Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

You couldn't tell the difference between graphics? I mean, Really? The resolution didn't give it away? The lighting, the models...? Anything?
Let me get you two examples:

I accept the fact some people may have seen the new controller as a peripheral or add on of some sort, but when they start talking about new games and EA's support behind the 'new console', plus the demos they showed...

Pfft, like anyone had time to study lighting, models and resolution during the mass confusion that was the Wii U unveiling. I was too busy trying to make sense of the conference to actually watch the conference.

In any case, I can firmly state that as of December 7th, 2011, I know that the Wii U is an actual new Nintendo console, and the tablet thingy is the controller....I think....
:P

I'm still hoping for a new name and a redesign when it is next shown, but who knows eh?

I do think Nintendo would've listened to complaints, especially given how "bad" they're doing right now.

I hope the rumor of the 8 GB flash is in reality a super fast flash chip reserved as a scratch disk. This would allow truly huge textures to be loaded in and used as necessary. Pfff :(

Why wouldn't it?
uhhh because of the downward trend it has been having (minus the big discount sale period of black friday).

Usually when you keep a brand name it's because of the huge momentum it has and you don't want it to die. I'd say the Wii's momentum hasn't died, but it's considerably slowed, who knows a year from now.... Not saying they are wrong or right, just saying it's interesting that they think the Wii has reached that level.

Consoles always experience a downward trend at the end of a generation though. It's hard to quantify momentum so I'm not sure where to go with that.

me neither. Just saying it's interesting that they're so confident in assuming that it does have that huge momentum enough to carry the brand name.

NMH was Suda51's highest selling game actually. The Wii version anyway.

The original point to that comment was that it still sold like shit. Suda games sell like shit. Doesn't matter how amazing they may or may not be. They sell like shit. Granted, NMH apparently sold well enough to warrant a sequel (that also sold like shit) and in turn released an uprez port that sold even shittier.

Long story short. His games sell like shit... How did that Suda/Mikami title sell?

To quote Raiden from KOF: "Hey, bomba!"

Alright. I guess I don't see why they would abandon it. Though I'm not sure why they abandoned the nintendo entertainment system name either. Nintendo shrouded in confusing mystery.

I think the real point is that NMH sold better than any previous Suda51 game, thus earning it a port to a different system. Not Suda's fault if PS3 gamers don't like mature games.

Nintendo probably should have made it more clear, but there were definitely people on the internet and in the press that knew better and wrote things about how it was just a new accessory.

This was pretty much my exact feeling on the subject.

I'm right now rewatching the unveiling video.

Just paying a little attention, I notice that Reggie mentions that it's a system, and then uses language that states that the new controller was for the new system. It's not confusing at all.

The trailer on the other hand does nothing to specify that it's a new system except that you can see the new system in the background, but it's possible to confuse the system with the Wii as it has a very similar profile.

I guess if you only watched the trailer, or weren't paying very much attention to Reggie, it could have been missed, but I always assumed that the people who should have known better were being obtuse on purpose.

Uh what about Playstation 3? What about XBox 360? They aren't confused with similar names, so the name itself isn't the problem. The reason why 3DS has problems is because first, the DS was still selling and is still selling. Second, there are three different versions of the DS on the market, so this is the fourth.
There's another reason.

Nintendo makes constant revisions to their hardware on the handheld front (like DS, DS Lite, DS XL and the like) so no wonder the average DS owner got confused with the 3DS.

On the home console arena they don't act like that.

But it's true that Nintendo screwed up last E3 with Wii U's unveiling and I have no problem believing the Average Joe was confused as fuck.

They need to make clear what the Wii U is next E3 but Nintendo already knows that.

I'm hoping for a new name and the loss of circle-pads.
After the 3DS being confused with DS fiasco, a name change isn't impossible imo.

Sticks would probably be too awkward with the size of the controller. The Circle Pad Pro apparently has a clickable pad so it's possible Wii U's will too. Plus, the Wii U pads were said to feel much better than the 3DS ones already.

man, I've really liked nintendo's stage the last few E3s. They've had some pretty slick displays

as far as the reveal is concerned, their biggest misstep, apart from outright saying "new console," was that they showed what looked to be NSMBWii and Wii sports as the first types of games that might use it...the demo reel footage all looked like it was running off a Wii until the last sparse seconds with zelda footage, and that was over in the blink of an eye.

Sony should really stop using the Playstation name. It's really lost a lot of momentum since the Playstation 2 days.

Terrible example and you know it. The psx sold like gangbusters and then the ps2 topped that even more with somehow more ridiculous numbers. 2 generations of unprecedented momentum earns the branding.

I know that Nintendo is trying to do the same with the wii and alls I'm saying is that it's interesting they think the brand can do it.

Edit: also analogs definitely aren't clickable that we know of. The only rumor is that he wii-u now includes real triggers.

It sold incredibly well and to an audience that now associates "Wii" with gaming.

Here in France, Wii is everywhere in christmas mall shopping list. Not in specialized stores but in the general (think walkmart) kind of store. The Just Dance 2 + New model is sold a lot (it helps that you get free 50E coupon with it). Now, the Wii is some kind of mass market gaming icon, this has nothing in common (even if the lineup of the year seems so) with Gamecube in 2005 which was almost dead. Of course those people do not spend time on GAF.

Of course those people do not spend time on GAF.

Exactly. People confuse GAF opinion for general opinion.

Something I think GAF (and people on large internet forums) forget a lot:
We do not matter - we are tiny compared to the size of the industry as a whole. GAF is pretty large, but every single registered member could stop buying games today and the industry, as a whole, would barely notice.

No one is confusing had with the mainstream or casual market. There is one rule that remains constant when it comes to that market. They are fickle beings. Just because they were around for one thing doesn't mean they stick around for the long run. And all I was saying that I find it interesting that Nintendo thinks the wii branding is enough to put their future on. And hey I'd it ends up being as successful as the wii it will be interesting to see if they stick with wii-____for future consoles beyond the next.

Interesting is all. I personally don't buy it just yet. But time will tell.

Not surprising at all.

GB->GBC->GBA

NES->SNES

DS->3DS

Care to supply some actual data? I recall that Wii game attach rater were pretty damn similar to PS3/360 so I don't know what you're going on about.

V2 and V4 have different amounts of ram. V2W and V4W are 3rd gen kits with updates but the same amounts of ram.

Now that is interesting, since Ilherre said before that the RAM quantity has not changed since E3 and that it had a minimum of 1GB... (1.5GB minimum now?)

well I don't think there's an actual credible source out there that talks about nintendo testing multiple kits at varying amounts of ram...right?

Nintendo !

1080p - 60 FPS - AAA - medium tessellation - consumer friendly price - virtual console - all 3rd party blockbusters - DD service - breathtaking Mario, Zelda, Metroid - new IPs

Thanks.

F-Zero 1080p 60fps...think about it.

...if the hardware's good enough

Fuck man, I'd buy two WiiUs if they put out a 60FPS HD F-Zero with modern racing game functionality.

WoW at YT comments.

Nintendo has much to prove this time. Nintendo! Wii, grew up. Mii and my friends are not interested in U, outside of our fond memories of Zelda and Mario. Wii, want U, to evolve. Most of Wii, have HD televisions now. Developers also have better tools too. Can WiiU met the future, or do we move on, without U? Wii are living in hard times now. Wii will not spend a couple of hundred dollars, just to play the next Mario and Zelda. Nor will we accept, a last gen system, w/ old games. Wii have spoken.
