Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

I wonder if Retro will keep using Unreal Engine on Wii U. Surprisingly enough, that's actually the engine Metroid Prime 1 - 3 ran on (heavily modified UE2), as was recently uncovered. Kinda surprising that neither the engine nor Epic was mentioned anywhere in the credits, though. And I'd guess Epic would have loved to use those games to brag, as Metroid Prime 1 was the highest rated and probably the most beautiful Unreal Engine game when it was released.

MIND = BLOWN

Then... That bird demo... like I suspected....... AH!!!!

What the fuck. Why wasn't this publicized?

It's rare, but it happens. Iwata even said as much last summer. That reminds me: Adhesive Games "vanished" in late August...

I remember him saying that they would work with other companies and expand Nintendo's abilities through 'partnerships'... Did he mention acquisitions?

He did, yes. Partnerships and acquisitions. But he also said that it's very rare to find a studio that shares Nintendo's philosophy, which is why they only buy studios every couple of years. But Iwata said something might be underway, which is why I mentioned Adhesive. I don't want to say Nintendo bought them, they most likely didn't, but a studio like Adhesive might be just what they're looking for: Newcomers, completely independent, no publisher, and considering the studio was founded by a former Offset/ Intel guy, the philosophy might be similar as well.

that would be freaky maybe I should just sneak one in with my eyes open in a few days :P

LOL. Do it.

Wii U exclusive?

Something like that would certainly help to flesh out Nintendo's portfolio. But like I wrote, that mention wasn't really serious. It's just that, from the way Iwata spoke last summer, I had the impression that they bought some studio, or were in talks with some studio, so Adhesive entering full blackout mode around that time seemed fitting. If they buy (or bought) a studio, it would almost certainly be a western developer, it has to be an indie, and it would most likely be a newcomer. That made me think, and from the talented western newcomers, Adhesive came to mind, as did Flying Wild Hog (Hard Reset). But Flying Wild Hog has a PC release scheduled for later this year, publishing deal and all, so they're out. But there are certainly several other potential studios I'm missing - if they went shopping.

@Thraktor:

The website hasn't been updated in months. On the forums, they're not talking about platforms anymore. It's the usual "we don't know, stay tuned" bullshit.

PaulGale has gotten things right in the past but has also been terribly wrong. In any case he seems to have some contacts in the industry and has written and contributed to websites and magazines but as shown by his story about Kojima's 'taboo' game he's mentally challenged at the same time.

Mentally challenged, I'm not. I assure you that! It's always a risk when reporting news, especially rumors...and that's why I typically only write what I've heard about, from a trusted source that I know. The Retro Studios story, Title Fight story, and most everything else come from people I've befriended over the last 12 years.

You know...the "Paul's Friends" section on my site represents but a small portion of the contacts I've made in this industry. Some aren't there because they don't care for cameras and some wish to remain completely private and as my friends/sources only (which is totally understandable).

In the case of Hideo Kojima's rumored title, my source in Japan told me before any other site posted it (that I know of) about his stance on Metal Gear Solid 5 back at TGS '10. It was that person's source that provided him with the information about said "taboo" title. I called it a rumor from the beginning because I did not personally know the person behind the story.

I only put it up because I trusted my friend...and you know, a source of his could potentially become valuable to me. Quite bizarre, yes...but hey that's news for ya and thanks why I called it a rumor.

And to reiterate, the next game I'll be talking about is for Wii U/3DS...not Wii/3DS. Thanks!

There really is not a mandate for Nintendo to buy any studio. I think it pleases people who like to make lists, but it really does not serve the best purpose always. The best archetype has been about owning intellectual properties. Not studios. Nintendo's best bet would be scouting some unpublished western games and scooping the rights and publishing duties. That's all Nintendo needs. To take a chance on a potential new game, put some money behind it and present it to the audience.

Iwata's talked about partnerships. Lately, it seemed directed at having "partners" develop aspects of the Wii U instead of dedicated "people who used to make games".

