Gurren Lagann - 08

B-b-but he's in the OP!!

Watch up to 11 NOW.

There's a fair bit of fanservice as well in this episode, and sometimes it's used rather skillfully. Lan's reflection is talking to Madoka in the mirror while the camera is zoomed in on something else.

Outside of the "magic" suit I really didn't notice much fanservice in this ep of Rinne no Lagrange. I think my recent viewing of Eiken has something to do with that ;_;

The Idolmaster 10-12

The Idolmaster 13

The fully animated dances were cool, but everything else was incredibly painful to sit through.

The Idolmaster 14

Is this really supposed to be a serious plot? Feels like a farce.

The Idolmaster 15

Most enjoyable episode since 9. Thanks to the variety show format, this episode managed to be fast paced and, well, varied. Some of the segments didn't work, but some did, most notably the amusing mecha sequence which was the whole reason I watched this far to begin with.

Next episode looks to be going back to the serious stuff, so I'm out. I think I've seen all I want of this show.

Bamboo Blade 21-26 - I don't think I actually wrote anything about the last few episodes of the series, even though I watched them right after the rest of it (when I was posting about it some days back)...

Anyway, the last disc of Bamboo Blade is the original arc, an arc that doesn't come from the manga. I'm not sure whether it's better or worse than the part of the manga that immediately follows the part that got animated (it was about 60 chapters I think?), but... it's got some issues. It's better than the last arc of the manga for sure, but still, it has some problems. This arc focuses on the relationship between Tomo and a rival girl created for the anime who also loves Blade Braver, except she likes Blade Braver's often rival Shinaider, not Braver himself. They meet, are both in the Blade Braver movie through some sillily unlikely coincidences, fight, etc.

In the end, Tomo loses to the rival girl, as was foreshadowed several times in earlier episodes. This doesn't happen in the manga for many, many chapters -- in fact, she doesn't lose to another high school girl until vol. 13, near the end of the abruptly cancelled series -- but the anime was about to end, so it makes sense to put something like that in. This rival probably is more interesting than the one in the manga too, and that one has several dozen too many chapters focused on her as well... but I've complained about the manga direction enough. Anyway, it mostly worked.

If I have any complaints about this part, the team's loss, and the following near dissolution of the team, were pretty contrived. Seriously, we're supposed to believe that they'd just all break up like that? Yeah... no. Also, it's kind of annoying that there's a six month timeskip between the second to last and last episodes. Basically, it's like there's this entire arc in between that they're not showing, so some things that the last episode focuses on, like the teacher coming back, etc, are made much weaker as plot points because, well, he just left at the end of the last episode... it wasn't exactly long ago, for the viewer.

On a related note, numerous times in this series matches are mostly skipped over, which is frustrating. It'd be nice to see more of the actual matches. But that'd require more episodes than a show like this would ever get, sadly enough. :(

Overall, very good show, definitely watch it. It's just too bad that neither it nor its spinoff Bamboo Blade B ever got another anime.

Kill Me Baby 2 - This episode is about on par with the first one, that is, mediocre. As with that episode it had a few maybe funny parts, some borderline slightly amusing stuff, some stuff that wasn't too interesting, and a whole lot of "Wow, these characters, and the MC in particular, sure are STUPID!". I mean, seriously, this MC is brain-hurtingly stupid. The art style, which makes these supposedly high school girls look like they're maybe eight or ten years old, doesn't help either, but at least the characters look about as old as they act... but I',m sure that's part of the joke.

I don't think anything in this episode was quite as silly as the ninja part of ep. 1, but still even though the show's not really good, I'm just amused enough to keep watching anyway.

For people not watching it, ep. 2 has jokes about stuff like playing tag and the MC being forgotten because she hides too well, etc.

Bodacious Space Pirates 2 - I really like this show. Seriously, this is most likely my favorite new show of this season, of the ones I've watched so far. I can see why some people would dislike the somewhat slow pace the show has, but I think it works fine. This episode is every bit as good as the first episode. The MC is great, she's a likable character and is clearly a good leader. Sure, some elements of her are generic anime MC (the cluelessness) or anime girl (working at a cafe where she dresses like a maid), but there was more of that in the first episode; in this episode we better see why she's the lead character.

As for the episode, it's broken into two parts, roughly. In the first part it shows the ending of the scene that finished ep. 1, followed by the MC and her mother going off into an uninhabited area for some weapon practice. This scene is pretty good, the two of them interact well and have a good relationship.
Impressive gun too, giant laser blast!

