Wii U Spotted At CES

What's wrong with playing Nintendo games? Why must I only be happy with AAA third party games? Also I've enjoyed plenty of third party games on the Wii.

I'm starting to find that Nintendo topics have the most intense levels of defensiveness and ridiculous amounts of assumptions.

Chill people.

The Wii has a really great library, it just doesn't have as many AAA as the other systems. This is not a bad thing though, as I tend to like quirky, under the radar games.

To me, saying the Wii has a bad library is kinda like a movie fan who only watches Transformers and Armageddon. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

It is worth noting that both of the other platforms also have quirky, under the radar games that get ignored by everybody. I don't mean this as a slight against the Wii, but I don't think it's as strong of a defence of the Wii as many people think it is.

This guy:

Eh, can't speak for the guy, but I think his comment was more directed towards the idea that Nintendo games alone make the Wii's library substantial in comparison to the other platforms. As much as I love Nintendo games, I think it would be impossible to make that claim without coming off as a total fanboy.

The Wii has great Nintendo games, and the occasional 3rd party gem - sure. But in pure volume and quality of AAA titles, and overall 3rd party support, the Wii is simply outclassed by both competitors. Frankly, I don't see how anyone can suggest otherwise.

MY OPINION IS FACT AND YOU MUST LIVE WITH IT! YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LIKE NINTENDO GAMES MORE THAN OTHER COMPANIES UNLESS YOU ARE A FANBOY, AND IF YOU'RE A FANBOY YOUR OPINION SUCKS!

I allways found ways to incorporate other toys into my Lego creations. Be it giants from outer space, strange dragons, derilect space crafts. Lego was compatible to all of them. I still remember my fully functional Alien spaceport with hydraulic landing pads and blast doors. If I have kids one day, I will drown them with Lego. ... and probably just play with it myself.

I was the same, only with Construx instead... but the number of cool vehicles I would build for my Ninja Turtle figures to ride around in was insane. I think my crowning achievement was to fully recreate the boss at the end of Venom (Hard) in SNES Starfox, complete with morphing parts. It was amazing.

Just goes to show you don't need the most expensive cutting edge technology to have fun. No, I don't care how old that makes me sound. :P

I used to do the same thing. The big toys back in the day were thundercats, ghostbusters and transformers and I used to mix them all up with lego and play doh to create the worst monsterpiece clusterf*cks you can imagine. The ecto plasm I had for the Ghostbusters HQ ended up dried and crustly all over everything in my life. I had proper vehicles for action figures (turtle van, thundertank, batmobile) but I always liked making my own stuff..

I made a k'nex lightsaber too... but not one this cool:

I remember once getting a friend of mine to start digging a bunker in our back garden, because I convinced him we were going to build a Starship Enterprise shuttle under ground... I stayed indoors while he did my bidding, and when my mum and dad came home he caught ALL the shit. Amazing.

Obviously third party games weren't a factor in their enjoyment of the system. Even if all the games you got for Wii were from Nintendo, and enjoyed those games more than the games you got for the other systems, you will still say the Wii was your favorite system, because that was your experience. If you didn't care for whatever PSN game there was, then you simply didn't care.
Well that's true, I guess. I like the Wii too I just think it lacks the diverse mix of games that we got on the 360 and PS3. Nintendo first party games are still awesome though, no question about that. For me, I don't think that's enough when it's stretching out for a whole generation, great games are a bit too far between imo

BUT, I do have very high hopes for the the WiiU though. It seems like third party is onboard this time in a way that hasn't been done on a Nintendo console for quite some time. That bodes very very well. And personally I have no problem what so ever with the design either, I think it looks super nice, and oh yes, I'll be getting one on day 1 ;)

what the fuck this thread

this thread

why

This guy:
I tried to explain it better above. I don't have any problem at all with Nintendos games. I love them. But you just don't get the same mix of great games on a console if you only play first party games. But compared to the other two I think Nintendo manage the best if you take away the third party games. Sony come in on second place. And MS is last.

My god this thread...You know sometimes I really hope that people don't actually believe half the stuff they write in some of these Nintendo threads, and are just attempting to be funny.

I've had my share of fun with the Wii too, my shelf holds 31 Wii games right now, I actually stopped playing on the 360 for a full year when the Wii released.
But I still don't get how you can think the Wii is your favorite. Why?

Sure, we got;
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Xenoblade Chronicles
Zelda TP and SS
Donkey King Returns,
New Super Mario Bros Wii
etc

As a nostalgic I've had tons of fun with WiiWare and VC too, while they still released games for it.

I'm sure there are a few mroe games to list but none that pops up in my mind right now. And notice that those games up there are almost only Nintendo games. That's the problem I have with Wii. The third party support has been a joke. We got plenty of shovelware but almost no true AAA games from third party devs.

Meanwhile, both the PS3 and the 360 has been superb when it comes to third party AAA games. And XBLA and PSN has been at least as good as WiiWare, if not better, and they're still releasing games there.
Now, third party games are usually quite bad on PS3 compared to the 360 version so I usually play them on the 360 instead, so I guess the PS3 has been more like a Wii for me in that there are mostly Sony's own games that has been making the console truly shine. Still if you don't mind a few framedrops here and there the games are at least there as a choice. On Wii we rarely got the chance to play those games.

