If more people had your patience, it'd make my job a lot easier. But a little chaos now and then is needed to fuel the internet, heh.

No such thing a a little chaos when it comes to the Internet. :p

Paul, should we be worried about the Wii U's technical aspects? That's vague enough right ;) ?

Pssh. You don't need him to know you don't need to be worried. :)

D'oh! Damn public educational system!

There's a countdown clock in the OP. :)

A question for the tech-literate among us.

I read somewhere that Nintendo develops their games with high-resolution assets even though the Wii can't display them. Assuming these are on the disc, would it be possible for Wii U to play old Wii games in HD? If not, would it be feasible to allow users to download the HD assets for the games via patch or something?

No and no. The HD assets aren't on the disc (as shown by Dolphin).
They are developed with HD assets on PC dev kits, basically, then downscalled for the Wii.

Yeah it's all a balancing act between resolution, cost, bandwidth to transmit images/image quality. I imagine Nintendo will prioritise quality and frame rate over resolution.
frame rate is a non-issue. Nothing is stopping companies from making games with high fps right now. They choose not to.

I was meaning with regard to the tablet and streaming to it from the console. Nintendo I think would sacrifice resolution for it to be able to support 60fps.

This thread suddenly got a lot more awesome. From the Metroid Prime using Unreal thing (seriously, holy fucking shit), to this scoop on a Wii U/3DS game. Now it feels like the new year in gaming has kicked off for real. :lol

Yes, I'm repeating myself, I don't care...

Zelda and Skyrim must have a baby, fuck the haters. Open world Zelda all the way. Dark Crystal looks and feel...gritty but still fantastical.

F-Zero just has to happen. Nintendo, fucking do it for the core, just to show you love them.

Waverace. What a fucking gorgeous game this could be on next-gen hardware.

DQ X better have a massive graphics upgrade on the Wii-U

2D Mario game that actually uses the Wii-U's power to its fullest. Make that shit look like a goddamn Toy Story game.

Was it just me or did I hear during E3 that Super Mario would be a launch title? I can't find it being said!

I might have stayed up too late for the E3 conferences.

Some games with 2D art clearly use HD resolution assets on Wii (Rayman Origins, NSMB Wii, Kirby's Epic Yarn etc) and almost all Wii games have HD resolution HUDSs (unlike the GCN)

It's obvious that it's preparation for their inevitable future Virtual Console re-release on the hardware after Wii U (7-10 years from now)

Yeah they did and to add to it you forgot the part where they said to make a WII Centipede out of 3 of the massive controllers to play it. :)

ugh
the last thing I want is a 2D mario which looks like a CGI shitfest.
how about a true pixelart 2D mario? it's about time. fuck that 2,5D crap(well, at least SMBWii had some charme).

When I saw Wario land shake it I fantasized about a Mario game with those graphics. Not pixel graphics, but hey gorgeous 2D.

It's rare, but it happens. Iwata even said as much last summer. That reminds me: Adhesive Games "vanished" in late August...

Oh my God, I was watching these trailers for the billionth rime yesterday, and if HAWKEN was an exclusive...

Also, HI PAUL
.

Considering your position and connections in the industry, I can fully understand your caution in revealing information. I believe there are some things that wouldn't compromise your stance in all of this, however: is the game a first or third party title, for instance? How long has it been in development? Are the two versions to work together, or are they separate?

You know more than anyone how scarce info has been since E3, so any answers will be wholly appreciated!

Never the less, thanks for coming on and setting a few things straight for us. It must be very difficult operating in the position you're in!

The Hawken website still says "We are interested in bringing Hawken to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.", which would be gone by now if they were acquired by, or even being published by Nintendo.

What platform is it for?
This is unknown at this point. We are interested in bringing Hawken to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

These guys probably would not have known anything about the WiiU.
But when they saw it, that tablet controller... they were inspired.
Add to the fact that Nintendo was looking for partnerships, and in particular western developers, these guys decided to have a talk with the big N.

