The Skin I Live In

All I can say is wow. The second best movie of last year. I'm stunned.
Aw yeah, great movie. I love reading people's reactions, good and bad. I think it might be my second favorite of Almodovar's that I have seen, though I will have to watch it at least once more to be sure.

Anyway, I watched Che earlier today. I was going to write up a long post about why I think it both succeeds and fails as a biographical film, but now I'm too lazy so I'll just say that I can appreciate Soderbergh's unconventional approach to the genre which throws the viewer right into the action to witness the day to day activities of a revolutionary, but I think that's the main reason it fails on many levels, as it never attempts to provide any sort of insight into Che's mind or context for his actions. Also, the film kind of quits telling a story after the climax in Cuba and the narrative take a jarring shift to Bolivia without exploring any of the interesting political ramifications of the revolution; it crawls along for the next two hours or whatever until Che is finally killed. It was a fun watch, but I think there was a lot of potential here to make a great movie where Soderbergh only created a tolerable one. I read that Malick was at one point attached to write and direct this project but didn't due to financing issues; that would have been interesting. Oh, and I do wonder how many more Che t-shirts were purchased by teenagers after this movie came out, for it does glorify his actions quite a bit. *** out of five.

The Next Three Days 4.5/5

One of my favorites. I foresee watching it again often. Tense, well crafted emotional performances, and a great ending.

Recently watched:

Unforgiven - Probably the most realistic western. All the characters have believable personalities, there is no real hero, it is a violent situation in the chaos of the old west. Each one handles the violence and brutality of the situation differently. A very dry movie except for the climax. I'm not sure I like it. The young partner is like my personal Jar-Jar Binks of westerns.

TMNT 2 - So 80s. The facial animatronics are hilariously bad. The action is simplistic and the jokes are corny but fuck its TMNT. I can't but help but love movies from the 80's and early 90's.

The Man From Nowhere - This is my shit. The lighting and the clarity of the shots are so good. The story is standard revenge/hero/action trope pulled off expertly. The action is just a bit too cut up, but makes up for it with its badassery. Highly recommended if you like stuff like oldboy and taken.

Defendor - A movie about a mentally handicapped superhero wannabe starring Woody Harrelson. A little bit of funny, a little bit of wtf, and little bit of drama, a little bit of sad. I liked it.

From Paris With Love - The most suprising movie for me. An action movie that owes more to the prime 80's/90's era of action. Shit just goes down nonstop. Travolta is way more tolerable than the trailers made me believe. I'll just throw a troll out there and say this is a way better spy action thriller than ghost protocol.

Watched Billy Wilders Sunset Boulevard and double indemnity for the first time in my life. I have to say, both are pretty brilliant. Personally I prefer sunset because I really liked how the humor and the drama were in constant Interplay.

Sunset Blvd is one of my favourite movies of all time. Wilder is the man. Nancy Olsen is also gorgeous in the film.

can anyone recommend atmospheric asian movies a la wong kar wai or lost in translation maybe

I saw Lust, Caution (2007, directed by Ang Lee) fairly recently and liked it quite a bit. Espionage film set during WWII in a China occupied by the Japanese army. Very beautifully shot. It is rated NC-17, don't know if that's an issue for you, but an R-rated cut also exists. On Netflix Streaming.

Funny Games (1997) - I liked it. The character of Paul's self-awareness was cool.
The long almost tedious scenes after the first big event were unexpected.

Haneke's comments that he was just trying to make a message by making an ultraviolent (which it isnt even) film which is otherwise completely pointless is a bit worrying but whatever.

I might watch the remake eventually for Naomi Watts.

Arriety (Studio Canal Blu-ray)

Lovely film. Have only watched the English dub so far, will watch the Japanese one soon.
Gorgeous GORGEOUS film, loved the OST also. My only gripe is that the ending was abrupt.

Now to watch Whisper of the Heart!

The Naked Kiss (1964)

I was expecting a racy, low-budget, neo-noir given the films rating and ended up bitterly disappointed. Turns out it's just about a former prostitute working in a children's ward
and it received its rating for glazing over the theme of child molestation
. I'm not sure if it was progressive for its time or not, I mean there's nothing explicit and it is pretty poorly written. It's all just very boring, I got nothing out of it. I had read that the director, Simon Fuller, influenced a good deal of film-makers but I don't see it from this film.

Never watch a film based on its posters, rating or taglines.

You should give Pickup on South Street a chance. It's a really excellent noir. His other films that i've seen including Naked Kiss didn't leave me with a lasting impression.

Heat

That was such a well-made movie. I loved everything about it. Mainly the characters. All of them were strong, well written and acted. I believed every single one. They were perfect for their oles.

