Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions thread [Up On 360/Origin/Steam/U.S. PSN]

I brought my xbox to my bloody girlfriend because of my lack of internet back home, just to download this demo, and I cannot find it on xbox live. It shows 'Reckoning Demo', but when I click on it it doesn't show 'TRIAL' anywhere. It just gives a description of the game.

I am in Europe and what is this?!

edit: seriously, anyone else had this problem? or is it a regional lock one, or do i need to restart my video gaming console, or what?

I actually like the graphical style and quality; I've never played WOW or Fable since the first game, so I'm far from saturated on it.
The glitchy audio and dialogue system are a big concern though. I didn't finish the demo due to this and after Skyrim, I don't want another game I can't enjoy due to bugs. If it runs well on PS3 I'll buy it for sure, but where can you find that out prior to launch, and who can you trust these days?

First review is in:

Ohhh, what's the word with Never Dead?!?! Really curious about that one.

On topic: finished this morning, and it's definitely fun. I actually like the limited options on the character creator. Most of the time I can't really tell if my goddamn cheekbones are higher or lower, or if my forhead is short or tall. I had a sweet sexy sailor sneak slasher.

Artwork is colorful and fun, but is a bit too 'cutesy' for my tastes. The gnomes reminded me more of Gwildor from the Masters of the Universe movie than something I could take seriously.

Combat is fun, and looks like it gets pretty deep when you start to unlock all of the moves and what not. And it definitely looks to have potential to mix-and-match playstyles to come up with unique combos and approaches.

It definitely has the depth of a Skyrim with all of the skill attributes and crafting options, but I'm just not terribly interested in getting sucked into another EPIC ADVENTURE™ with Mass Effect 3 right around the corner.

Have you an xbox gold sub?

Is anybody bothered that you can't jump?

For combat purposes - a little.

For moving around - not really. Didn't come across many times where I felt the complusion to jump to get over something or anything. EDIT: Oh wait, yes I did. Ok, it bothers me a little now.

Not enough that I'd say it detracts from the experience, though.

The one thing that horribly bothers me about this game is that you can't see all your equipment at once. You just have the last weapon you used on your back and your shield pops out of nowhere.

Is anybody bothered that you can't jump?

Before trying the demo I thought it would make the game unplayable for me. (I tend to always jump in games) But it didn't because there's rolling. And console version already uses every button on the pad, there's no room for it.

But still, I have to say I'll be bummed if the sequel doesn't have a jump button.

I think what excites me is that on top of there being a lot to love already, there is huge potential to be truly great. I was never expecting it to be some perfect game that reinvented the wheel, just a fun and addictive new action RPG that has it's own vibe. Based on the demo, it seems like it will more than live up to that for me and will fill in the blanks that I always hoped the Fable series would, but never did.

but it's not one button combat unless you make it that way.

I played for the full 45 minutes as a stealth mage with bow and staff and you HAVE to use primary, secondary and magic combined. Also the more you level up the deeper the combat gets. Definitely not one button combat.

I died once and was able to immediately "resurrect". This mechanic was just for the demo right? Please someone tell me the retail game won't handle death in such a trite manner.

The demo was everything I hoped it would be. I feel as if following this game from it's outset has not been a waste of time.

Probably a quick bandaid to get around not being able to save.

That's just for the demo, since you can't save during it. A dev on twitter confirmed it.

Yes! Any third person game without a jump button just feel completely wrong to me. Not sure why, but it only bothers me in third person games.

We are opposites, you and I. 3rd person non-jumping is fine, but not being able to jump in FPSes and similar games (like in Bulletstorm) bothers me a lot.

Reminds me of Fable with better combat, but with a worse camera. I still think I will pick it up, but if Syndicate came out the same day I would rather get that since Amazon has $20 credit when you preorder that.

after playing the PS3 demo and PC demo, I think I'll go with PS3 version. the game felt like it's designed around controller rather than mouse+keyboard and I don't really like playing PC games with controller, it just didn't feel right for me.

also, the artstyle makes the difference between PS3 and PC version not that apparent, and PS3 framerate is good enough that I'm fine with it.