Hold on to your butt folks, we may get something this month, courtesy of PGN.

While he mentions that this scoop relates to the Wii and 3DS...

...his following post mentions a Wii U scoop:

I made a comment in the first article that's awaiting moderation asking to clarify this.

Yes, it's for Wii U and 3DS. :)

Bungie would be a pretty out-there acquisition/partnership, and they are technically unattached to Microsoft at this point. Zero chance of it actually happening, but what better way to attract the Halo crowd than buy the guys who made Halo?

I assume this game is brand-new, never announced prior? Also, what will your unveiling come with? Interviews? Name of the dev/publisher I'm sure. I certainly wouldn't expect media as I said before. And when do you hope to get this posted? Mid or late Jan?

Thats pretty neat. I wonder why it was never credited in the game...is it so far removed from UE2 that they didn't have to or something?

Paul Gale, give up the goods bro. We are desperate.

...but I'd get pretty screwed if I did. You know how long I sat on Street Fighter IV, knowing that it was in development? Years! I actually didn't even reveal that Street Fighter 3.5 was in consideration to be made until last year. Yeah, some things are really tight lipped. And sometimes you get permission from just one person in particular and that's all you need to write a story.

And then there's an example like Tony Hawk's Proving Ground. I had a strict NDA, embargo on that one for many months. That one was straight up company business.

In my world you've got company ties and you've got personal connections. If it's a company tie, you know there'll be an NDA behind it and you can't write a thing. If it's a personal tie, sure you "could" blab about it without any penalty, but you'd look horrible to every other source that's ever confided in you.

I only put stuff up if I get company permission/the "ok" from a friend. :)

Star Tropics by Retro confirmed!

I'm not calling the shots so I'll have to wait. Some people love hints and some wish there would be nothing until you get it all. I understand both sides of the coin, but in announcing something even small...unless I hand people a free actual copy of a game itself, 2 years in advance, I'll never please everyone.

And that's fine with me. I'm comfortable with how I do things and if more people like "something over nothing", great!

Well I can wait, so long as we get the goods, and it's hopefully this month, far better than waiting until E3 for anything. :)

I wouldn't want anyone to endanger your ties with contacts just to get an early hint.

If more people had your patience, it'd make my job a lot easier. But a little chaos now and then is needed to fuel the internet, heh.

Paul Gale Network. Apparently the topic story brags about the fact that they broke a story about "Retro Studios having Wii U development kits". Are you serious? Are you serious?

The AntMurda Network can confirm HAL has Wii U development kits as well.

Man. SIX MONTHS until E3.

It seems like forever right now. But I know that when June comes around, I'll look back at the preceding six months and wonder, "Where the hell did the time go?"

Dont know if this is the right place to ask this but do we know if Nintendo will be at GDC at all? Not even to talk about Wii U but like anyone from Nintendo having a keynote or something there?

Oh god. While iOS game porting is fine, magazines and books are going to be terrible on that cheap lo res screen. Just as shit as MP3 playing and browser on DS.

Sounds like Nintendo doesn't have a clue how to position the tablet their R&D team brought them to sell.

Yeah apps would be terrible on such a low resolution, but hey if they could make it a higher resolution somehow that would be good.

They absolutely need a higher res screen for it to double as a decent e-reader.

Kindle is 800x600, Wii U is what, 854x480? Reading you'll hold it portrait so I don't think the horizontal res difference will be too bad and the vertical will actually be better. It will be passable. Of course I won't complain if they up it :) Double the res both ways would be stellar for apps, then just pixel double for games. It would look as good as it does now for games with no scaling artifacts and apps would be super sharp. 1708x960 on a 6.2" screen would be juicy.

Let's be honest, who would actually use it as an e-reader? There's no way I'm going to be reading books on my TV or my Upad when I have better stuff lying around.

It's the other apps, including iPad like games, where it's at.
I might. I don't have a kindle and an iPad is way too heavy for reading in bed IMO. But yes, apps are way more important than books to me.
