Apple iPad 2 |OT|

What confuses me is Japan. The Vita completely stiffed there, but they don't overwhelmingly buy Apple devices like the rest of the world does. I would be interested to hear what the dominant phone mfg/platform is over there, and how it compares to 3DS ownership.

I had a PSP, played the crap out of it, but once I got a Blackberry, I played it less and less. Once I got an iPhone, that was the PSP's death knell. It shocks me how much I use this iPhone.

That iPhone ownership really sold me on the iPad. What I really want, though, is an iPad mini. I'd like something just a bit bigger for reading, but not as huge as a regular iPad. My wife has an iPad 1, and it's kind of unwieldy for reading, which is my primary need.

I know that feel bro. I want a slightly smaller iPad with the rumoured specs of iPad 3. Shit ain't happening for a while though (if ever, Apple may never make an iPad Mini). Imagine the iPad 3's resolution on this:

As long as I can get a timely order in for a 32GB. Didn't the initial preorders for the iPad 2 grow to..like...4-6 weeks almost immediately? Can't remember.

Which is ironic seeing how the original PSP was intended to be a multipurpose device. It just wasn't really good at anything besides games.

Yeah iPad 2's were really hard to come by after launch, the ship times were high. I remember having to troll Futureshop.ca everyday to see if any became available in-store, then rush over there to pick it up. I'm hoping Apple has ample stock this time.

PSP was meant to do more than play games, but goddamn was it terrible at everything else. I remember trying to use it at launch as a MP3 player...painful.

The answer is you shouldn't be worrying about how you charge your iPad. There is no "correct" way to do it, other than avoiding frequent complete discharges and storing it for long periods with no charge.

What I mean is, partial charges don't count as a full charge. So it's not like topping up 10% 1000 times will deplete your battery. Even the stated 1000 charges is before your battery reaches 80% of it's initial capacity; so it's not like it will suddenly quit working.

Good point. Sony overshot the market, $250 dedicated handhelds is going to be hard sell. This isn't like when the PSP launched, the market is really different now. These general purpose devices (iPhone, iPad, Android) has really changed the gadget landscape.

Correct. PSV may be able to justify the $250 pricetag better than the 3DS did (due to better hardware), but it's still going to struggle at that price. I doubt either the 3DS or PSV will as successful as their predecessors. The market has changed drastically. Apple is eating up marketshare.

I disagree I think there's still a pretty good market for it and I would argue that the ipad is in a different market than the Vita anyway especially considering price, I don't think the Vita will have as big of problems, it's more competing with the Ipod Touch than the Ipad and I think it's pretty even.

Sony/PSP diehards and hardcore gamers, and not much else. Same goes for Nintendo and the 3DS.

iPad 3 delayed, coming out this summer. Vita's save.
Apple tends to release a week or two after annoucements, iPad 2 was annouced in March as well. iPad 1 is the exception because when its a brand new product they have a bigger gap from annoucement to release. When it's a revision they tend to only announce right before shipping.

Shipping in April. Bet on it.

Unless the announcement is the first week of March, in which case it will be the last week of March.

No chance there is a 4 week wait between it. Apple has never done that for a revision, they avoid doing that at all costs due to drop off in sales of the previous verision even with a price drop.

They won't break protocol for the first time ever for this. The max it will be is from the iPhone 4 annoucement to release since that also had Retina.

I'm just praying for an iPad 1 style release, where I can order online for a release date arrival. iPad 2's release was chaos by comparison...(at least in Canada).

I'll try to place my order as soon as the updated online store on the Apple page goes up. My hype level is through the roof right now. :(

I just got an iPad 2. Yay or Nay on screen protectors? I'm leaning Nay so far.

Couldn't hurt. I know a certain someone here will say it's not necessary, but I wish I got one for my OG iPad, because I have some (visible) scratches on the screen. Maybe the glass on the iPad 2 is much better, so what do I know.

Shipping in April. Bet on it.

Nooooo. April is too far away! Shut up! :(

I read that you're not supposed to use any kind of spray as it affects that oil-repelling coating they put on it. I just wipe mine with a lint-free cloth occasionally. All fingerprints just rub off, no liquids required.

It's like magic! I really don't understand actually... because the cloth doesn't appear to be getting dirty either....

yeah, especially when contrasted with Apple's 'smart' cover which accumulates dirt and leaves streaks on the iPad screen. ugh, disgusting.