Seems decent enough but the art style and animations just aren't doing it for me. Going to give it another go tonight and see if it grows on me, but so far it's a rental at best.

Damn what a disappointment. Probably the ugliest game I've seen in a long time. A lazy looking semi-cartoony aesthetic with lousy assets, garish color everywhere, and so much bloom it's like a parody of bloomy games.

Really enjoyed the demo. Definitely seems like a mix of Fable, with some wow and elder scrolls thrown in. I like the art style and graphics. Looking at the Fate system I really appreciate that I get rewarded for mixing the different roles. Pretty cool idea that will probably lead to lots of replays.

Funnily, what sold me on the game was the fact that hitting the block button cancelled me out of any attack animation I was in. There are full on action games that don't allow you to do that, so I can't say I was expecting that in this RPG that just happens to have active combat.

That's totally great.

youre playing the game on a monitor/tv. using controller. what's not to feel right. it's like playing on console. lol.

Yeah I forgot to put that as one of my negatives. If they're aiming for an action game type combat system for a wrpg how can you NOT have a jump button?

I agree i didn't like the look of it at all. The tutorial dungeon was very unappealing looking but so was the outdoor area. I still maintain my stance that it looks like an early generation 360 game.

I've said this before in the previous thread, but what the game feels like to me especially now having had a taste myself is a game where a bunch of devs who love RPGs got together, took most of the best parts of other games in the genre, added great combat, a beautiful world, and a so far interesting lore. In my opinion it makes it unique in it's way, I can't think of another RPG that has all of these combined elements.

The combat is great in my opinion, but if your coming at this game as more a fan of action games you might be disappointed only because this is not supposed to be a DMC/Bayonetta/ God of War style action game. It's a hardcore RPG with responsive action combat (meaning your stats/gear/destinies all matter). I suspect the way the animations are handled was probably the best way to balance the combat/stat crunching and actually make the character stat progression matter. My favorite weapon so far in the demo was the Chakrums, but I also enjoyed the War Hammer, and Daggers. Really want to try to Fae Blades, and Great Swords though as my current plan is to go Chakrums and Great Swords. Really looking forward to seeing how combat feels at a respectable level with lots of abilities and weapon moves unlocked.

The lore to me is interesting, but if you are not, or was never a fan of R.As previous work then this probably won't change your mind. He's popular, and in my opinion a good writer if you like the types of stories he writes, but he's safe. In this reguard I see him as kind of a comfert food for the genre. I ran into quite a few interesting quests in my short time with the demo.

I love the art style, and atmosphere. In the demo I came across an old ruin, when I walked in there was a thick fogg in air, some bandits where hidden inside the fog with a small camp set inside. Beyond them were some little creepy looking brownies. Each group of enemies fought differently then the last. The demo was filled with cool little world touches, the bright neon plants that would grow as you approach them, the little sprites flying around in the air. The armors/weapons looked cool and I only reach level 3 in the demo.

Tons of random, and unique loot to be had, nice varitey in quests, some fetch, some genuine, some kind of funny. Massive world, Lots of lore/ world knowledge to dig into some of it more interesting then others of course but that comes with the territory of having so much of it. Same goes with the Voice acting, with every single line of text other than the main character being spoken it's bound to be hit or miss, and I like that "MY" character does not speak, I don't want to be Nolan North again.

The Camera is my one major gripe like most at the moment, but I also find that the more I play it gets alittle less irritating. Still a fix would be great.

All in all it's pretty much the game I wanted it to be, It feels better to play then Skyrim did, BHG handles loot so much better then Beth. The lore seems more interesting to me then most TES games. I feel like this a better RPG than Biowares made in a long while aswell, and I actually like Mass Effect, and DA:O. It's going to get some critisim from people saying it copies this, or copies that, but many of the best games i've ever played have been games that borrowed concepts from others, and combined them, or made them better in a way that felt meaningful.

