Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

Wasn't Bayonetta disqualified from discussion last year just because the PS3 version was bad? Skyrim PS3 is way worse than Bayonetta PS3 ever was.

Am I remembering wrong? I could have just read it somewhere and confused it with being a memory.

One side was fucked over, but it doesn't make it any less of a great game for those who can play it. It's not like these awards are meant to justify it for PS3 owners, nor is it supposed to detract sales from the other two platforms it works in.

Holy shit, that was some intense podcast. So fucking gooooooood!

My favorite lines:

Tech demos are not games

This is where my Mortal Kombat argument comes to bite me in the ass. Hope you enjoy it Rayman!

I really liked Patrick
defending Rayman against Mortal Kombat
. You're a cool dude man!

Yeah it was.

I said earlier in this thread the GB guys would feel differently about Skyrim and booyah was I right. /smug

I see your point, but it's selling like hotcakes and the info is out there about PS3. As much as I love GB, I don't think they're really making much of a difference either way with what they say or do about the situation.

I kinda agree that Bethesda don't deserve to be praised for making a broken version, but I feel they do for making such awesome versions at the same time.

So... I dunno. Game of the year and fail of the year, man!

I think it's ridiculous to 'punish' Bethesda for a buggy game. The fact is that nobody is making games as complex as Bethesda makes them nowadays, and I'll take something as dense as Skyrim and make do with the bugs instead of something as linear and streamlined as 95% of games on the market today.

Really like their top 10 with the exception of LA Noire. I am really happy to see UC3 snubbed as I personally don't think it should be on any list. If they had Deus Ex over Noire it'd be perfect to me.

I'll listen to the podcast of it soon.

It's not a bug, though. Lots of PS3 versions are literally unplayable because it never goes above 10fps.

It's very much BROKEN in a lot of cases. That's why it's such a weird situation.

All of this discussion has just made me realize that I don't think Bastion is nearly as good as they say it to be.

I guess that's what opinions are for. :P

A broken PS3 version of Skyrim doesn't make the 360 or PC versions any less great. I don't see anything wrong with rightfully praising a brilliant game when a version they didn't play has problems.

LA Noire is a pretty awful game, and has no place on a top 10 list. The one thing it may have going for it, aside from freaky computer people faces, is the story, and even that was botched.

Totally shocked that Saint's Row wasn't given the top spot, and on that note listening to their deliberations this week made me pick up a copy. I'm glad they didn't pick it, cause I don't think it's really very good. Listening to them describe that game is infinitely more enjoyable than actually playing it.

Despite all this, Giantbomb put out another incredible year of GOTY content. The podcasts alone were great, but the videos are incredible. Also, Dark Souls is totally the best game of 2011.

I can definitely see that argument. It should be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Giant Bomb's 2011 Game of the Year*

*Not the PS3 version!

I'm in agreement with the critical consensus in most games, but I felt the same way about Bastion. I thought it as great, and did some really cool things with the endings, but not as incredible as people have made it out to be.

Jeff specifically mentioned that in his top 10, they just didn't expand on anything for the overall 10.

To me Bastion is the most overrated game this year. If it wasn't for the narration no one would talk about it.

Wow, I completely forgot about Dead Space 2. Hardcore mode on that probably tops Dark Souls as most fun damn single player game this year.

ok checked the top 10.

SHOCKING NEWS! I disagree with a lot of it. No uncharted or Deus ex stand out but I can guess why they are not on there.

Also I tought GB hated top 10 lists?

Yeah it was.

I said earlier in this thread the GB guys would feel differently about Skyrim and booyah was I right. /smug

well Giant bomb isnt exactly the beacon of consistent journalistic integrity.

Just look at Bastion. it wasnt ok to review... they knew that. but hey 4 months later I guess that doesnt count so they can give it loads of awards? thats how it works right?

It would have been cool if they give it to Saints Row just to be different.... plus all the bad stuff about skyrim. broken ps3 version, patches that break the game on ALL platforms. plus the general glitchyness that goes with a bethesda game. I hope they touch on those in there GOTY podcast that I will hopfully get around to something next month.

