Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Speaking of Nintendo buying stuff, did they buy Monster Games yet? Last four games they made were for Nintendo, website wasn't updated in more than a year, and they were hiring a few months ago, so they're certainly not dead. They also hired a character animator, something they never had and never needed in the past (at least as far as I can tell).

Why?

No seriously, why? Everything what defined RARE back in the day isn't there anymore. I'd rather have Nintendo buy another western studio. Or expand Retro.
That's exactly what they seem to do right now. On the other hand, it seems they all but closed NST.

Pilotwings?

Only reason to get Rare is for the IP's, but it'll probably not be worth the money.

I hope Nintendo will work together more with 3rd party teams to output more of their smaller IPs. Hopefully they took up Kamiya's offer to have Platinum do a Starfox game, would be fantastic near launch.

The thing is, I don't know if Nintendo is willing to close these kind of deals. All of those ventures like F-Zero GX, Star Fox Assault and Metroid Other M for instance weren't smash hits. Quality is one, but the size of the franchise is another. If Nintendo announces a partner project in the not so distant future, they will need soms sort of guarantee of it being a smash hit. Personally, after Ono from Capcom joked about Nintendo vs. Capcom I really hope that will happen one day.

We talking about Retro yet?

Says who?
Nintendo doesn't make every game a smash hit.
It's not like these partnerships get huge budgets.
I just don't get where you think that every game has to be huge seller.

So, I re-watched most of E3 2006 Nintendo conference. It was 1 hour and 5 minutes long. Only 15 minutes was dedicated to DS, rest of the time was all about Wii.

The pacing of the conference was very good, with little talk and much video fotage of games.

They showed Wii Music, Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy, MP3, Zelda TP, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Project Hammer (which was cancelled later), Fire Emblem, Excite Truck, something more that I forgot.
They also showed some third party games including on-stage demo of Red Steel.

They didn´t reveal the price. I searched and found that it was revealed in September.

As launch date they only said Q4, no specific dates. Also revealed in September.

Unless Wii U releases in Q3, I am thinking we won´t know the price or date this time either. They won´t reveal all information either, as was the case with Wii at E3.
Lots of games from Nintendo were shown at E3, including new IPs and also Mario, Zelda and Metroid.

I am thinking, this time around there will be "only" a new Mario game and a new Metroid of these 3 key franchises. I don´t think we will see Zelda for Wii U at this years E3, as it was just released for Wii (Hopefully I am wrong).

A new Zelda for 3DS will be shown.

Pikmin Wii U is basically confirmed, I am sure we will see it at E3.
Maybe F-Zero for Wii U.
Several new IP´s will be shown.
Wii U Tablet game demos feels pretty certain as well.

In the GC/Wii era if a game didn't perform spectaculary, it didn't matter. Budgets were manageable. With Wii U on the way, game development will be more expensive. If a game doesn't perform very well, Nintendo will feel the burn.

There will be a number of thirdpary titles profiled too.... Darksiders 2 seems likely to attract some sort of attention, it was interesting how vocal the developer was about Wii U last E3.

Darksiders 2 will most likely be featured at the Nintendo Conference at E3. I wouldn't be surprised if we got a stage demo.

I think they will show Darksiders 2 in a video reel. On stage demo from one or several third parties will happen, but I think it will only happen with a game that is build for the new controller.

I don´t think Darksiders 2 will use the controller´s screen that much. Of the games we know of, maybe Killer Freaks From Outer Space or Aliens Colonial Marines has a better chance of beeing demonstrated.

I'm thinking we'll see Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U at E3. Nintendo and EA made a big deal about their partnership last E3, and Mass Effect seems like a shoe in.

I would have agreed with you last month.
But ever since Nintendo stated that 2012 will be the year of the WiiU,
and, unlike the Wii, where they stated launch in Q4, I see WiiU launching soon after or during E3, where prices will be announced.

You simply cannot claim a "year" if your product is released at the end of the year.

Like with the 3DS, what they probably plan to do is create momentum up to Xmas, by launching key titles and services. Thus, overshadowing the spotlight from the current generation.

It feels almost certain that EA will show at least one sports game, at Nintendos conference I mean.
Maybe a football game, where you use the screen to manage your team.

If you are right, than we will most likely get more information about Wii U as of GDC or even before that. I hope you are right :)

MoH 2 was accidently announced via that Tweet right? It wouldn't surprise me if EA would stage a demo of the multiplayer if Origin is available on Wii U. Darksiders 2 will be there. Something Capcom will be there as well.

They will most likely show Dragon Quest X in some form, maybe a release date. Isn´t it suppose to come out in 2012? Would be a good launch title in Japan for the Wii U.

I'm curious as to what Monolith's cooking up for the Wiiwoo. I remember coming across a recruitment page with an image of a... UFO (not really sure what I was looking at) crash-landed in a desert with someone overlooking the scenery on a rocky relief.

Ahoy, Alien conspiracy game? :P

Personally, I expect something from Monolith Soft.

They revealed Monado (Xenoblade) at E3 2009 and released it a year later, and with them starting recruiting at the end of 2010 and revealing a Wii U project in the works after E3 2011 their game could've been in development for 1-2 years by the Wii U's release; I wouldn't be surprised if it were released in the first year of the Wii U's life.