I watched this after I kept hearing how good the shootout scene is, and it did not disappoint at all. the gun sounds were incredible.

Fuck, I want another movie like this.

The Future - *** 1/2
I settled on a more positive note on reflection. I decided that it is a pretty bold meditation on the road of relationships that is wrapped in a faux science fiction setting that is quite well done. As mentioned earlier, the film does indeed have my favorite minute of cinema in the year in it.
Night Nurse - ***
Quite funny and I can understand why you picked this film for me swoon for I can see bits of pieces that Guy Maddin could have taken from this for Tales of the Gimli Hospital. I wish the third act kept the tone of the first 2/3s but ah well.
The Draughtman's Contract - **** 1/2
One of the most original, playful, and intelligent mysteries I have quite ever seen and despite not having the amazing photography of Sacha Vierny in his later films and is not my favorite Nyman score for a Greenaway film (does have some great moments) but prefer the more repetitive mathematical minimalist takes on baroque than this more grand gesture, I still fell instantly in love with this feature like every other Greenaway feature I have seen so far. Greenaway takes costume drama period pieces to the brink of parody but it feels it is only there to heavily disguise this heavily guarded and well thought out conspiracy mystery with its absurd humor.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - * 1/2
Easily featuring the worst score of the year which is the music equal of a garbage casserole, Tinker Failure feels short, odd paced, and heavily glossed over. I see no significance in any of the performances either but I will give Tinker Failure this, some of the photography is nice but most with the details flowing in each frame but not so much with the abilities of the camera.
A Serbian Film - *
Poorly acted and misguided, A Serbian Film has the blocks to being an interesting thriller but is drenched in complete 8th grade politics idiocy, it is hard to see otherwise. A Serbian Film is dumb enough that it thinks it is gracefully guiding us over the edge while the true tastemakers are sitting on top of fuck mountain aiming their spit on its pink helmet handicrap.
Super 8 - **
A rewatch and it just wasn't that fun this time and the Spelberg nostalgia is mostly incompetent and uninspired.
Heart of Glass - ** 1/2
A failed experiment but an experiment worth taking. Felt a bit too simple and trying to convey meaning out of random words way too much. It does have my favorite Popol Vuh score even though it wasn't used enough.
Carnage - ** 1/2
The opening theme is nearly unbearable, the sound mixing during the film is mostly intolerable, the shifts of lightning during shots is unforgivable, the dialogue feels like a babelfish translation, but damn if the acting foursome tries their best out of what is given to them. Satisfying even though a better film could be made out of it even though I don't think it could have been better performed (except perhaps Kate Winslet who has a somewhat unconvinced drunk).
The Iron Lady - *
Margaret Thatcher cleans her room and has flashbacks (and flashbacks within flashbacks) in what is probably one of the most unintentional funny films of the year. However Jim Broadbent has a goofy charm that is admirable and the make-up is somewhat convincing even though the film all around is an awfully directed mess that has no shame in using outdated video effects.
The Lady Vanishes - **** 1/2
Haven't seen this in a really long time, I forgot how hilariously witty and tense this film was. This year I am revisiting a lot of Hitchcock just because most of them I haven't watched since early high school.
Schlock - **
Mostly fun early John Landis film that I wish would often go further in bizarreland that it often teases.

collateral!

the ending's not that good, though.

I caught The Descendants a few days. Another average but enjoyable family drama from the Cloonemeister General. Don't quite understand why him and his moves keep getting nominated for awards though.

Thanks guys.

Caligula sounds interesting. Is it completely out there or does it have "conventional" storytelling? Pics look intriguing.

Besides Collateral, I would suggest Miami Vice (also by Mann) or maybe The Town (by Affleck)

Best scene in CALIGULA:
the wall of death.

I watched that when I was in high school. Pretty amazing thing to see at that age.

In class?!?!?

I LOVE nudity!

Penetration and cumshots, too!

True story: I saw it in the theater when it was re-released in the late 90s. Went with two female friends, felt like a pimp, because most of the audience was solo dudes. Guy in front of us whips it out and starts jerking it. I kicked the back of his chair. He stopped, but stayed for the rest of the movie.

What a pig.

Okay I am off to video store.

why would it be a neo-noir? and it is a racy low-budge noir that is one of the best directed and realized movies of all time. i suggest if you rewatch things like taxi driver/midnight cowboy/breathless you'll find fuller's fingerprints on pretty much everything.

i can't fathom anyone finding it boring.

i'm fairly positive that opening shot is the best thing in movie history. and it has a nice call back to it at the end. and it was borrowed for like every movie made in the 70s. but yea yr right about the last 1/3. but i love it anyway.
