Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered a few times, but this thread is decently-sized. I hope nobody minds if I ask again.

I'll be in the market for an iPad in a few months. Now the rumors say that the iPad 3 will be announced or launching anywhere between March and late Summer, or even later. Is it worth waiting for?

How much better could it really be? I know, it's all up in the air right now.. but anyone have any advice?

Cheers!

if you're only looking to buy one in a few months, just wait.

There's nothing wrong with getting an ipad 2 now though, as you can enjoy the apps and sell it towards an ipad 3 whenever you want to do that. Apple rumors are historically laughable, so I wouldn't pay attention to anything anyone says about the ipad 3 right now.

Well, I was planning to wait until April/May for my iPad purchase but this thread got me too hyped and after seeing one sweet online deal I just had to order it. So, just received my new iPad 2 with 16GB/Wi-Fi and I have to say I'm pretty excited! My first Apple product too. Definitely going to spend this evening checking out all these GAF recommended apps.

Well, we do know for certain that it includes a flux capacator, so time travel is a distinct possibility. The case design is a lot more bulky this time to accomodate the fleshlight they've installed, and it'll make a mean coffee if you pour the beans into the multi-use organic jack as well.

Sold. I'll also have a great place to throw my garbage away, into the Mr. Fusion! :-)

Thanks for the advice, folks. I'll wait. I know that the jump from 'nothing' to 'iPad' will be very large, just as it was this summer between a flip phone and an iphone. But a few more weeks or months of waiting won't hurt me too much. I'll keep myself busy reading about all the apps I'm missing out on!

Interesting about the retina display rumors. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Just got some spam from Adonit about new stuff CES:
Jot
The next step in stylus evolution. Everything great about Jot, just smarter. You still get the precision that has revolutionized tablet accuracy, but now with pressure sensitivity, the long awaited palm rejection, and short cuts to the tools you use most often.

Jot Touch isn’t the only new kid on the block. Come get acquainted with Jot Mini and Jot Flip.

Writer
You asked for it, you got it. The all new Writer for 2012 is now rechargeable and comes with a larger keyboard for added comfort. You can even detach the keyboard from the folio, giving you a stylish case while you travel. Writer just took tablet keyboards to the next level.
I'm guessing it'll be like that other thing on Kickstarter posted a while back with extra hardware and software components involved.

Anyone know of a good app to keep track of when tv shows are on, theres a website that I use but lately it's been missing loads of episodes!
TV Forecast HD

They should all work with the same apps, right? More choices, and hopefully wider distribution, is great for us users.

Hey guys,

I have been looking all over the iTunes store/App Store numerous times, but I still cannot find a minimalist/easy to use world time application.

So Gaf, what is a minimalist/simplistic/easy to use world time application?

Thanks!

What's wrong with the stock clock application? You can add multiple clocks to it easily, and it's as simple as it gets.

Seriously. There's no real reason Apple can't include the Clock, Stocks, Weather and Voice Memo apps on the iPad. They'd be very useful.

I use a countdown timer all the time and have to use a shitty third party app. And I use my broken iPod touch for an alarm. It works great because it has snooze. Third party clocks can't do snooze because they can't be integrated.

Stocks and weather would be really useful in the Notifications list like they are on the iPhone.

And I see no reason to not have a Voice Memo app.

Really stupid oversights. Even the original missing apps that showed up on the iPod first and took a whole version to get to the iPhone made it there eventually.

Missing apps in iOS 6 please, Apple!

It's taking the simplicity bullshit too far imo. They could easily add weather and stocks in the notification center as they do with the iPhone.

Either they're planning on building an inline-calculator-keyoard without the need for an app or it's just them being lame.

A friend just gave me a demo of snapspeed, Apple's app of the year which I never even heard of before, and holly shit it's quite amazing. It's for iPhone too, works beautifully.

It's really the definition of an intuitive and fresh app, glad it got more in-the-know thanks to Apple giving it app of the year, I need to buy it when I get an iTunes gift card.