Maybe that statue bethesda sent them was really really awesome.... or stuffed full of money.

Also I think I have to watch all the other GOTY videos now. :O

also if anyone from GB is reading this... how to I get you guys to stop emailing me.

yes I know my membership is ending... yes I know my Credit card is expiring... I dont need 10 emails from you telling me about it. thanks.

Can't you hear yourself when you're elevating a game to "Well, they achieved in THIS area / The thought was good" level of adoration?

I'm sure the game, when functional, is fantastic. It looks amazing, seems absolutely huge and immersive. But bugs are part of a development process and should be taken into account, regardless of how many versions they appear in.

Not quite sure what you're saying. I don't think Skyrim is the best thing I've ever played, but I'm saying I'm willing to let some bugginess in my Xbox version slide thanks to the density of the gameplay and world.

EDIT: I think Portal 2 might be the best made game this year – it's nearly flawless in what it tries to do, in my opinion. But I think I've had more fun with Skyrim.

Blackwater is worst game of the year because its offensiveness extends way beyond the realm of being a poorly made piece of entertainment. It's offensive because it's some kind of ham fisted attempt at image rehabilitation for a business with a history of murdering people, smuggling weapons, and attempting to cover it up.

I lost count of the amount of times someone said something that made me go "but but but but but but" while everyone else on the podcast said "yeah okay"

In any case, good list.
With the exception of Bastion
I like how Dead Space is on it and how Rayman is on it, however barely Rayman managed to squeeze in.

you probably should’ve kept to your original ideal and stayed away from their content and this thread. You’re the most paranoid and negative person I’ve ever seen online.

I'm glad to see Dead Space high up on the list. I thought it might get a little overlooked this year.

Finished listening to the podcast, didn't like at all the way that #1 discussion went down. Ryan saying he doesn't like Saints Row because he has played all of it because he liked it so much, then gives a vote to Skyrim which he hasn't played at all. What the fuck.

I'm pretty sure Brad made it clear on the day 2 or 3 podcast that while a review with a score is basically purchasing advice, the awards are their own personal feelings toward the games. In fact, I think it was made clear on that podcast and one or two previously.

Wow, can't wait to listen to the podcast, was sure it'd be Saints Row 3.

So embarrassing.

ok I will let the statue thing go since they do get sent a lot of dumb stuff. The group of attractive women hand delivering the 3ds was a bit much and that didnt change there views on the 3DS any..... but I am sticking with my point on bastion.

If it wasnt ok for them to review it then it should have been left out of GOTY awards.

If jeff or brad is on and wants to tell me what changed in the last few months that there relationship with that games development hasnt changed there opinions on the game then please.... go ahead.

Or if its mentioned in any of the GOTY podcasts I will probably listen to it eventually.

edit I guess they talk about it on one of the GOTY podcasts.

Brad absolutely nails it in saying that Saint's Row is an average open world game with some insanity thrown in. The best that can be said about all the game parts of that game is that they're competent.

who would have thought Ryan would stab Saints Row 3 in the back?

plot twist indeed.

He was right though, Brad was spot on in the Skyrim/SR3 discussion. That man can argue. He was so unbelievablly wrong about Rayman though.

It's already been explained to you. Why not address the explanation?

Then what should we call the combat system in Skyrim? I also disagree that Saints Row is merely competent. Best open world gameplay I played this generation and I also enjoyed their mission design.

I think you are one those people people that Jeff said he struggles to suppress his want to kill - congrats, that happens once a year!

Yeah, skyrim is amazing in so many ways, but in overall story and combat, which for me are two huge things, I think it is just plain bad. The melee combat system is just jank, and the main story is shit.

but the open world part of SR3 just doesn't do it for me and doesn't even smack as very open worldy. In GTA I love getting into car chases and just exploring the world they created. not once did I consider doing that in SR3.
