Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions thread [Up On 360/Origin/Steam/U.S. PSN]

Yeah, Curt does not really come off as a PR guy honestly, read any number of the posts he has made on their forums and I think thats pretty clear off that bat. Even before he got into making games and he was just a baseball player Curts always been pretty straight forward. I somewhat doubt most other devs would make a standalone deal (i'm sure against EAs wishes) to get the game on Steam just because fans wanted it.

I wish more developers were this enthusiastic about their games, and involved with their communities.
Curt is a pretty hardcore gamer. GET HIM A GAF ACCOUNT. :p

I never really got that impression. Now that you've mentioned it, I'll have to rewatch whatever interviews I've seen.

I'm not saying your wrong, I'm wondering if I just ignored the comparisons as the usual PR fluff.

In Game On's interview he compliments the games mentioned in your quote and says that "but elements from those have never been in the same game" or something along those lines, so I'd say they're pretty much mixing good parts from several titles to make theirs.

Really liked the combat quite a bit. It definitely did remind me of God of War when it came to watching the enemy behavior at times.

The only real downside for me was the introduction of the storyline. The opening moving felt like a rush. It almost seemed like they had a longer cutscene at one point to setup who these people are, but they cut it down for time. I love fantasy worlds, but there was no real hook for me to make me curious. The intro did not have be long, but what was really a mystery?

To those who are curious, Curt does post fairly often under the username Ngruk on the fohguild.org forums. There's a thread there for his upcoming MMORPG. Be warned, though, that forum is far past its prime and a lot of the remaining denizens are pretty awful.

The Treshers, and Kobolds/ Rogue Kobolds give me alot of confidence that we will be seeing some challanging beasties in the game. There are so many creatures types that are not present in the demo though, so I can only imagine whats lurking out there in Amalur.

The interesting thing about the Banshean in that concept art, is that she drops eggs that hatch and become murgan that fight with her.

The black hand is furor, isn't he. You probably can't say. I used to lurk there fairly regularly, until people who kept notes just ruined the board.

Oh FoH forums. Good times, good times.

I think it was posted earlier but I can't seem to find it so anyway.

Curt did an interview with the guys on Final Score: http://finalscoreshow.com/2012/01/there-will-be-a-reckoning/

Lots of good information on in this, heres a recap for those that don't care to listen to it.

-The demo of Reckoning that released last week was of a 3 month old build. This explains the various bugs present in the demo. Curt has said that the bugs aren’t present in the final build.

-Completionists will be delighted to know that the game clocks in around 200-300 hours if you really want to get and see everything that the world of Amalur has to offer.

-The first downloadable content for Reckoning will be released around the time that Mass Effect 3 comes out in March. This DLC will work on bridging Reckoning to the MMO tie-in, Copernicus, that 38 Studios is currently working on.

-EA told 38 that the DLC for reckoning was "Too Big", 38 went with it anway

-Certain monsters from Reckoning will be playable in Copernicus. (The MMO)

-The character of Amalur are meant to be memorable. You’re going to see them in the future, whether it’s in Copernicus, or even Reckoning 2.

-Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning 2 confirmed.

-Reckoning has gone gold.

-Reckoning will have advertisements during the Superbowl.

-Schilling will be on Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon to promote Reckoning.

-Special demos have been prepared for both shows.

-Schilling will be recording Kimmel’s show on January 26th, and Fallon’s show sometime next week. The air date of both of these episodes is currently unknown.

-To further promote Reckoning, 38 studios has given the 4-5 biggest live-streamers in the world a copy of Reckoning to stream on launch day.

-Speaking of launch day, GameStop will be holding a midnight launch for Reckoning, and Schilling will be at a midnight launch in Massachusetts.

So apprently the game has is well enough to get a midnight release thats promising, i'm also curious to know how the Superbowl ads happend. I don't think EA would push for that, so it makes me think that maybe Curt ponied up the dough for it. although i'm sure he has some connections in that field aswell so...

From Joe during the livestream -

- Talked more about the DLC being too big, and then said something like 10 hours each
- DLC will include new lands to explore, new enemy types, and new characters
- will link to the MMO in some way

From what Joe said, it sounds like the DLC is going to be like the Fallout: New Vegas DLC packs. He also said that the first DLC pack will have about 10 hours of new content.

I'm getting more and more excited for this game every day. Really the only game I'm looking forward to in the next couple of months.

Sounds like they are going balls to the wall with this game. You can hear the passion in Curt's voice when he talks about it, and as a gamer, that both excites and makes me want to play the game even more. Because it shows they actually give a damn and are intent on delivering a lasting experience and quality content.

Well I am now officially excited for Amalur. I picked up a wired 360 controller yesterday and played more of the PC demo exploring some other areas and abilities that I had not seen before. I think the action is fun and engaging and the art and enemy design is both familiar and inspired at the same time. I'm going with the Steam version because I'm already spoiled by the load times off my solid state hdd and I can see myself putting a great number of hours into the final product.

Now THAT is how you do dlc and promise people that they are about to get in on the dawning of a major series. Letting players know that the game, even if its already huge, is one they plan on releasing continuing content for of large sizes and that they can expect it to be more than a one-off title from them. Get your lore on people. This is a world we can expect to be immersing ourselves in for sometime.

That is going to be some expensive fucking marketing, good lord.

Who are the 4-5 biggest live streamers in the world? Day9 is probably one... TotalBiscuit?

I like the game the more time I put into it, playing both console demos gonna pick up PS3 version. The camera could still be better but combat is very good.

Yeah the more you play or put into this game the more it takes hold of you. It really gets addictive. Im up to four sessions through the demo and I'm still enjoying it. Can't wait for launch when I get out of the woods and see that big open sky. Looked great in the Ken Rolston stream and damn at fighting threshes and that venomous scorpion thing. Combat tactics are gonna be a seriously evolving element in this game.

Still getting the PS3 version, but I am going to go ahead and DL the 360 demo tonight and give it a go for comparison. Might as well, as the demo is like crack and I want to play it again anyway. Can't recall the last time I kept getting pulled back to a demo so much. The full game is going to be obscenely addictive.

Just played about 1 hour of the PC demo and I'm impressed. Combat is very satisfying, seems pretty deep too. I love the art style, sound is literally all over the place though, moving from the front speakers to the rear speakers in mid sentence, levels too low sometimes etc. I assume it'll all be fixed in the final build so I'm not worried. Overall I think I'll pick this one up once I've cleared the backlog a bit.
Hurrah for new IP's!

Played the demo again last night, something I don't normally do with demos.

Considering pre-ordering on steam, anyone know how big the download will be and if steam is pre-loading?

Off the top of my head, I think it's a 10.5 GB install. (yep, checked, the system requirements are "at least" 10.5 GB).

according to the system requirements Hard Disk Space: 10.5 GB

and the devs confirmed both Steam and Origin will have preloading

I'm kinda disappointed the game has fast travel, I really don't think it needs it. A couple of taxi services placed in key parts of the world map would have been more then enough.

That might be true, world seems pretty huge from world map so it would certainly need some kind of fast transportation at least. If the option was no fast travel, or fast travel anywhere, I would certainly still go with the latter.
