Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

After (sort of late SR3 spoilers)
falling out of a plane in a tank while shooting other tanks and jets and landing (safely, I should add) to find that there has been a zombie outbreak then getting tasked by Mayor Burt Reynolds to eliminate the zombies. Then, having done so I was given the option to either have a mob of zombie homies or the ability to call Burt Reynolds in to combat any time
was the point at which mind was blown into a state beyond repair.

SR3 changed my life.

You forgot
where you punch the wing off a fucking plane.
There's so much crazy in the later half of the game that I can't comprehend how anybody would say it never gets higher than the first few hours. The section after the first missions is a little slow
beyond the Taken mission and nude Oleg
but outside of the forced activity missions I can't see how it drags, and even then that's only if you don't enjoy those.

I just enjoyed messing about the city in Saints Row. I loved causing chaos, running into a building I owned, and then running back out to cause it again.

It's destruction on a large scale with little consequence.

I'd like to know how much Patrick played of RE 4 HD to come to his opinion that it was a poor remake/HD update. Kind of reminds me of all the fud there was around launch about it being based on the PS2 version. Apart from a few poor textures, the 360 version I played was a fantastic experience and I was happy to pay the "high price" of $20 for considering I got 40 hours of entertainment from playing it on Normal, Professional, Separate Ways and The Mercenaries.

Ico/SoTC is a deserved winner of the category, though.

I didn't find RE4 HD update to be poor, just... adequate. There were some really weird sound mixing/quality issues, and no extra additions to speak of. You can either call this 'faithful' or 'bare bones,' and I tend to lean towards the latter. Specifically because of the limited control options. Presumably, one function of the HD update was a way for fans of RE5 who had not previously played RE4 to experience it. In this regard, the omission of control schemes similar to RE5, was a huge oversight. Even as someone who played RE4 back in 2005, I found it hard to go back.

Someone's gooootta explain how The Maltese Falcon is even the tiniest bit like the part in LA Noire where you watch a video of all the bad guys in the game talking about their evil plan to be bad guys. Is Ryan confusing macguffins with deus ex machinas? I honestly can't comprehend their love for LA Noire, and I wanted to love that game so much. I keep coming back to it hoping it won't be shitty but it's shitty every time! Patrick brings up so many good points and Ryan just says "Eh, that's just noir". NO IT ISN'T, IT'S JUST SHITTINESS!

I'm just choking on my stupid internet rage here. Everyone's opinion sucks but mine!

I love noir but I also don't understand their love for this game. They praise the tech and some of the plot elements but they never talk about actually playing the thing, and in my opinion that's where the game breaks down because I think the conversation stuff is broken (Patrick even mentioned that the option choices were different when the dialogue was recorded).

I really wish Jeff played this game because I don't think it would've gotten away with all the praise it got.

Yeah, there's a handful of cool missions over the span of like 6 hours.

Not good enough.

If SR4 has the same quality of missions like the first three hours of SR3 I would be calling it one of my favourite games. As it stands, SR3 is not because they drop the ball.

Assuming we see the same sort of transition from SR1->SR2 when we go from SR3->SR4, the story mission progression quality should improve greatly. Volition had less people and time to make this one, and it shows considering how much time was likely needed on just city building as opposed to sprucing up and filling out an existing city.

I still prefer SR2 overall in terms of how the story missions progressed, but SR3 is better gameplay wise and has much bigger peaks in terms of crazy.

You mean aiming with the right stick I take it. Because there was an option to hold LT to aim and RT to fire that was just like one of the RE 5 control schemes.

I used the left stick to aim in RE 5 so I had no issue doing the same in RE 4 HD.

Well I can only expect that Brad once again held way too much sway, because that certainly wasn't the GB game of the year when you consider that Ryan, Jeff, and Vinny all picked the same game on their personal lists, and that didn't win for the site. Instead we get the "safe" pick. I'm pretty disappointed. Neither game is my personal GotY and I loved both as well, but it saddens me to see the site playing it safe. I'll have to listen to the podcast when it goes up to see if I'm off the mark here at all but I somehow doubt it.

Man, those top 10 & day 5-recap vids were absolutely great. Just amazing work all-around for all of the GOTY stuff this year.

Pretty much my feeling, if I listen to the podcast and it ends up being another "Brad is so stubborn that the rest of the crew just doesn't want to put up with it anymore" thing I will be pretty bummed out.

depends whether you class GOTY as your personal favourite or a game that defined the year.

And
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim may be a safe choice, but it's a fucking excellent game, and totally deserves it. Saints Row probably could have deserved to win it as well, though I wouldn't agree.

I was already annoyed with how they managed to put a bit character from Noir that nobody gave a shit about (nobody could even remember his name) over Rucks or any of the Saints Row cast because of Brad. I really didn't like Skyrim (where I felt like I saw everything in the first 10 hours despite there being so much content in the game) and add to that the fact I had to stop playing with a patch that broke the game, I can't help but be disappointed by the pick.

Yeah, once I listen to the podcast I will hopefully get a better idea of the reasoning but as it stands right now I just don't like the pick.

Kasavin's top 10 is the best yet, I think, though I've never played the #1 choice.

Yeah, its grabs from a wider range than most of the lists. Also Jaffe plays too many dumb games lol, he deserves better.

It doesn't surprise me the way they show off their top ten is the best part of Giant Bomb's GotY stuff. Great/fun personality, unappealing common range/depth of criticism.

No one game should or can "define the year". What an insult that would be to all the arcade-style action games and intricate strategy games that would be.

Well, going by the comments I know what won now. So, Minerva's Den all over again? Oh Brad...

Meh, it's just a list guys. Enjoy the content and entertainment these guys put out even if the outcome is not what you expected. I can't think of any other site's 4 hour deliberation I'd rather listen to, to be honest.

Their GotY will definitely make for an interesting podcast. That's for sure.

Four hours is too much, though. It'll be difficult to listen to all that, especially with the new 8-4 episode out, too. sigh

I'd argue that it should be a bit of both. If an arcade style game managed to spark such discussion amongst the gaming community and be totally awesome it should deserve game of the year as well.

I am legitimately surprised at number one.

Also, that top ten video... Oh man. OH MAN.
Vinny, you really outdid yourself. Excellent stuff all around from everyone. : )

Yeah, I just really figured they'd give it to SR3, as much as everyone seemed to love it. I thought Skyrim for sure before the videos/lists, but after yesterday, I was convinced it would be SR3.

The opinions of game journos don't stray too far from each other, always bet on the popular choice.