Got a long ways to go to render any kind of Final judgement on the game, but right now all I can say after playing the demo is as long as they fix/can fix. Some of these seemingly small bugs present in the demo, and maybe take a look at that camera, it's going to be a great game to get lost in for awhile.

Really liked the demo. For people familiar with Salvatore and Drzzt books, is this any way connected or similar? I've got a friend who's a huge fan of the books and might be convinced to play this if it's similar, would be nice to get him off a shooter binge.

If your asking specifically if characters from his books will be in this then sadly no, this is not tied in with D&D in that aspect. However R.A created the lore/history of the world this takes place in and is the reckoning narrative "Visionary" at 38 studios.

Not going to lie, as much as I love Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls in general, this game blows it away in the gameplay department. All while still being just as much of an RPG. On that note, looting is much better as well because I can compare, junk and replace on the fly. Even further, it seems as if the gear will also be better and have more variety.

The Elder Scrolls is still godly to me, but I have to be honest here. This is going to be a great game that I think will stand on it's own merits. It has a lot to prove before it can reside with the giants, but I still can't wait for it and am sure I will enjoy it for what it brings to the table either way.

lol. "it's too brown!" "it's too colorful!" Some people just can't be pleased.

Need to release a game where the player can pick the game palette to their liking, like they're shopping for a new car. "Ooh my new FPS is red with brushed aluminum and matte black, no bloom" "Mine has rainbows, specular and more lights than you can shake a stick at!"

That might be enough to convince him. Thanks!

I downloaded the PC demo last night and was at a locked 60 FPS up until you meet that Gnome guy in his lab or whatever that was - and as soon as I walked into that room it tanked to 12-15 FPS. It stayed that way through the boss fight and then out into the first open area of the game after the dungeon.

Has anyone else had this happen? It was perfect performance up until then. I alt+tabbed out and back in, tried disabling crossfire (have 6990), and even restarted the whole thing and it still happened at the same spot ????

Thoughts so far:

-Graphics remind me of WoW, but they are inoffensive and colorful
-Mage seems to be a lot of fun, moreso than the Bow/stealth/warrior types
-Music was OK I guess - thinking back, none of it stands out to me now....
-Load times are fast for me, less than 5 seconds
-Menus/UI are very plain and buttons seem unresponsive at times.
-CAMERA!!! The way it moves is disorienting, and the biggest gripe I have with the game so far is easily the fact that I can't zoom out from my character. That single change would make a huge difference in my enjoyment. I like the camera pulled back quite a bit farther than it is in this game
-No jump button = sad but not game breaking
-Story is OK so far, not great not horrible but it's really early

Sounds more negative than I think overall so far. I had a really good time with the game. If the camera is worked on and I can figure out what's causing the performance disaster, I'll be good to go!

I think I'll probably like it more than Skyrim to be honest. My biggest issue with WRPGs has always been the combat systems used in them. Fighting is ultimately what you do the most in just about any RPG and if that isn't fun, I start losing interest in the game very quickly.

I like the feel of the game so far but hate the art style immensely.

Wouldn't be surprised if they outsourced the art to someone cheap and basically said "idk make it like wow but not wow".

Feels like a nice combination of lionhead/bethesda games. Really hope the story isn't just cliche bullshit but it seems like it will be which is a big bummer as well.

That's totally great.

You can also cancel any attack animation with a roll.

Is everyone getting a small pause when hitting enemies or boxes? I'm not sure if my frame rate is getting messed up or if it's an intentional slowdown to add to the "impact" of hitting something.

It makes me nervous because War in the North did this too, but it turned out it was a rendering error on all ATI cards, and some of the later hit effects made the game completely unplayable.

No, everything was very fluid for me on the PS3 demo. Only issues I had was the audio dropping and dialogue auto-skipping/fast-forwarding in most conversations. These are minor issues and are supposed to be fixed, though.