Anytime we have to write scripts just to constantly check inventory and try to make it is ridiculous. I want the iphOne 4 launch again. Got it in the mail on release day. The future.

I have a feeling the iPad 3 launch is going to be way way way more crazy than the iPad 2 launch. iPad 1's launch was pretty low-key since people were still iffy on iPad. iPad 2's was crazy but...it seems like hype for iPad 3 is already way higher than after iPad 2 was revealed.

Tim Cook sounds like he thinks iPad is going to eventually fill all the needs MacBooks currents fill, at least enough where there would be no need for a ARM based Air:

Citi analyst Richard Gardner reported Cook reiterating his comment, originally made during the quarterly earnings conference call, that the market for tablets would eventually grow larger than the conventional PC market.

Apple doesn't refer to iPad as a PC, but as a "post-PC device," leaving the ARM-based tablet distinct from the company's Intel-based Macs. Gardner further indicated the meeting dispelled the notion that Apple might introduce ARM-based Macs, countering rumors that a new MacBook Air featuring an ARM processor might appear sometime soon.

Gardner cited Cook as alluding to "rapid innovation on the iOS platform" that will "significantly broaden the use case for tablets," and stated he "walked away from this meeting with the impression that Apple feels iPad satisfies—or will soon satisfy—the needs of those who might have been interested in such a product" as an ARM-based MacBook Air.

Speculation about a MacBook Air or other low end Mac models beginning to incorporate ARM processors has been fueled by rapid advances in ARM's chip designs as well as Microsoft's Windows 8 strategy that envisions future tablet and clamshell PC devices built around ARM chips rather than Intel x86 compatible processors that Windows has historically been tied to as a platform.

While Apple could deliver ARM based Macs, it appears the company is more focused on increasing the desirability of its existing iPad and leaving Macs as a higher end alternative rather than bringing them into directly overlapping use scenarios.

Didn't know where to post this exactly, but I need a bit of help. I've been reading a book on my iPhone/iPad with iBooks, taking notes, highlights, etc etc.

Problem now is, I need to quote some parts for an essay, which obviously needs to cite the page number. What the hell do I do? I don't have the physical book, so I can't know the actual page number.

Is there some way to deal with this?

If this isn’t “just talk” but instead truly indicative of where Apple wants to take the platform, I think it’ll be interesting to watch just how they'll build in more of the expectations one would have of Mac OS X on a laptop into iOS without making it overly complex for the mass audience.

Can’t wait to see iOS 6.

I have no idea how they could make iOS on the iPad interesting. Right now it's just an app launcher.

I've never understood this argument. My Mac is nothing but an app launcher.
Not really.

iOS works on the basis of programs performing tasks, and everything needed stays within that program.

OS X works with files, which come in various formats, and can be opened, created, and edited using any number of apps.

There's definitely a difference between the file management system and app-centricity. Still, I don't understand that argument either, tbh.

All true, but as an end user, the result is the same. I activate the Mac and launch apps. I activate the iPad and launch apps.

if Apple plans to expand iOS functionality to be more like Mac OS, as Cook implies, I’d say they’d focus on inter-app communication and data sharing first. that’s where I feel it’s very limited at the core level.

So, instead of having to install a safari bookmarlet to send something to omnifocus, I would be able to send a page or copied text to the app via context menus installed by omnifocus into the system. or an ability to extend the system keyboard outside the app itself.

I was impressed by windows 8 “agents”. that type of idea of safely handing off data and some services to a system designated app would work in iOS.

adding things like text expansion capabilities to a system wide level.

expanding the notifications system and adding more background multitasking APIs.

The actual springboard may not change for a long, long time but a lot of the guts that determine the limitations of apps will change.

Then maybe you should get a real PC?

Just kidding.

The difference is that you can do real multitasking on a PC. I'm looking at my monitors and can see my Twitter lists, my IM contacts, my e-mail, my browser and I can quickly access my music library at the same time, without having to switch between them. Well, I do switch between the apps with my mouse, but I don't have to interrupt my work/browsing/movie watching when I'm doing it.

And that's why, my dear crack addict with a tag, I refuse to consider the iPad as a "PC" and why FS apps on the PC are BS.

It's going to be interesting to watch the internet reactions when iOS eventually fully replaces OSX. It's bound to happen.
