Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

I hope you realise that's just a 360 degrees video that you control with the Wii U controller instead of a mouse.

Finished Metroid Fusion again (so good) this afternoon, and it leaves me hungry for more 2D Metroid! What do you guys think the chances of a 2D Metroid Dread/Metroid V on the Wii U are?

To me it seems a better fit than the 3DS. The controller could potentially be used very nicely as well (e.g. hold up the comtroller to the screen for 2D X-ray Visor). A 1080p Super Metroid style game would also be gorgeous.

Thoughts?

Well, after playing SS and seeing just how annoying it is that the thing seems like it needs to set every few mins I would be all for a "Wiimote Perfect" that, like the Sony thing, doesn't need that. And the NK should have it as well.

But Nintendo be assholes with this so we'll see. I wonder if the tablet can be used with the Wiimote+ to do this ... hope so.

You do realize nearly EVERY menu you went in, involving a "pointer" item centered the motion+ at where you were pointing, right? I seriously think most people assumed it just started drifting when that wasn't the case at all

After playing Might Switch Force I'm FIENDING for a high quality 2D game on the 3DS. The 3D effect makes them look incredible

I want a brand new metroid prime.

It's crazy that Nintendo is pretty much jumping an entire generation... I'm so hyped to see how all their franchises look HD'd up. Can't wait. CAN'T WAIT.

Just a thought, but in a crazy alternate universe where Rare were still owned by Nintendo, the Wii U pad would work really well with the Farsight gun from Perfect Dark. If you actually had to use the Wii U pad to search for other players before you could hit them it would really balance the weapon out.

There’s one thing I would like to know how Nintendo is going to tackle, and that’s FIFA (and similar games).

Single player, no problem. Online multiplayer, no problem. But local multiplayer with Wii Remotes will not sell this game. They can’t count on everyone buying Remotes AND Classic Controllers either. Seriously, how can this work on Wii U? They need the main line EA Sports games.. and it must play like the PS3/360 versions. "Wii-pointer PES" is great, but it’s not what the average gamers want, they want „normal” FIFA with all the features and gameplay that they’re used to. The only solution I can see is to release a smaller uPad without the screen (uController), but that would kill all Wii Remote support.. they can’t have uPad, uController AND Wii Remote..

Alright. Nintendo rather seems to step into a mid-generation, something between the current and the upcoming Xbox console.
I don't want to assume this, though it is a possibility. We still have no idea what the final Wii U is like.

I'm just excited to play Nintendo games in HD.

Did I miss something?

Look man, I loved the Wii, it was my most played console this gen (also got a 360 and ps3), but if you wanna misconstrue what I meant, that's fine.

edit:

new multiplayer mode for a fps. everyone is a sniper put in random spots in a huge mountainous landscape. can only stay in certain areas but can see the entire map through your sniper scope using the lifted wiiu pad. would be pretty sick

I'm late on this, but I can't believe people thought the street view thing was rendered. That would've looked spectacular as rendered footage. Some should be prepared to have their expectations shattered.

I'm pretty sure if it was rendered it would not have been available for the press to see. They want one huge surprise in E3.

Have we seen anything as beautiful this gen as that Zelda tech demo (regardless of 720p ={)?
Honestly the Zelda demo looked nice but you can't really gauge enough from it to compare it to games we've seen this generation. Anyway it's all meaningless in the end, it's a fact that the Wii-U will be capable of outputting better graphics than the prettiest looking games this gen (uncharted/god of war/etc), it'll be up to the developers and nintendo's first parties especially to make it happen.

Well, some people think the console will only be as powerful as an XBox360, so it only figures that we'll have people on the other end of the spectrum who think it could produce photorealistic graphics.

I know this will sound pretty silly, but I'm almost glad that the Wii was so underpowered, 480p with no AA, so that the jump to Wii U will be enormous.

p.s. Dolphin makes me wish the Wii was somehow capable, in 2006, of 60 fps 1080p w/ 4xAA, though.

And they'll continue thinking that 5 years from now even after being proven wrong repeatedly.

Question for the techies: Would it be possible, and if so, how probable, that a homebrew application (assuming the console be hacked) could run Wii games in HD? Basically, to port "dolphin" to the WiiU?

First time I've seen the Tokyo footage. Is that realtime footage or real life footage? lol I can't tell!

Oh and once again the lighting in the Zelda tech demo can't be reiterated enough, simply looks amazing!

Edit: answered the Tokyo footage for me. Wasn't sure as it was so short of a video! :)

Here's some speculation. Nintendo could be planting the seeds for a Chrono Trigger sequel. Nintendo has been nursing its relationship w/ Yuji Horii with the Dragon Quest franchise. They've also funded the development of The Last Story, a game by Sakaguchi. If anything, Nintendo are in a position to make it happen. They own Monolithsoft and most of the other important names (Mitsuda) are freelance. Square Enix might be getting desperate with the Final Fantasy gravy train's engine starting to grow weary. A new Chrono title has the chance to mark a triumphant return to form and herald in a new era of jRPG goodness.

Put me down for Actraiser with full sim mode. I'd even take a 3d remake of the 2d original.

This panaromaview got me thinking.

I am sure it has been said already, but who thinks there will be a headgear peripheral that you can attach the controller on so you can play VR-type game? You would use the wiimote+nunchuck to play.

Though... the controller is maybe too big for that, what do you guys think?

It looks like Nintendo Technology Development, the Seattle based hardware group under Howard Cheng, has been quite busy researching and developing several of the technologies being used in Project Cafe. One of the more interesting features is their work on tracking systems and head-mounted stereoscopic displays along with CPU and GPU research and evaluation.

What I'd love to see developers do with the panoramic view options is include weird easter eggs that you can only see if you look to your right or left or behind you during a cutscene.

Or I suppose that could also have a part of the legitimate gameplay, that's good too.

I actually got a little excited after seeing the Demo. I imagined something like the older Area 51 or Maximum Force Arcade games. Who's to say they couldn't take that same footage and overlay some alien space ships chasing you and you have to shoot em down.

Goddamn that game is still beautiful almost 10 years later.

I believe that is a Dolphin shot.

I want Nintendo to push its teams to have at the very least CG target renders ready for e3 for all of its major franchises. I know it won't happen, but I keep imagining a SSB reveal trailer like scenario where the character's Wii models are 'upgraded' to 'HD' before our eyes. I think that would get a lot of people excited.

Given that Animal Crossing, Kid Icarus and Paper Mario are still not released for 3DS despite being unveiled at e3 2010, I wouldn't mind (read: would love) seeing franchises in HD even if the games were up to 18 months away.

And Kirby would still be the same.

No. Zelda SS uses Motion+ for everything. You don't need to point to the screen to use it.
Correct, but it does use the sensor bar for on the fly re-calibration. Do this test. Take your sensor bar and put it on the left or right of yourself and not on the TV. Move the sword slowly so Link copies your movements. When your Wii Remote "Sees" the sensor bar on the side, your "centre" will move.

That was the single best way of showing the difference between the Wii and Gamecube although i felt that Samus would have been a better choice instead of Pikachu because the difference between Melee Samus and Brawl Samus was a lot more impressive.

Indeed - it was a good way of showing off the differences between the systems. Given that the Wii U could be 10X+ more powerful than the Wii, showing off that kind of difference in such an obvious way would go a long way to a) shut up detractors b) get old fans excited.

I agree Samus would have been better, but Pikachu is more popular.
