Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Yes, Nintendo did cause confusion, as evident by the plenty of people I know who were unsure what, exactly, was going on with the system, confused as to whether it was a legitimately new platform or a peripheral for the Wii. These people are not the kind who go over E3 with a fine tooth comb or intensely follow every piece of news that trickles out.

Nintendo's E3 2011 Wii U reveal was an absolute mess, and I'm struggling to fathom how an argument could be made otherwise.

Unless you stopped watching the conference right after the controller was shown, you'd have to be a complete moron to think that it was a peripheral. Nintendo did fail to make it clear because they never brought out the console (which was the ONLY mistake they made other than maybe not saying "Wii U is a new console"), but it was far from "an absolute mess." If they had just shown the controller, said nothing about a console at any point in the conference, and never said anything about any games, then I'd agree that it was a mess. As it stands, they made two small mistakes that had significant repercussions.

dude. Even the goddamn trailer showed non-stop emphasis on only the controller. It was confusing shit. Not for us specifically, but generally speaking it was.

They just announced a new console without saying anything about the actual console focusing almost exclusively on the controller while the Wii U itself sat in the background looking almost identical to the Wii.

What kind of moron could find that confusing?

hahaha it's almost as if the controller was the new console and the box itself was the peripheral.

Because they're fed PR announcements that come directly from Nintendo. The actual E3 showing was a confusing mess. I get what they were trying to do, but they did it poorly, focusing far too much on a controller which could have been easily mistaken for a Wii peripheral, and all of the hands-on demos not only looked like Wii games, but in same cases appeared to be modded Wii games (looking at you, Super Mii Mario whatever).

They showed not a single game (no, a rushed demo reel compiled of footage from other platforms doesn't count), and spent not a single moment explaining what the console was about. No details on the UI, online, connectivity, or graphical output beyond a ho-hum garden tech demo. Hell, the name itself, 'Wii U', alone failed to differentiate the system from the Wii.

Yes, for anybody paying attention and 'in the know' it was clearly a new console. But the idea that this was obvious to everybody is absurd. I was asked by several people who were casually paying attention to E3 what the deal with the Wii U was, legitimately confused as to whether or not it was a controller peripheral or revised Wii, or a whole new system entirely. Most of them, when quickly looking for info, found nothing except a bunch of pictures of the controller and the Wii look alike tech demoes.

Nintendo revealed a console, except the console forgot to show up.

Following the conference live, there were tons and tons of GAF members thinking that it was just a new controller for the same Wii.

It was hilarious to say the least.

And yeah, the WiiU would best be served with a different name. I mean, look at the 3DS. People are still asking me when they see me playing it if they can play 3DS games on their regular DS.

They concentrated on the unique thing about the Wii U, showing a box that sits under the TV is pretty useless( especially as it is going to be bigger than the last box people bought).

And the confusion would have been totally fixed by say "Wii U is our new console!" and taking the console on-stage. I don't see the argument here. They made two small mistakes that snowballed into something big. Also, if someone watching the conference saw that third-party reel and couldn't put 2&2 together, they need to get an immediate vasectomy/tubal ligation.

Well considering it is unlikely they knew what is going inside the box at E3 it would have been foolish to concentrate on it, far better to show the important stuff( controller, proof of concept of the controller & general tech demos).
them rushing out the announcement (if that is indeed true) doesn't excuse the fact that it was confusing because they may have rushed it.

Alls I know is that they came out to reveal their next generation console. The console was almost nowhere to be found. It would be like Sega only showing the VMU when they revealed the dreamcast. Yeah a lot of us found no confusion, but when announcing a new product, everyone and their moms expect the product itself to be detailed.

Were those the same super sleuths who determined that the PS360 footage looked worse than the same PS360 footage? Regular geniuses there.

:lol. Announcing a new console without announcing a new console is a pretty big mistake, mang. People shouldn't be waiting for post-conference spreadsheets, and media reports to be clear on something like that.

Over a year out? You crazy.

Only with Nintendo's help. If left on their own, they won't even try.

They sold a million copies of a mediocre game at launch, but the low quality killed the sales of the "franchise", I would assume that they will try harder with Killer Freaks.

E3 was a mess I only work out it was a next gen seeing zelda they should have had more next gen looking demos and a close up of Wii U

anyway i hope next E3 they have a big showing and 3rd party showing im not talking about EA and they need Wii U only games they cant just be PS360 games

They said that there would be a new console shown right at the start of the conference. They just made the mistake of assuming that people aren't idiots. After the Zelda demo, the bird demo, and the third-party reel, only brainless morons who will probably die due to running into a bus someday would still think that it's not a new console (though I guess some might have assumed the Zelda part to be concept CG).

