Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

That isn't completely unfair though. The enthusiast press is devoted more towards Microsoft and Sony's systems and properties. In their minds Nintendo has an enormous amount of room to make up to reach parity with their current systems, never mind the next generation. This isn't too dissimilar to the difficulty Sony and MS would face attempting to appeal to Mario fans with a 'Mario killer.'

You realize this is a double edged sword, right? With all the standards they hold Sony/MS to, when they fuck up (Vita's poor second week sales) they hit them HARD.

Nintendo, similarly, is pushed, but Nintendo pushes back. Price drop.

All these writers clamoring for pack in memory cards, or games, or even price drops for Vita won't get them. Sony is INSANELY rigid about pricing once it's been announced.

And it will kill the Vita.

I don't think they will give a fuck if it looks like 360 games, but honestly, I don't expect them to. I think they will have a little more fidelity than 360/PS3 games, and that will give Wii U the edge.

Also, I am counting on there being a killer app that most journos will write that say it helps them "get" the Wii U.

Though with the 3DS it was the 3d tech that was having the journos gush.

And it still is fucking amazing to this day, to look at that screen and realize I'm seeing 3d with no goddamn glasses.

Yeah it makes sense. Steal as much thunder as they can from Nintendo. After the 1, 2, 3 punch Nintendo gave Sony and the Vita launch they'll be out for revenge.

Maybe not obvious but I would like to say GTA V in game rendered teaser trailer.

I'm not so sure on the Vita revenge thing. Sony will more than likely say "it's in development" and continue on.

Darksiders 2, Killer Freaks, Pikmin, Batman: AA, That AssCreed game, Lego City, 2D Mario game, Retro's game, Dragon Quest X, Wii U Sports/Fit/Play, that Sonic Colours game if it was real plus whatever EA are working on.

And more. Probably.

Maybe even really early teasers/CG footage of Zelda, 3D Mario, and Smash Brothers.

Am I missing anything obvious?

EDIT: I guess Tekken, Ninja Gaiden 3, Monolith's game, Tom Clancy, and Rabbids, plus another Ubi game (they said they had 5 in development at e3).
You mean Dimensions? Colors already exists on the Wii. :)

Also, I hope Retro does have something to show. I'm very curious on what they're working on now!

The Wii U? Yes, but it's going to be the same thing from E3 for people that weren't there.

We MIGHT get a new thing or two, but don't expect anything, especially if it's behind closed doors.

Eh, CES.

"IGN: Video of two tablets in action!"

The Wii U could be MORE powerful than the next XBox/PS4, have free online that actually SURPASSES XBL and PSN, come with 2 UPads and a WM+, cost $249, have GTAV + every other third party game coming for 360 + the next systems.
And some people would STILL call it a stupid underpowered gimmick console with no games.
Why? Because it's a Nintendo console.
Even if they did EVERYTHING perfectly, some idiots would still trash the thing.
I WISH I was being hyperbolic...

Meh. Gamers are whores, just endlessly forgiving for the IPs and companies they routinely bow to. Even if Microsoft and Sony were to underwhelm hardware-wise, they'd show Gears and Uncharted, and would be forgiven.

No worries. You are.

Wait, you said 'some idiots'... Okay, that's fine then.

Oops, yeah, dimensions.

And, with Retro consider this - The three Prime games sold a combined ~5.72 million copies worldwide.

DKCR sold 4.98 wordwide.

I think a sequel to that game is far more sensible than another Metroid.

I'm almost convinced that Microsoft is going to annnounce the successor to the Xbox 360 this year with plans for a 2014 release. Wii U having a potential one year head start is something I think Nintendo will greatly need to take advantage of, but most likely won't get enough time to be able to rest easily.

Panic mode Nintendo is best Nintendo.

Need I remind you they recently expanded offices to expand HD development? Those fuckers are working FAST on new shit.

Look at how fast we got a Mario on a handheld. DAMN! And it wasn't an N64 remake either.

They did get a brand new 3D Mario on 3DS in its first year. Heh.

The best part of the Nintendo job listing though was "Network Development".

I think it will be safe if I plan to take the 4th and 5th of June off......... I'm going to need them.

Screw that, I'm taking the whole week off. Way too much info to process in one go otherwise when I get back from work. That's what I get for being a "play (almost) anything on (almost) everything" type of gamer.

I still think Nintendo needs to cash-in on the the "HD remake" craze and release a Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl 1080p bundle with full-on network functionality. Throw in a way to incorporate private groups/clans and mod support, could you imagine how awesome a realized online Smash would be? I'd also vote for a Facebook/Youtube tie in to directly upload replays to the web.

There's just too many things that the Upad, a great network and Smash could bring to a Nintendo console. As a launch window game no less.

You have to remember that the first 2 came out on the Gamecube, with its low user base. Plus, the games didn't sell very well in Japan - at all.
Yeah but still it's sad. The Prime series is 3d shooter/platforming nirvana. I get goose pimples just listening to the title music.

They NEED to do a "Zelda HD Collection". They need to. Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, on the same disc, 1080p, updated textures. BAM. Million seller right there.