Xenoblade was released in Japan in June 2010. Localisation wouldn't require much involvement from Monolith, so they'll have been working on something for at least two years by the time the Wii U launches.

Edit: In fact, they'll have been working on something for two years by the time E3 rolls around, so an announcement from them is pretty much inevitable.

Wave Race Wii U.
If I say it enough times, it will happen.

I've latched onto this idea as well over the last few days. It definitely has more appeal than F-Zero at this point. In fact, I don't know why so many people on these boards think a new F-Zero is likely, except that their enthusiasm has blinded them to the facts.

Hell, I was accused of being anti-Nintendo when I fantasized that they get the old Chrono gang back together. Yet, in this very thread we have baseless speculation on a new Star Tropics, of all titles! Haha, all I'm saying is anything goes as far as hope goes, but let us separate our wishes from what is likely.

very much excited for their game. Monolith + HD + the types of games they make = too good to be true.

I agree. I know when Xenoblade was released (I imported the Japanese version at launch) and fully believe they started work right after, if not before (I'm sure I read Honne stated working on "something secret" around Xenoblade's release); I just said 1-2 to protect myself in case nothing comes E3.

With their recruitment efforts even accepting people with no industry experience possibly pointing to a deadline I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the game were set for launch. That said, their articles on their website make me question whether it's their new Kyoto studio that are going to be working on the Wii U...

And the second Monolith Wii U interview is still untranslated. I also wonder how big they are now. They used to work on two to three games at a time, and they even opened a second studio last year.

Sin and Punishment and F-Zero GX are by far the best collaborations they've done critically. I'm not sure what happened with Star Fox and Namco. The first level was good, but then it all went downhill. I think they had a good idea, but they need to look at games like War Hawk if they're going to continue to pursue that. The controls were horrible for the on foot sections.

Other M was such a cluster-f*ck I don't even know where to begin. It could have been great, instead it was average. There's already been a lot of debate about that so I don't want to go there.

As far as Kamiya asking to do Star Fox, I had no idea. I always thought Factor 5 would have been a good fit, but perhaps Kamiya could bring some fresh air to the series after all of these botched attempts. Personally, I'd rather see him do a Viewtiful Joe inspired Donkey Kong game, but regardless Nintendo should be sending them development kits. They need games like Metal Gear Rising on Wii U as well as games from Konami. It's a bit concerning we're already seeing it looked over.

75 as of March 2011, though that surely changed as you say.

Platinum x Tokyo EAD for a Jungle Beat 2! We could have the drumming back with the Wii U screen!!!

That's a possibility. Actually, I think Treasure might be a better fit for Star Fox too. After watching the Battle Mii video, that seems like a good direction to take. They can make these series popular again with the right direction.

Didn't quite a few of them help with Skyward Sword ? I'm not sure we can already expect something from them.

Monolith has 3 teams afaik, and they even opened up another studio last year. That they have done some technical work on Skyward Sword doesn't really prevent them from working on another game at the same time. Actually, they probably have at least 2 games in development right now.

I have serious doubts Nintendo want to make the Star Fox game we want to play. They seem to want Fox out of that Arwing, and they'll get him out by hook or by crook (even if it means hijacking an already in development title). After all, the characters have so much more potential than just being stars of a niche shooter game.

Then again, last I heard the 3DS remake of 64 didn't sell so well, so maybe the discouragement will convince them to just give the series to a Treasure or Platinum, have it developed at an appropriately low budget, and use it to silence the cries from us fans...or they could just retire the series altogether. :/

^^You're not just pessimistic, I feel the same way...we're both just pessimistic. But I think it's fair to assume with the increased time and budgets for HD games, that we can't pin any game down for launch for sure. My money is still on a Smash 1080p bundle with full network functions.

But is a decimated team really ready to show us their new game ? Did they get dev kits early enough ? Did they have enough time to use/modify/create a graphics engine for the new system ? If their project is similar in scope, can we already expect a reveal, especially with the increasing amount of work you have to put into HD games ?

You may be right, but I think it's legitimate to have doubts. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo gives once again 3rd parties a bit more spotlight and focusses on only a few games they have in store for Wii U. A new RPG by Monolith would certainly be glorious though.

Then again, I'm not even sure if I expect Pikmin 3. Maybe I'm just a bit too pessimistic.

Lord I hope not. Between Wii and 3DS Nintendo should have learned by now not to expect 3rd parties to do anything. It's up to them to make their hardware appealing. And if they do that and provide a friendly platform, then the 3rd parties will come.

Nintendo needs to come out this year with guns blazing and fully intent on building a base of gamers. 3rd parties don't need spotlight. They just need hardware that will sell to people who'll buy their games.

They've probably had Dev kits almost as long as Retro.
They've even had posts about developing on it.
I'm not saying it'll be a launch title, but I wouldn't rule out a teaser at E3.

Nintendo don't seem to think Monolithsoft mean anything to the West. They'll probably throw us a working title and maybe a few screen shots in that press packet they do every year if they have any interest at all in localizing the game.

I think they'll be able to show something, but the question is: "Will we really want to see it?" Those early Monado screens looked pretty bad and may have prematurely killed interest in the game for some of the more ignorant among us.
