Thanks. What kind of productivity apps are you referring to? Any specific suggestions?

I don't use my iPad for work, at all. It's just a web browsing / email / iOS game machine for at home
Well anything you might be interested in or use normally, could be anything.

If you need access to your computer for whatever reasons there's remote desktop and SSH apps along with a few network file browsers.

Screwing around with the various music stuff can be fun, Tap DJ (an iPhone app) is cheap and can potentially be hilarious if you just record random conversation with it (there's also djay which has better quality sound but doesn't seem to have mic recording). The Korg apps are all pretty nice, if confusing to get into (figuring them out is kind of a game in itself), there's a bunch of other stuff like that out there.

I use SketchBook Pro for drawing and more recently got TouchDraw to mess with vector drawing.

Back to games, King of Dragon Pass is kind of wacky and pretty awesome if you can get into it. It's iPhone right now but there's a universal iPad update in the works, and it's on sale currently. If you like puzzle stuff, SpellTower and Async Corp are nice (latter is iPhone only but it doesn't really matter).

Hi all, looking for a good reputable english/spanish dictionary for the ipad. Is an app better than say, an ebook version? Would appreciate any thoughts/experiences.

Just bought a 32Gig Wifi. Question, how many of you that bought it at Best Buy purchased their one year warranty? It's $120 or so and I'm not sure if it's worth it. My 4 year old daughter will be using it at times and although she is very good with electronics she is still 4. I bought a case for it and am thinking of buying invisishield as well.

This is awesome, FINALLY the perfect stylus for the iPad; http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1225098940/ipen-the-first-active-stylus-for-ipad

Seriously, it's so good. The best part is the palm rejection. Other stylussss are impossible to use comfortably imo due to no palm rest. Only problem with this is if it works JUST with their app, and not Sketch pro etc.

The manufacturers are working with developers to add supoort for the pen in other apps. I've seen conflicting reports of the quality of the SDK but it looks good.

The pen tech has been doing the tech show circuit for the past couple of months:

I dont think it's available for general sale yet but units show up on ebay occasionally and i think one import site might have it. The $50 early bird price for the iPen is the cheapest I've seen it so far—glad I got in on that even though I don't have an iPad at the moment.

I hope it takes off, I kind of wish Apple would just release an official accessory for use with drawing/note taking style apps... not everything is finger-perfect.

I had the same concern when I picked up our 16GB wifi iPad 2 at BB, and I didn't get the warranty. But I did get the invisishield and the Targus 360 leather case. I highly recommend both.

So far everything has held up great, even with extensive use from my 3yr old. She uses the iPad like a pro.

EDIT: there is a small scratch on the invisishield now though. So glad I bought it :)

Warranty is not worth it imo. The iPad is $600 and the warranty is $120 so basically your are paying 20% of the cost for a warranty which even if you use, you would likely receive a refurb. Save the cash the iPad will be fine.

Look at it this way. The iPad is probably a device you'll be wanting to replace after a year anyway. And it has such a good resale value. So when the next one comes alone, sell the first one to someone else and you get an all new warranty and they get a cheaper iPad. Just buy yourself a nice case. Hopefully the design and button locations will remain the same for a while so some cases can be reused.

uh, no. That's extremely wasteful.

I might pick up an iPad 3 next year since I might be using it for my job. But I won't be getting rid of our perfectly fine iPad 2.

It would be great as a digital sketchbook.

Apple needs to make this happen, but I don't think it ever will sadly.

Well, if they release an iPad (prob. 4/5) that has depth/pressure sensitivity, it would have to become a reality. Basically they'd be able to take over the wacom tablet field instantly.

All they'd need is an official accessory, iPen or whatever.

Okay so I'm new to the whole apple thing and need a little advice, for Christmas I got my mom and grandma age 60/85 two iPad2's and my little brother age 9 an iPod Touch, so Apple's iTune account, what would be the best way to set this up? Should I make 3 individual accounts or set up a sort of family account or some such and let all 3 devices sit under one account. I guess I'm just a little confused on how purchases will work with 3 different people, not all under the same house, each having different tastes on what they do with the devices.

well, if it’s all on one account and tree’s a credit or some account credit (from a iTunes gift card) on the shared account, then that shared pool of funds is available for all three users.

you’d probably need to turn on parental controls on the 9 year old’s iPod to not allow for app store purchases without a parent to input a password to OK it.

one apple ID also means they will share the same bookmarks, mail, contacts, etc if you use the default iCloud settings.

honestly, I think it’s better to have separate accounts for all three devices since these things have personal info on them that are tied to the apple id.