I will say first that I bought my Wii late 2010, so I had a huge library of games to explore at will. If I had bought it at launch or earlier on and experienced the droughts, i'd probably feel a bit different.

Funnily enough, it's not the first party games that make me love the system. I think the Mario games are poor, the Zelda games ok-ish and the Metroid games with their worst installments. I've played games like Fragile Dreams, NiGHTS journey of dreams, Sakura Wars 5, No More Heroes, Sonic Colours, Disaster Day of Crisis, Okami, MadWorld, Sin and Punishment, Rayman, Let's Tap, Endless Ocean, Samba de Amigo, Zack and wiki, Muramasa, Alien Syndrome, Overkill, Tenkaichi 3, Tri, DQ SWords, Ghost Squad to name some and they have all been great games for me. I know some of you are thinking "lol, bad games" but it's what I like. Suport has dried up but I knew what I was getting when I purchased the system.

Then there are the fun times i've had with friends with games like Raving Rabbids, Wii series, Mario Party 8, Sonic secret rings multiplayer, samba de amigo and soon Boom Street. Experiences I wasn't getting on the other consoles. And of course the amazing 1st party are still there. Donkey Kong returns, Warioware, Fire emblem.

The PS3 and 360 were amazing for me around 2005-2008. Games like Kameo, Condmned, Lost planet, Valkyria chronicles, DOA4, the darkness Chromehounds, blue dragon, Lost odyssey, gears 1, RBS. Not so much now. I've played a lot of the AAA games and have found them to be pretty crappy, not my cup of tea. Assassins creed series, skyrim, batman games, battlefield etc. But there are a few games once in a while I love like borderlands and Dark/demons souls. PSN/XBLA are ok too.

This is probably why I think the WiiU will be shitty for me. Nintendo are going to get 360/PS3 3rd party support and thats boring. Atleast with the Wii we got those games AND all these extra wii games. More games for everyone.

The nature of the wii obviously helped inspire a lot of those games, and definitely turned it into a complimentary system to its HD brothers. I'm glad it turned out the way it did, and I hope Wii-U is similarly unique - even if it slants more mainstream this time.

Wii missed out big time on third-party multiplatfom support and quite frankly, I've grown tired of having to suffer through these game droughts. However, I do agree with radioheadrule83.

The way I see it, one of the worst things third-parties can do is offer Wii U multiplatform games with dual analog controls and the ability to stream it to the controller's touch screen.

I must say that you have an interesting take on the whole thing ;) I think I stopped playing on Wii about the time when you started, lately I have just returned when Nintendo released a new game.

I've tried two of the games you mention, Zack and Wiki and Enless Ocean, and they were great, so I don't think "lol, bad games" ;)
I actually get a bit sad though that I haven't tried the rest. Are those games regarded as great games by the gaming press? I'm trying to figure out why I haven't bother trying them out.

I totally agree with the Wii being great for multiplayer, that was one of the reason I stopped play on the 360 when the Wii got released. Wii Sports and Wii Play killed everything back then.
I get that Kinect has made the 360 better though, but I'm still on the fence with that one.

You didn't like Skyrim? It's probably my favorite game right now, I think it's sooooo good, and I'd definitely recommend that you try it some more if you can. But yeah, it's a matter of taste so.

About that last bit, about the WiiU. Considering that you like the Wii so much right now I think you'll be plesantly surprised when you try the WiiU. Not that I know anything about it really, it might be my fantasy talking but to me it just looks like it might have the potential to please just about everyone; fans of third party games, Nintendo games, Wii games, fans of small and odd titles with fresh ideas, etc.
It's compatible with all the Wii accesories too I think, Wii Remote+, Wii Balance Board, etc. And hopefully we'll still have Virtual Store and get to play all those old gems too, NES/SNES/MD/TG16/NEOGEO/C64, etc, maybe even directly on the WiiU Tablet - That would be really neat I think, like a gigantic portable console for old school awesomeness at home! :D
Maybe we could play DS games too on it, an emulator that makes the WiiU Tablet a DSi XXXL if you're holding it vertically? I know, I should stop now lol or I'll get disapointed no matter what they show us :/ Arrgh, E3 can't come soon enough! ;P

The list war/AAA argument is of course extremely subjective from all angles, but let me just say that for a fan of platformers and local MP like I am, the Wii library is rather legendary. My Wii "keeper" shelf is pretty beefy.

As much as I hate to pull this thread back on topic. Was the WiiU actually playable at CES? Did any one write up their impressions?

I like the Wii too, but other than Nintendo's admittedly excellent games, its library is extremely limited in comparison to the other two consoles. I think it's very hard to deny that honestly.

I like platformers. i like quirky games. I like jrpgs. I like rail shooters. I like adventure games. I love the Virtual Console. I LOVE couch multiplayer.

There you go, Wii jas the best library and X360/PS3 have a very limited library.

XBox Live Arcade, Bayonetta, Vanquish and Cave games make it so I like a lot my 360.
Some of Sony's first party output (God of War, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm) and GT5 makes it that I like my PS3 even if it's basically a GT machine for me.

PC + Wii would be my choice... If I had to choose.

The system was there just enough to get media coverage. It doesn't seem to be playable to the general public. The picture that this thread originated with is from a set. The WiiU is connected to the TV off to the left and it is running the Zelda demo. The tablet controller just shows the logo. You can see it on ABC News by following this.