The second part shows the school's Yacht Club going on a real space excursion. The whole club of girls, and their new adviser guy, are going to space!
I assume that that other guy on the station the guy is talking to is another pirate, this one as a contact on the station?
They clearly know what they're doing in getting the ship ready for its trip, too. I like that the show doesn't just skip over the preflight part, as most any other anime like this probably would, but instead makes it an important part of the series as well. It's a slightly more realistic direction than usual. Of course this is very far from a realistic (or serious) series, but still, it makes for a somewhat different episode, and I at least think it works well. The major conflict -- of what the MC decides to do once she learns that
they're being hacked by another ship in the station
-- was well told. She's a leader indeed. She may not know precisely what to do, but she's decisive and is going to try anyway. Good stuff.

Oh, and as far as the whole pirate/privateer thing does, this episode again reinforces the idea that the government's on their side, for sure. These clearly are not "pirates" (privateers) this planet's government has issues with. I just want more of an explanation why, but I assume it's still forthcoming.

Overall, this is just such a fun show to watch... I really like it, both in characters and plot. The visuals are solid as well. (The magic skirts were kind of silly of course, particularly given that it's in zero gravity on the ship, but eh... why not, I don't care really.) Yeah, it's good stuff. It's a light series, sure, but a good light series, and not entirely predictable, as ep. 2 shows. If it stays this good, I'll be wishing for this to be a multi season show at this rate... but given the usual luck with such things... eh, who knows, it could happen, maybe. It's just ... fun, I don't know a better word for it.

I thought it was nice that she managed to hold onto her banana parfait during the action and finish it off. Chiaki and Marika make a nice team. Curious of what Kane McDougal is doing, thought he, Ririka, and Misa ought to be trying to get her prepared to be a captain.
Well yeah, you're not going to let a great parfait like that get away just because you're running away! :)

Moretsu Pirates 02

An episode or two devoted to electronic warfare, instead of jumping into wacky pirate hijinks? Colour me impressed, most anime seems to gloss over hard science fiction elements like that.

Yeah, I agree. I wasn't expecting something like that, given the first episode, so it was a nice surprise.

I am open to the idea of Bodacious Space Pirates, but what's here just...isn't fun. The characters are unmemorable and uninteresting. Each of them has nothing to say, and no memorable features. They kind of try to be stereotypes, but they are so generic and lifeless that they fail to even become anything more than figures that belong far off in the background.

Worst of all the show is plodding along at the worst speed, and nothing of any significance has really happened in the two episodes so far. And the things that actually do occur in the show are just rendered uninteresting by the very vanilla flavor of the show. Like, how are mini-skirts in zero-g this boring? How do you mess up something like that? There is just no spark or creativity to the show, and the awful CG certainly doesn't help in that regard. All I can see when I watch this show is some sad staff member sitting down at a desk and thinking, "Ughhhhhhh, another day slaving away at this stupid space pirate show."
I don't think there's anything here I could agree with at all, as my review above should make clear. Well, you are right that the pacing is a bit slow, but that's because they want to put in some detail and not just skip from action scene to action scene, and fortunately they know how to do the slow scenes well too, because this was a great episode.

I started Hiroshima in Morning a while back, and I was so disinterested that I ended up reading The Great Game: The Struggle for Empire in Central Asia instead. That in turn was a rousing read, full of daring men doing awesome shit, set against a cold war of sorts that the British were locked into with Russia for continental control. Anyone who's fond of badass histories should look into it.

I'll probably start Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann next.

I have The Great Game, and yeah, it is a good book. It's definitely a subject that you almost never see mentioned, which is part of why it's good... a fair amount of the stuff it covers isn't stuff even I knew much about, for the most part.

Yep. Although YKK moreso, because they are basically living through the extinction of the human race.

It's top-tier mono no aware, yes, but I've said before how much I dislike some things about that premise, for sure.

Record of Lodoss War - 1

http://www.abload.de/img/mpc-hc2012-01-1419-49kcpik.jpg

I have now all my anime DVDs and some VHS cassettes (even I have no VHS player anymore), so I can watch all the classics. Who needs new animes?

The opening song is classy - http://youtu.be/p2vxlZkfW-Y
Nice animations especially for people with a faible for hair animations.
Lodoss War is okay, but it's so, so cliche... I've never really been a fan. I mean, it's okay, but nothing really special.