If it turns out to be good, it'll be ported to PS3 and 360. Otherwise, it'll be shit.

When I watched the reel in real time, I started thinking the rumors were wrong and it was just an add on. They were just showing a bunch of stuff that looked like Wii games. You could see the Wii U in the background, but with the small shitty feed I had, it looked just like a Wii. Only when they showed Zelda at the end did I realize it was indeed a new console.

I'm sorry, but anyone who couldn't figure out that it was a new, next generation console from what we were shown must be stupid.

A brand new controller, lots of next gen talk, focusing on different objectives this time around, showing the new console itself, a huge graphical improvement through the demos etc. etc. They even said a new console was being announced at the start of the conference for later on in the show.

It's beyond me how anyone got mixed up.

Ah well, next year they'll make it clear. Possibly a redesign to differentiate it form the Wii, a solid showing from Nintendo's first party titles, and lots of 3rd party support + details on launch, online and pricing.

The fact that games will look better won't stop people from being confused. The problem existed with the 3ds, cause it had the sam design, name and logo than the nds.

It's actually worse with the WiiU, and the name especially. Super Wii, for exemple, would mean it's something above wii. WiiU sounds like it's something FOR the wii...

This is true, I hope they change the name, but I just know they wont :/

Well EXCUUUUUUSE me Graphics McTrailerExpert if some of us were a little slow on picking up that the thing in that one video wasn't just a Wii off its diet, or that the tablet wasn't the actual console and the box was just a disc feeder, or whatever other crazy ideas people had.

I still say that announcing a new console without explicitly saying "HERE IS THE PROTOTYPE OF OUR NEW CONSOLE TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND THE TABLET CONTROLLER" is more than a "small mistake."

Wasn't that reel made up of PS3 and 360 games? How could you think they looked like Wii games??

Hahaha LOL

so the PS360 games reel now looked like a bunch of Wii games!?
that's great. I guess we can add your name to the list along with everyone else from that one thread right after the reveal that claimed the same thing.

Nintendo definitely caused the confusion, even though some that were confused should have known better. There are two things Nintendo could have done in their press conference that could have eliminated a lot of problems.

1. At least show the console for about 20-30 seconds for photos. That kills any ideas that the Controller was a Wii add-on.

2. Show game logos in the sizzle reel instead of gameplay. This way people don't go thinking that PS360 games look worse than PS360 games and you still let people know what games to expect down the road. But hindsight is 20/20.

They definitely should have shown the console a bit, Iwata could have held it for a moment and just said "This is WiiU" and then moved on to the demo real.

Though as far as the reel goes. If they hadn't shown footage of the games the same people would have said "The reason they didn't shown footage was because the games will look worse than 360/PS3 games". Lets face it there's a reason these people claimed the PS3/360 footage used looked worse than PS3/360 games, because they're raving Sony/MS fanboys. It was sort of weird to use PS3/360 footage, but it was a novel way of exposing some peoples bias at least :)

Nintendo probably should have made it more clear, but there were definitely people on the internet and in the press that knew better and wrote things about how it was just a new accessory.

Hahaha LOL

Come on guys. He's clearly talking about Nintendo's reel, which they showed first before the 3rd parties. When you watch it, the first few minutes do indeed look fairly similar to Wii games due to the same styling (They show off NSMBWiiU, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, etc). To some people who may not be completely educated on the matter, it looks to just be upgraded versions of these games taking advantage of the new tablet.

It wasn't until the end of that video where they showed the Zelda demo (and then later, the 3rd party reel) where we can see that it's a new, more powerful console.

The actual confusion over Nintendo's press conference was only momentary. The expectation going in was for a new console and Iwata and Reggie referred to it as a new system multiple times before they showed anything. Even though Reggie had just introduced the name WiiU for the "new Nintendo system" and then introduced the controller with "this is the new controller for WiiU", the only place where any confusion could come in at the very beginning of the controller demo trailer when what appeared to be NSMBW was shown but there should have been no doubt left by the end of that trailer. The confusion was exacerbated by viral FUD and the truly ignorant just repeating the FUD. The discussion about the confusion far outlasted the actual confusion. There is really no reason to bring it up today other than to stroke one's ego when claiming Nintendo needs to do what you think it needs to do.

And yeah, the WiiU would best be served with a different name. I mean, look at the 3DS. People are still asking me when they see me playing it if they can play 3DS games on their regular DS.
You here that with every new system. I can remember hearing that exact same question going from the NES to the SNES, SNES to N64, PS1 to PS2 to PS3, etc... and EVEN PS1 to Gamecube. It's not a adequate measurement of public understanding. Some people are just stupid.

