Wii U Spotted At CES

Hey, that's a real concern of mine. :(

Outside of being a little long, I don't think the Wii U is that large as it is.

I definitely want a redesign though. The Wii's design was minimalist but inspired. This is just a lazy attempt to evoke the Wii's look. They didn't even bother to create a chic stand for the thing.

Remember that the design could change come e3

I don't know why people don't realize this. The DS went through this change from its debut E3 to release, which was just a few months difference

God, that original DS design looks terrible, the newer one is better, but not by much. The DS Lite is such a huge improvement.

That pre-release DS design... UGHHH. Can't believe I was so excited when I first saw it. It really does look like a cheap toy.

Just got to watch the interview. I love how Reggie openly laughs at the idea that people want to know basic, important information about the products Nintendo wants to sell.

In fact, it's amazing how little Nintendo actually talks about their products when invited to do interviews, at least in the US nowadays. They drop a name or two of what's currently selling, and otherwise just spout about their philosophy.

A perfect response to your post would be that reggie not my prob pic.

I can't stand the position of the sliders and the fact that there are no normal analogs. It would be so much better if the positions of the slider and buttons on the right side were flipped.

Also, obligatory long console is loooooooong.

Might make reaching the triggers a bit hard?

I believe they are on the right side indentation.

That's right: the E3 model didn't even have stereo speakers built in. This was added for the final, retail version. Again--changes can and do happen.
Okay, so adding great stereo speakers in the final product is what I would call a significant change. Hopefully the same goes for Wii U.

Have to disagree. I think the black makes it a lot more cheap.

Nah, I think that if they had sleeked up the outside parts, it would have been the best system design ever. The black really emphasizes the 'two screens' deal. The final design looks like the top screen got slapped on with it's terrible looking hinge.

As far as the U goes, I think they should try and slim the controller down a bit. It looks like there is a bunch of unused space, maybe not, but that's how it seems.

I think they should switch the position of the disc slot to the long side, so it would better fit in the TV rack. Honestly, in the current state it looks like the vents in the back are pointless because the WiiU would kiss the wall.

God I hope they don't make the Wii-U as small as the Wii. It's nice and all to have something compact for easy storage or whatever, but honestly, I'd gladly welcome the size trade off if it meant more power.

Of course, that doesn't mean that it has to be a choice between the Wii or the 360. You can have a nice sleek, decently sized machine too.

Now that it seems that Sony and MS wont be showing off a new console this E3.
I can see why Nintendo, via Reggie, is calling 2012 the year of the WiiU.

But it can't really be much of a year, if it launches at the end of the year.
I've been predicting a November launch, but I got a feeling now they might plan
an earlier launch to dominate Xmas sales. Maybe as early as September, hell, they might even launch it around E3.

In a sense, Nintendo has to choke Sony and MS early. Kill their momentum. If the PS3 and 360 continue to increasingly sell well up to a launch of their new 'consoles' in 2014, the WiiU would be in trouble because third parties will simply ride this generation out up to 2014 without having to really support the WiiU. It will be Dreamcasted.

Nintendo will especially be looking at getting those CoD sales from the 360, as well as killing any Halo buzz. Technically, Nintendo should have enough first party and second party support to successfully sell the WiiU to hardcore Nintendo fans and a good portion of their Wii base early on. But they need enough time before E3 2013 to convince their new intended market.

WiiU is small, but its also position restricted. This means Nintendo expects the machine to give off more heat than the Wii when it launched. I also suspect Nintendo has been looking into various new ways to keep their HD consoles cool. The 360 must have made them worry about that. So it shouldn't automatically mean smaller is less powerful.

WiiU is about 50% bigger than Wii.