Sounds like a great idea. Personally I hate Smash but I know many people who think it is gamer smack. A pack of HD remakes with modern features could be a great launch window title to tide over tha Smash fans until the new one comes.

Not only that, the fucker was shown off FEBRUARY of that year. FEBRUARY - NOVEMBER = INSANE MEGA CRUNCH TIME

But... your E3 slacks will get messy...

The fact is that Nintendo doesn't seem they want to fix this situation in any way
Presenting a console saying "it can do HD" isn't enough even more if they are extremely vague on the online capabilities and the only exclusive games you've announced are a Lego game and a shooter with ugly rabbids that aren't very appealing for a certain type of gamer
then if you add the fact that is extremely unlikely for the WiiU to have the same power of the competitors, then yes Nintendo's will be always seen as a second tier console

I am up to speed on Nintendo news. However, you are right about the things Nintendo can get done when in Panic mode. It's just that perhaps Nintendo will need to go into a Super Panic mode. The Big N was fortunate enough to quickly fix the early issues the 3DS suffered from. It's also benefited from the lukewarm launch of the PS Vita in Japan. Nintendo has to be ready to do all it can for the Wii U and make that potential first year count big time especially in attempt to gain the support for core gamers and the industry in ways it failed to do with the Wii and GameCube. The home console market has just been fiercer competiton for Nintendo to deal with than the handheld market so it naturally has a lot more to prove.

Am I the only one who realizes the uTablet provides the Wii U some dangerous potential to become a system even more desirable to the casual crowd than the Wii was ??

Nintendo may be working hard on simple killer apps for the tablet alone, and nice features and connectivity rather than games. Of course those are coming, but I don't share the same vision of an hardcore machine from Nintendo as many are.

This system will be even more casual than Wii, only with some real hardcore multiplat games to undercover it.

This is my only concern. The arrogance is still there and Reggie was oozing it out of all pores at E3. "check that box" wtf is that?! Nintendo have to do more than check that box to get people to buy I droves, and more importantly, to get ME to buy it.

.

Nope, you aren't. I've been raving about the potential of this ever since E3. If Nintendo can pull it off and market it right I really think they can go gangbusters.

Nintendo's efforts this generation were admirable. What they lacked was 3rd party support, if the WiiU will get that then casuals don't matter at all, just like they never did for any generation.

At first the idea of a tablet gaming machine seemed nichey.... but the world is tablet-crazy right now, and apparantly most of them are being used in the home, in front of the TV, so....

If it gets the basic app suite: Browser, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, etc... I could see the Wii U being a hit.

I don't think it will be quite quite as popular as the Wii despite Wii U's impressive "pocket knife" controller capabilities. The Wii was released during a time when the market conditions were right and Nintendo's competitors greatly underestimated what made the Wii an attractive product.

Um... They've sort of mattered a lot throughout the generations. What are you talking about? And yes, Nintendo should absolutely try to gain favor with that audience, just make sure to deliver a competent online platform and 3rd party games at the same time. The controller has the potential to do both.

The casual Nintendo games for Wii provided me with some of the most fun I ever had on a gaming device. I enjoy social gaming, couch MP and parties with my buddies a lot more than sitting there cursing at the incompetent team of randoms in BF3.

So if they are able to get similar software on the WiiU then more power to them. But I guess people will still act as if Nintendo has gone completely casual again, just like everyone acts like 2008 never ended.

In hindsight, Nintendo was actually one of the most consistent in balancing its portfolio of core and casual games on the Wii. Every year both type of gamers had something to look forward to. Overall, I believe there's been more core gamers released per year than casual.

The only real screw ups Nintendo made were with its tv ads. You know, back when it focused early on forcing its core games into the "Family Couch" advertisiement approach, which fans did not like. It also didn't help that it didn't show much marketing for games like Metroid Prime 3. Of course, and perhaps the worst offenders, were the E3's of 2007 and 2008. That is where the perception of selected software Nintendo choose to show made it really seem like the company was betraying the core gamer. The presentations mainly lacked core franchise games so it made sense to us. However, in Nintendo's mind, it made more sense to promote casual products like Wii Fit because it would be a harder sell for them to get people interested in it had such products not been a big focus at the industry's biggest gaming event.

Sensible? Then it's also sensible not to release games like Xenoblade and have Monolith soft work on Mario Party for instance. The prime games won countless awards and are well known (if by name only) by the audience Nintendo wants to persuade to buy a WiiU. Please look at the bigger picture. You want your best studios working on stuff the other studios can't produce, not the other way around.

Pretty much.
I've been saying it for years.

"No way will we ever see X again from Nintendo! They'll just make a new Mario or Wii___!"

Yeah, that's why Nintendo made games like Sin and Punishment 2 and Reveign and Fling Smash.

They don't expect everything they make to sell a bajillion copies. They make games to help please a lot of different audiences.

That wasn't because of sales.
That's because Nintendo is weird.
Like, there's no Star Fox Wii, despite it being a perfect way to use the controller.

I don't think it's weird there wasn't an F-Zero Wii. On the Wii there probably was not enough potential to create a better game than GX...