It was definitely a poor presentation for a new console (although the videos of people actually playing it did a great job of getting the concept of the controller across). However, to the people who complained about the PS360 games or "Wii-looking" games, did you miss the Zelda portion? That's clearly not a Wii game.

The product IS the controller.
last time I checked the controller was just a new way to play games ON THE NEW PRODUCT. Which is the Wii-U console itself. I get their point, the box is just the box, it will have specs and be in your living room and whatnot, but it's not important. I see what reggie was getting at. Doesn't mean it didn't totally backfire, which it did.

Admittedly it's been a little more difficult with Nintendo consoles. GBA and GBA SP play the same games but have different names; you have DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL; hell, even Gameboy and Gameboy Color, if it werent for the minor palette difference. It's great that there's a name that people can instantly relate to, but I'm not surprised that there's confusion.

The "presentation" was made because the new console was leaked very early from websites like 4chan. Of course, Nintendo was not ready. They had to do it for the investors. They probably freaked out when it was revealed. Nintendo wanted them to calm down.

I had more informations from the leaks than the presentation itself. Nintendo probably put more pressure on 3rd party to not leak anything else after E3. Nintendo didn't really mention the streaming feature between the controller and the console.

In 2012, it will be totally different. We don't know maybe Nintendo could have the name of the console. The controller could be different.

You couldn't tell the difference between graphics? I mean, Really? The resolution didn't give it away? The lighting, the models...? Anything?
Let me get you two examples:

I accept the fact some people may have seen the new controller as a peripheral or add on of some sort, but when they start talking about new games and EA's support behind the 'new console', plus the demos they showed...

Yes exactly.

I dont think anyone defending the presentation does not understand the initial confusion that some people had. But to call it botched, is going a bit far. Because by the end of the presentation, by the end of day, by the end of E3, it was clear that Nintendo was launching a new console in 2012 called the WiiU with a touch screen controller.

Regarding the rumors...

Clearly the tablet controller was mentioned, which gave rumors credibility when the WiiU was revealed, but, how did the leaks screw up the fact that the system could only handle one controller, and that it could do more than stream?

No, botched is the perfect word for it. The console unveil was completely botched.

Just because everyone knew by the end of the presentation that Nintendo was launching a new console doesn't make it a raving success. That presentation was so poorly thought out that they not only confused people, but they failed to drum up any hype outside of their core userbase, regain confidence from investors, or demonstrate that they had any sort of plan or cohesive roadmap for transitioning into next-gen HD development. That unveiling was an absolute mess on all fronts.

Never before has a console unveiling at E3 been met with such general "???"...

No, botched is the perfect word for it. The console unveil was completely botched.

Yeah, to me an unveiling should equal hype. People need to come out of it going - WOAH, can't wait! That definitely didn't happen. They showed Wii styled games, didn't talk about the console, and used PS60 footage.

I personally consider the unveiling a complete and utter failure. On the show floor things were a little better because it was obvious what it was, and we got to see hints as to what types of gameplay the controller can create, but the presentation itself - bogus.

I don't think Super Wii would cut it now. Atleast Wii U sounds like Wii 2.

Yes exactly.

I dont think anyone defending the presentation does not understand the initial confusion that some people had. But to call it botched, is going a bit far.

Nintendo is the sole cause of that confusion, though. If they had ordered the reveal as they did with the Wii (show the console, give some vague details on its features (E3 2005), show the controller and examples of how it can be used (TGS 2005)) there would have been much less misunderstanding. Hell, even I didn't see the Wii U sitting under the TV and I have a pretty good eye for details like that. I know they wanted to emphasize the controller, but they did it in a weird fashion.

"Botched"? Maybe not. But it could have been handled a lot better. You shouldn't have to wait until after the conference to fully understand their plans. That's what the conference is for.

Wii U is not going to be confused with the Wii. Seems people are selective on how they choose to apply this. "OMG they named it after the Wii, so dumb, didn't they learn from 3DS???"

Uh what about Playstation 3? What about XBox 360? They aren't confused with similar names, so the name itself isn't the problem. The reason why 3DS has problems is because first, the DS was still selling and is still selling. Second, there are three different versions of the DS on the market, so this is the fourth.

There will be no confusion with the Wii, because the Wii is already in budget decline mode. And another year away? The original Wii will be an afterthought. It won't be a problem.

Of course that WiiU won't be confused with Wii. It will cost (rumored) 3 times more. People will clearly see the difference between 150€ and 450€.
