The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Hey guys, I've been out of the PC gaming gambit for a while since mine literally exploded, but I'm just about to dig into Skyrim.

I have an i5 with a Radeon 5770 and 8gb of ram. Kinda want to visually wow myself when I start this up, so wondering what easy mods and stuff for a rusty non PC gamer like me can easily whizz onto it without a performance hit taking away any enjoyment, thanks.

See my post a few posts up. Check out the tweaks and mods in the OP and follow the geforce guide.

No idea what else you can try Sethos.

Maybe this can help (from official forums):
leave the game, open it again, go in new game, wait ultil the charriot enter in helgen, pause and try to load the previus files

Just started. Does the writing and voice acting get better after the tutorial? Good god this is painful to listen to.

EDIT: Oops wrong thread.

Not sure how useful a geforce guide will be for me Radeon, but I guess what I was asking was how much of a performance hit certain mods and stuff add, given that my PC isn't beastly in much respect so only want to pick and choose a few rather than bog it down in 10 mods from the start...

Just follow the ini tweaks :) They'll work for anyone.

The mods shouldn't affect your game too much. The big texture mods (like hd landscapes) might take some vram up but you should be fine. The shadow tweaks will give you the biggest hit.

I wouldn't worry though. The game won't run any slower (or minimally).

I would definitely get mods 2-9. They shouldn't affect performance and are pretty important. Plus the faster horses

Ah I forgot to set bFloatPointRenderTarget to 1 so SSAO wasn't working. Even after I got it working right it looks real bizzare. It's like nuclear bright, the colors are all jacked up, framerate is awful, I get some weird issue when I look at the sun, and it crashed when I tried to wait for nighttime.

Yeah that was my initial problem too. I tried the 2nd config after that, which IS better, but still pretty nauseating. And strangely it looks nothing like the version I saw him demoing on YT.

ENB doesn't look very good, it's not bad for a early beta release but not only it looks WAY too bright (the preset bloom is off the charts, I saw a staff in the loading screen and it looked almost completely white) but it also makes the game look way too cartoony, not that it is a fundamentally bad thing, different strokes for different folks and all but it simply doesn't mix well with the setting, also I lost the green effect on the Whirlwind Sprint Shout. Seeing how awesome does the GTA IV and DX: HM ENB series look this still has a looong way to go.

Starting out again, this time I want to be all modded up from the get-go, maybe I'll get a different experience this time around. This is what I have so far, any other recommendations that has a decent impact on the game? Especially atmosphere.

Installed FXAA Injector manually.

Ok, I can't get ANY mods to work through Nexus Mod Manager. My Skyrim version is updated to 1.3. I'm running Win 7 x64. It's like the mods don't even activate and yes, I have tried running the program as administrator.

Any reason why the mods aren't working? I have the same problem with Skyrim Mod Organiser too.

Data>textures>clutter?

Something like that.

If it's an ESP, it should be in the Data folder. Open Skyrim then click Data Files and make sure they're checked.

Ok, the DATA FILES option is greyed out when I run the Skyrim launcher. Why?

From the nexus forums:

Change this:
[Launcher]
bShowAllResolutions=0
uLastAspectRatio=2

To this:
[Launcher]
bShowAllResolutions=0
uLastAspectRatio=2
bEnableFileSelection=1

In Skyrimprefs.ini

Dammit, apparently the meltdown mod isn't 1.3 compatible. Thought I was finally going to have some fun with picking up junk and melting it down, instead of barrel rummaging for a ingot here and a leather stripe there.

I got a new laptop yesterday, ASUS G74SX, and surprisingly the game runs like crap most of the times. I'm in a closed section (
The Ratway Vaults
) and the game dips to 18 sometimes, and the framerate always hover around 30. I only installed the 4GB mod and done the GeForce tweaks. In addition to that, I noticed that when I talk to a character, I almost can't hear their voice. I have to turn the analog a little so that I can hear them. Very very annoying. (did the sound tweak in the OP, didn't fix this) EDIT: sound is butchered evrywhere: when I unsheathe, there is no sound at all. No sound for arrows getting charged, nor spells when you choose them, nor horse riding, etc etc. EDIT #2: Appears to be a headphones issue. Without them the sound is perfect. Weird.

Note: I transferred my save from the 360 using Modio. I hope that's not the source of all this, as I really don't wanna restart my 80-hours journey. :(

i7 2670QM 2.2, 16 GB RAM, GTX 560M 3GB, SSD.

Forgive my ignorance; any help will be greatly appreciated. I got this mainly for Skyrim and I'm not pleased. >_<

Yeah, sorry dude, but why would you play it on a laptop, Asus of all things...

Huh. That's funny, i'm using a much shittier Asus with a GT240 in it and my game's running fine at high.

Try Tytanis.

Pretty much the same thing. I think.

Yeah, I didn't mean to say you should get one, but it just eludes me, unless you're travelling at least 1/3 of your time, a gameing laptop makes little sense. Also, worse at that, I hate Asus :)

I work 10 hours a day and I'm permitted to play Skyrim there, in addition of owning an iMac therefore I'm in no need of a desktop. I'm just puzzled because the game should be running fine with these specs. Tried it on Ultra and High, plus tried both 1080 and 720, and all perform the same. I don't get it.

Seems like it..

Anyone manage to get an FOV change to stay? I tried adding stuff to the ini but it doesn't work and I get a strange red tint.

So how do you smelt items? Got some various weapons I picked up, no smelt options at the forge?

Peronal experience, with laptops, raw specs != in-game performance. I went that way once and it was a waste of money. Maybe I should've taken better care of what I bought, but hey... But I understand your individual desires of not getting a desktop.

iMac, why would you have that? <--- just kidding :)

Haven't actually tried.

Maybe you have to be a certain level? Sure it's enabled?

Very sure. Can see all the new items and such, no option to smelt, just like the other mod ( Which is just a part of the Tytanis compilation I believe ).
