like pitch / yaw / roll, X1, Y1, X2, Y2, button presses etc. I'm sure its perfectly possible for them to do more with what the camera sees.

And here I thought it was all about motion control...

anyway...
Vigil talks Darksiders II controller ideas for Wii U

"One thing I saw at the [E3] press conference that I thought would be cool is using the controller as a kind of AR thing. Because we've got a mechanism in the game where you throw stuff. In the first Darksiders game, you'd have to pick something up and throw it at a target. It's always a little difficult to use a joystick to aim precisely and you could have it so as you picked up the [Wii U] controller it would sense when it was held up in front of you and it would turn into a display showing you what was on the screen, and you'd move the target with the controller." - Colin Banstead, Vigil

We would assume that the uMote dock will stand it up like this:
Y4U92.jpg

therefore it shouldn't be too big.just kinda long.

That is how I have presumed it to be too. I am pretty sure that Nintendo hinted at such in an interview or Iwata Asks around the time of E3, when they were discussing the evolution of the U from initial ideas to the form it took as shown at E3. If I rememer correctly they were discussing the merits of having a second screen, on the controller, that was 'always on' so the player could keep an eye on messages, game requests etc without necessarily having the console on. That sort of dock would seem to facilitate ease of viewing and charging. Having enjoyed the ease of charging with the 3DS dock I certainly hope they take this approach.

I love a big dock.

Who doesn't?

Zelda isn't waggle.

But saying that "waggle should go away" implies that you have not played the Godfather: Blackhand Edition. Rent or buy it immediately.

Yeah man that's sexy.
Stick a Nintendo logo on the bottom and BAM.
Also, would be nice if Nintendo went for a glossy finish on the controller - I know, smudge central, but would look so cool.
Think Wii-mote-esque, alongside the Wii.
So the console and controller itself are nice n' shiny.

Now that we know that Mario Kart 7's Communities feature (which is similar in concept to Steam groups) was originally meant to be an OS-level feature for the 3DS, is it possible that this is a feature that came out of Nintendo's collaboration with outside group(s) for building their online infrastructure for Wii U, or do you think it's not related?

Not related. It was older in concept and the staff says it was an idea that came during Mario Kart Wii development that slowly materialized. The things Iwata hinted at was something for the Wii U we will likely see next year. Whether it is Steam, or a custom set of features developed for Nintendo's console from external developers.

Where was this information shared? Is there a back story to this somewhere or an iwata laughs or something?

If i remember correctly than the source told us, that final WiiU will have much less Ram than 3GB but at least 1 GB, don´t think someone was mentioning that the devkits would have less then 3 GB. If Nintendos range (subjekt to change) was 1-2 GB for the final console, the Devkits could use 4 GB. If Nintendo would aim for 1-1,5 GB the devkits would use 3GB. Don´t kill me, that´s how i understood this thing. ;)

For first party, pikmin 3, Mario spinoff, fzero, or Pokemon stadium

Third party: ninja Gaiden 3 or anything from capcom

Capcom supporting WiiU early on will be a great boon to the system.

In terms of the outlook for the next fiscal year (the period ending March 31, 2012), the package market in 2011 is expected to contract for the third straight year as a result of a new portable game console to be introduced for the Nintendo 3DS, with sales of the next generation console to hurt sales of the older console, being between seasons, and an expected market value of 19.9 billion dollars (down 15.0% from the previous year). From 2012, the full adoption of next generation consoles is expected to once again stimulate growth the market.

Capcom will want to be ready for that. And they are probably adapting their MT Framework to work on the WiiU:

80% of Capcom’s proprietary integrated development environment “MT Framework” development process is common to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms, realizing development efficiency that significantly reduces costs and shortens time to completion to one-third of the traditional time required for development... In response to market needs, we are always expanding platform compatibility, which now includes the Nintendo 3DS, Wii and the iPhone

But what I find most curious, and I wonder if it gives us any clues to their relationship with Nintendo:

Capcom is concentrating on the development of coin-operated games that make use of extremely familiar and popular proprietary and other content including “New Super Mario Brothers Wii Coin World” in an attempt to differentiate our products from the competitors.

After playing some Brawl and F-Zero GX this week, I just started thinking about how epic Super Smash Brothers Next is going to be. 1080p @ 60 fps (they need to do this), epic effects and digital surround sound. Man. Those will be some good nights. Also F-Zero in HD (with first-person view on the Upad?) is going to be epic. Let's hope F-Zero isn't dead for consoles, and maybe that they got the Sega team that did GX together again. They did such a good job.

Nintendo seriously needs to show us something though. There's so much potential there and they have been horrible at showing it so far.

No way we'll see anything for SSBU, outside maybe a CG trailer, before 2013.
They've barely even started (if they have at all).

They started making game they just didn't show any at E3 same with not showing 3rd partys, they wanted to show the idea from the pad but mess it up and mix everyone up by doing so

There were quotes from Sakurai around E3 saying he was trying to figure out how they'd differentiate the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. It sounded like, much like with the initial Brawl announcement, he wasn't sure if he'd even be involved with the project. The next Smash Bros. was in extremely early concept form (if that) at the time of E3 2011, and is likely not much further along now.

How do you know this?

Anyway, I don't expect it soon, but the prospect of it makes this an instabuy anyway.

Because in an interview with Famitsu, he said that they were going to start hiring when KI was done (which we all assume was in October, and it's just delayed to space out games).

LOL when Iwata announced it wasn't that the first time sakurai even knew he was going to be making a new game?

Well, he and Iwata have been talking about making a new one since SSBB was out, actually.

I've been thinking about this too today. I can't wait to see what Skyward Sword Link and Zelda look like on the Wii U.

I hope they don't make the game look as 'gritty' as brawl and make it more soft like Melee.

LOL when Iwata announced it wasn't that the first time sakurai even knew he was going to be making a new game?

This was true of Brawl, though Sakurai did not work with Nintendo at that time. Iwata specifically stated when he announced the Wii U Smash that he and Sakurai talked about what they would do for the next game.

There was an Iwata Asks up (or something equivalent) that week talking about what he plans to do to differentiate the games.