I adore the ED. Was the tv series any good? I've had the dvds forever but never bothered to watch it.

I don't think the TV series is too much worse than the original, but I'm not exactly a huge fan of the original either, so...

I really look how NOT-CLAMP the Blood-C movie looks; definite improvement over the Clampish look of the TV show. The more we get away from Clamp's style, the better.

%5Banimepaper.net%5Dpicture-standard-anime-blood-c-blood-c-picture-226523-suemura-preview-09cf00ed.jpg

Definitely an improvement in art design there, and maybe more like classic Saya?

eiken 2 end

yeah, i think i'm done with watching terrible shows for a while... well, at least until the next ep of guilty crown airs.

... Why did you watch the second one? I know I watch bad shows sometimes, but Eiken's a bit much even for me...

Ground Goku Arjuna 2

They can't even go without air conditioning for two weeks in the summer, such filthy fools.

To be fair SPOILERZMisato and AsukaSPOILERZ get in on that action as well, just not as much.
so classy

Kill Me Baby 1

Not only did I not laugh, once, but my ability to process humour may have been so irreparably damaged that I might not ever laugh again.
should've just stuck to watching the ED on youtube

i just had to see how bad it could get... i don't think it was worth it.

Ano Natsu de Matteru: The most anticipated show of the season, and it doesn't disappoint. Take the artist and writer of the Onegai series coupled with the director of AnoHana and the result is a pure romantic comedy/drama reminiscent of a time when such things could still be awesome. With a premise that is essentially Onegai Teacher: The Remake, one can definitely see that J.C. Staff pulled out all the stops in making this series tug on the nostalgia strings of viewers of series. From putting I've Sound in charge of the music, to having the opening song emulate the musical themes of the original series, to even recreating the key characters that exemplified the original Onegai Teacher (and in Lemon's case, using the same seiyuu as well!), they made it clear what their objective was. For those who enjoyed those series, it's akin to stepping into a time warp. The easiest complaint that could be levied against the series is that it does nothing new, and is a pitiful attempt at using a blueprint 10-years old in order to replicate its success for the new generation... but who cares? For the old, it's a type of storytelling that has been too long forgotten, and for the new, it is a chance to finally see how the genre is meant to be done.
Taraku-desgned high school students making a movie also reminds me of another work from more than 10 years ago.

Just letting you guys know that I'm turning in my mancard for review and possible termination.

I can't marathon Sailor Moon. Before you repossess my balls, please recall that I successfully marathon'd RahXephon, Black Lagoon, Macross (everything), Yu Yu Hakusho, Lain, Last Exile, Full Metal Panic (everything), Baccano, Crest/Banner of The Stars, and LOGH. This last failure does not define me.

Hunter x Hunter R 15

It's really amazing how much the tension has been toned down. Looks like next episode might fix that though. Really hope so because this is one of the most intense moments in the series.

That was just recently.

Blue Gender, Ippo, Gundam stuff, Kenshin, Geass, TTGL, Elfen Lied... All I watch is marathons. And it can't possibly be healthy.

Nothing made me more bitter than RahXephon though.

Hmm, LOGH is huge. You can keep your card this time.

Rinne no Lagrange 2

It is nice to have a character that's not entirely angst, and/or revenge based, as awesome as they are when done right, but the flipside is kind of annoying. There's no rhyme or reason to Madoka's actions, no motivation, and it's making the whole show seem incredibly awkward. She's told to do, and she does with a giggle, smile, and a knock on the head.

In one sense, it's the more natural of portrayals; a 14-15 year old girls against an interstellar organization is going to have almost no say, and get but the most filtered of info, but she doesn't even ask for that much. She's not just genki, she's dull.
It's implied
she treated piloting the mech as yet another sport, and her reason to continue piloting was merely out of obligation to repay that favor.

Now whether or not it's an acceptable reasoning is another thing.

The show makes it pretty clear she's piloting the Vox Aura because it shot her in the ass when she was drowning 10 years ago and she remembers that she's more or less bound to it, and it to her now. Though she wasn't privy to the conversation, when they were talking about it in the control room, they specifically said that once "Memoria" is established between Vox and pilot, only that person can pilot it from that point forward.

I get some Xenoglossia vibes from the relationship that Madoka has with her giant robot. I'm guessing this robot won't be Madoka's boyfriend though.

You're missing the point. What is the reasoning/motivation for why Madoka agrees to pilot it in the first place, not why she can pilot it.