Nintendo saw their demos and were quite impressed by the art style and sound effects.
They especially liked the fact that this team was small, yet productive. They asked a lot of questions about online, the gameplay and gave some advice. Finally, they asked them, "Can you make three of those? We want an exclusive series for our new console. You will have a year and a half to get the first game ready for our launch. And we will show off this game on our stage during E3"

It had to have happened.

I think you're making scenarios up in your head :P

But it's not at all unlikely. It's just a bit... different.

Adhesive consider themselves as Indie developers. Now this could mean two things. either:

a) Nintendo won't do business with them and bring HAWKEN to the WiiU because this is there debut title and they are an 'inexperienced' team, or

b) Nintendo has identified their talent and has adopted them to work on the WiiU, picking them up as another western first party developer/partner, a la RETRO.

HAWKEN could easily had fallen off the radar to surface on the NEXT BOX

the uPad would be great for this game in many ways. You can use the screen when you go to cockpit view

nice dreams guys :)

I think giving a Mario title the kind of detail his character model has in Super Smash Bros. Brawl will at least be interesting.

I think we have a pretty decent chance at getting some tidbits at GDC. We'll get crumbs at CES, but we're so starved for info right now, it'll feel like a meal fit for a king.

Hmmm, I should go get some breakfast...

I like the food metaphors! And I doubt we'll get anything from CES. GDC, however... some tasty info, lots of rumours...

I think a game like Advance Wars could work really well on the Wii U. One player on the TV would be down on the battlefield and the other using the tablet could be building bases and things.

This is what I thought with Battalion Wars - using a top down map to organise and command troops and vehicles etc.

The Upad would be perfect for a tower defence game too. One player places defences on the controller in 2D birds eye view, whilst the other runs through the map in 3D, taking out the defences with their army.

It really depends if MS shows off anything at CES then we will have a war for the spotlight
If the Next Box specs are as good as the rumors say then maybe Nintendo will just stay quiet until E3 anyway

Hell it would work just as well in games like Battlefield. The return of a commander mode would work perfect with the UPad. Even squadleaders and normal soldiers would have quick access to maps, drop points, to draw Points of INterests, designate flanking positions, call out tanks, pinpoint mortar fire etc etc.

The practical uses of the UPad are limitless,

which is why I expect not a single 3rd party developer to use it at all.

Smiles and Cries said:
1024 x 600 pixel resolution at 169 ppi or 6.06" x 3.55", 16 million colors.

how much of a boost does the uPad need to match this?
Pixel density isn't far off. Based on the size you give and going with a 6.2" diagonal 16:9 screen for Wii U controller: If the Kindle Fire screen was cropped to Wii U size it would be about 912x514 whereas we're expecting Wii U pad to be 854x480.

All the rumors are so vague that the Wii U and the next Xbox could range from nearly identical to worlds apart, performance wise. And taking recent trends into account, an Xbox Fusion the size of two DVD cases and performing like four iPads duct taped together could happen. It could be ARM based and passively cooled for all we know.

so its not as bad as people have been complaining it to be?

people will still love e-ink over this low res screen I guess

Wait, why are we discussing HAWKEN?
Did something get announced?

No, people were discussing third party western exclusives, and someone mentioned the fact that HAWKEN had gone off the radar, and had yet to be confirmed for a platform, so naturally people assumed it has to be the WiiU.

There could be no other explanation really could there?

This controller has all sorts of bad-ass uses.

I think I preferred it when this thread was about specs rather than about which small indie developer might have been acquired by Nintendo.
Answer: Probably none

With that in mind, here are the specs I think the Wii U will have:

CPU:
2.8Ghz symmetric 4-core with 2-way SMT
Out-of-order execution
128kB SRAM L2 cache per core, 12MB eDRAM L3 cache shared

GPU:
700Mhz clock speed
800 shader units

RAM:
1GB GDDR5
512MB 1T-SRAM

Sorry, but there's not even remotely a chance of those happening.