FFFFFFML. I was staying on top of the free game deals more but I still don't know how I missed this. Time to wait several months until someone from the outside can buy and bring with them an iTunes card.

ilounge

1) A few next-gen iPad notes, ahead of the show. Both cameras are getting upgrades. Front goes HD, rear becomes iPhone 4/4S-like (bigger).

2) Body of the next iPad is, as we previously reported, getting just a little thicker to accommodate new parts - little = 1mm give or take.

3) Curve radiuses on the body will change only a little to accommodate the added thickness, not dramatically. Think iPad 2 Pro, not a redesign.

4) Looks likely that iPad 2 will stick around at lower price point, say $399, and next iPad with high-def screen + cameras will sit atop it.

5) Incidentally, our source believes that the next iPad’s rear camera will be the same as iPhone 4S’s, b/c camera hole is very similar.

6) If Apple is in fact moving the front camera to FaceTime HD, calls from the next iPad to current Macs + vice-versa will look _much_ better.

7) Source thinks date will be similar to iPad 2’s. Correctly says a January launch (never likely) would anger holiday 2011 iPad 2 recipients.

The iPad 3 will be met with deafening sighs if it isn't a Retina display, methinks.

Like iPhone 4S level sighs.

I am 99.9% positive next iPad will have a retina display. Gruber has said it and I lay complete faith in what he says when it comes to Apple rumors.

iPad 3 will 1,000% have a retina display.

Pretty smart to keep iPad 2 around as it still is a very capable device. Lowering the price when the 3 hits will ensure continued Apple domination.

i dont understand this. The 4s is great, as long as your not on an iphone 4. The ipad2 had some people sighing, i remember cause i was in the threads cause i was on board to get one regardless.

Idiots will scoff at it and people will still buy it in droves making it even more successful than the previous model?
Sounds about right.

I really really really want it to have a retina display though.

also, lol, that iLounge guy is a clown.

If Siri ever comes to the iPad in a future OS update or locked to a future version of the hardware, they'll need Stocks, Weather, and Clocks at the very, very least.

Not necessarily - Siri doesn't use the existing iOS apps for that information, she pulls it down off of the internet, usually from sites like Wolfram Alpha.

No, they don't.

"Siri, set a timer for 5 minutes."
"I am sorry, I don't know what 'Siri, set a timer for 5 minutes' means.

Also, Siri is not triggering the API for any apps, save for Clocks. Weather and stocks are built coming straight from the Siri App, in fact, stock information is pulled from Wolfram Alpha.

Edit: High five, Syracuse022.

I believe Apple said Siri is never coming to anything older than the iPhone 4S. Which is stupid as my iPad 2 is fully capable. So let's hope they reverse that silly decision by WWDC.

Don't count on it. Siri is no different than video capture being tied to the 3GS.

My wife is thinking about trying an Ipad as a cell phone replacement. Anyone else here done this? If so, how's it working?

Is there a go-to app for making calls, Google Voice or Skype, I suppose?

We want to check the viability of this option before we board the hype train, so the opinions of you veterans are greatly appreciated.

Google voice won't actually make phone calls through data, you still need a regular phone plan, but skype would work. I can't imagine someone actually replacing a phone with an iPad though, maybe an iPod Touch.

iPod Touch would be more viable if there was a 3G model.

I would love it if Siri was on iPad 2 and I could use it to turn pages in ComicZeal.

I just discovered a scratch/dent on the top right corner of my iPad 2. :/ Feels bad, man.

I have no idea how that happened. The thing is in a case, for steve's sake.

You realize in order to activate Siri you need to hold Home for like 2 seconds then speak, then wait for her to respond, then wait for the action.

How would that be easier than.. I dunno, how do you turn pages in ComicZeal? Either swiping or tapping a button. Either way, neither would be slower than Siri.

It'd be like having your very own butler and making him only change the channel for you.

The Common Sense Hit Squad strikes again. Damn you!

Well, depends on the complexity of your command. I think even setting a timer is faster with Siri than doing it manually.

EDIT: Ofcourse I just realized that specific command would not be possible on iPad since there's no clock app.

When your wife sits around the house does she sit around the house? Cause otherwise the iPad would be a bit big as a cell phone replacement.