When do the next iPad updates come?

Ehhh now that I think about it you're right. I guess I didn't get a warranty when I got it haha. I should probably go ahead and get the second year...
FAQ says you can buy it within the 1 year limited warranty for 79.99.

It was pretty easy to sell my original iPad for $400 after the iPad 2 came out. You have to keep it in like new condition though. That was my "new warranty".

That's good. My grandm's looking to get one to browse the internet and such in the recliner.

It'd never leave the house pretty much.

hey guys, i just got an 32gb ipad2 wifi+3g.

does the 3g work the same as my phone's 3g plan? if so, i have a grandfathered unlimited data plan with my att phone, can i apply that to my ipad?

or does the ipad require a separate data plan?

sorry, i havent gotten home yet so i havent even opened up my ipad to play with it yet

edit:

i have no experience getting movies onto the ipad. i have a bunch of blu-ray/dvd/digital copies of movies that i'd like to add to my ipad. is this a painful process?

Kind of. Use a program like RipIt or Handbreak to rip the contents of the disc into a mp4 file, this usually takes an hour or two depending on your computer. Then drag and drop the files into iTunes. Done!

If you already have compatible movie files you just put them in iTunes, where you can add a custom cover/poster image/year/description etc. But yeah, it's kind of a pain in the ass.

Are there alternatives to the standard iOS keyboard? I'm coming off using a Touchpad which had a much a better keyboard (numbers on top, easier access to symbols) and I really miss that functionality.

Apple are picky about keyboard alteration, and don't allow Apps to be published if they change the keyboard drastically. Some Apps add functionality though - like IA Writer by giving new buttons atop the main keyboard. Nothing will completly change the layout over all Apps though

Don't forget you can hold down certain keys on the keyboard to bring up different letters/symbols though, that might help.

So a follow up to my previous question above, the idea was having 1 account for all 3 was so that if say my mom found an interesting book or app that my grandma would also like they could share it without both having to buy the same thing, if they each have different accounts are they still able to share things between their iPads? Same idea if my brother likes a game on his iPod he could also play it on the iPad without double dipping.

no.

well, yes, but you need to sign into the other device with the account that originally bought the app, then download it again for free, then sign back in with the first account. it’s a pain.

and you can’t get updates to that app without providing the password of the account that bought it.

basically, the system you’re thinking of has different drawbacks with one account or multiple accounts. just gotta figure out which drawbacks are acceptable and go from there.

It's a bad idea, since they would also all share contacts, email, bookmarks, and every other bit of personal data. Those accounts are meant to be individual.

Not really. You could use the same account only for iTunes (i.e. app store/apps downloaded) then different ones for iCloud/iMessage etc, no?

That doesn't sound so bad if all that needs to be done is to log into each other accounts when something wants to be shared. Just to be clear, account 1 wants something from account 2. so log into account 2 to download it, then switch back and it's useable on account 1? Are there any other limitations to sharing of this matter besides the update thing, limits perhaps?

Oh and it is possible to make my brothers account not be able to buy things with a click of a button, my credit card + 9 year old... yeah right lol.

You should know better.
You can log in and out of the AppStore as you like. My sister and me use different iCloud IDs but share an AppStore account.

@Im_special: every purchase needs a password. Don't fret.

Maybe this is a better place to ask. Why is it not possible to install Android or WebOS on an iPad? What's the technical explanation? I know about the Android port for the iPhone 3G, but that's it?

Fair enough. I wouldn't want anyone sharing my account and using my credit card, but whatever floats your boat.

Well my family is really close and all responsible people I'm not worried that everything will be under one card, just that I don't want to buy everything 2 or 3 times for the same exact thing, so now I'm thinking maybe have 3 different personal accounts for each device then set up another account for all purchases, then all 3 can use that account to access things. Does this sound like the way to go, or am I missing something? This also seems like it can become a pain with account juggling.

No but if you pull the g and h keys apart you get the crazy trippy 2thumb keyboard.

Okay I just need confirmation that it's possible to share bought apps/music/books whatever from a different account that bought it, just as long as you log into the account that bought it to download them. Would like to know before I bought a few things to an account that isn't really anyone's lol.

Can anyone please recommend a really good value for money iPad 2 case? Not too fussed on the 'peek' part to be honest, just want something to keep it safe in case I drop it, and also keep surfaces I put it on safe from scratches!

Thanks :)

It's possible but there's too much low level driver work to do it since there is literally one source for the things needed to get the hardware to run.
