[Anime] Your "Controversial" Opinions

I'm starting to stretch "controversial" but here's what I got left.

-Fafner is an absolute snore.
-Black Blood Brothers is one of the best vampire anime.
-Gankutsuou is boring.
-Gunslinger Girl has an awesome core concept despite its apparent ridiculousness.
-Kobato made me want to kill myself after 20 episodes.
-Michiko to Hatchin was terrible.
-Midori Days is charming, funny, and awesome.
-Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit is overrated.
-Ninja Nonsense is a fucking riot.
-I hate all yuri shows

That's all I got left and probably half don't qualify well.

Cutting me somewhat deep with the bolded. Cutting me really damn deep with the underlined.

Anyone remember Tramps Like Us? Shoujo manga from way back. It's the series that got me into manga. They had a lot of ads in Newtype USA. Newtype USA was so awesome.
The parts of it that weren't transparent PR pieces, anyway. Though, hey, I liked those DVDs. Turned my attention to several series I might not have otherwise checked out.

I think most people who have actually seen the series would agree with this. Or rather, that Gunslinger Girl executes an apparently ridiculous concept so well that it's awesome. It's a shame that the name, premise and advertising make it look like exploitative trash at first glance; otherwise it might get more of the recognition and praise it so richly deserves.

I see now that this thread has become a place to post terrible opinions. I mean, granted, I understand to a degree, but come on. It's like some of you just want to be controversial for the sake of being controversial. Next people are going to start saying Voices of a Distant Star sucked ass, in which case I'm bailing, because there's no hope for you people. It'd be like hating on The Lord of the Rings.

But everything Shinkai has done sucks ass.

What's wrong with hating on Lord of the Rings? That dude in Clerks 2 summed it up nicely.

Huh, I just realised that I didn't post any 'Controversial' opinions - I guess most of my opinions are in line with what the 'anime viewing populous' already agree with. Never the less.

-Monster is well paced.

-There's very little reason why your story needs to go on for 50 episodes or more - it's nearly inevitable that having a long show will just lead to inconsistent rubbish.

-The Berserk anime is superior to the manga.

-The Akira anime is superior to the manga.

- Koi Kaze is an excellent show.

- Gungrave is a bad show.

- Gundam: Stardust Memory is one of the worst things created by man.

- Zeta Gundam is rubbish too.

- (Many) of the films by Mamoru Oshii aren't too slow - you're impatient.

For the most part my opinions aren't "on the outside" of the anime community - and on the whole there aren't too many sacred cows that one could kill anyway. Even well loved titles have plenty of detractors.

But I thought Legend of the Galactic Heroes was like one of your favourite animes ever.

I've heard people claim that the Ranma dub is good, but whenever I've tried it all I hear is ear-bleedingly bad, so maybe that's controversial?

The Hobbit is infinitely better than Lord of the Rings. /non-anime controversial opinion

Yeah, I'll be the first to jump up and complain if I think a movie/show is unneccessarily slow (*cough*MONSTER*cough*) - I'm an impatient person - but I've never been bored by an Oshii film. He always makes taking the scenic route worthwhile.

@Mank: The Ranma dub was one of the first ones to be at least watchable, so it's looked back upon fondly by old-school fans, even if it really hasn't aged that well with nostalgia goggles taken off. Also some of the voices (e.g. Ryoga, Genma and Kuno) are genuinely good.

Not controversial and not really underrated.
Really? It gets a lot of hate by everyone.

If more shounen were like Soul Eater, I wouldn't be so down on them. Fun characters + good visuals + not 600000000000000000000000000000000000000 episodes + decent albeit slightly inconsistent direction = I'll watch this.

I find the majority of Anime to be disgusting and offensive and too often an excuse for people who enjoy pedophilia.

I've seen some stuff that's alright, but 95% of it is weird shit man.

[Anime] Your "Non-controversial" Opinions

Well, I got one based on this and the animegaf thread. School Days is shit even though I know some people are trolling.

Whaaaaaaattttttttttttttttttttttt????????

I would say that saying English is better than the original is pretty controversial when we're talking about anime. A lot of people generally hate dubs in Anime.

Soul Eater has a very slow moving first act. Like, really fucking slow. I dropped it around episode ten because I wasn't seeing the point, and I enjoyed shit like Shaman King.

Your username contains Star Wolf so I'm gonna assume you are a furry.

- Inuyasha is an enjoyable guilty pleasure albeit drawn out show.

- Hellsing has a more enjoyable dub than the Japanese original.

- Many shows have more enjoyable dubs than subs, especially in recent years.

- Gundam 0083 is my favorite gundam (dat intro theme is 90's-tastic)

- Baccano bored me to tears.

- (This one is regards to a great portion of the internet's opinion) Watching anime doesn't make you a pedo.

I think the dirty little secret of nearly every anime fan of a certain generation is that at one time in their life they liked Inuyasha.

It gets hate by the shounen haters because it is a very standard one. That doesn't mean it isn't popular as hell. It even sells well overseas.

And I could recommend a lot of shounen series for people that like Soul Eater. Off the top of my head: Getbackers, Ao no Exorcist, Flame of recca, Law of Ueki. All with 50ish episodes or less.

I think this is true as well (as I admitted in my opinion post). When I've gone to conventions I always hear people shitting on the show so adamantly, it just feels like attempts to bury their feelings under the rug or something.

I don't doubt there are people out there that dislike the show, don't get me wrong. I just think there are people out there that pile on it because it's one of the "cool things to hate" because it was so popular for a long time.

Replace that with Love Hina and you might have a point.
How about "and/or"? Though I think the Love Hina generation is slightly older than the Inuyasha generation.

Also, in total fairness Inuyasha actually did start out alright, before Takahashi completely lost her shit and decided never to try at anything again.

Neer liked Inuyasha, sadly I have to admit that at least upon first viewing I some how enjoyed Love Hina.

Granted since then that has changed and I can longer stand it, though I do think the Manga is much better then the anime.

Standard shounen doesn't have the artstyle/visual quality/general good quality of Soul Eater though.

;_;

Certainly controversial, I'll give you that.

I think in a few years there'll be more people on my side though. I mean, people used to talk about it as the greatest gundam/real robot show of all time, nowadays people seem to realise that Tomino is, well, erratic.

Zeta Gundam is awful in the most amazing ways. That pacing & editing is out-of-this-world bad. Perhaps literally. Maybe Tomino is an alien and we just don't understand his ways.

I left Soul Eater somewhere between 30 and 35, but I had a great time with the stuff I watched. It had a great cast, a fun, exaggerated world, and pretty good pacing. The progression was logical, and the fights made sense in terms of how relatively strong characters were.

I couldn't really imagine it improving from the end of the arc under the school, so I left it behind.

I will give Inuyasha a little bit of acknowledgement for bringing back into anime (I watched Cardcaptors and Sailor Moon at least as a child, but didn't think "this is anime"), but yeah outside of a handful of points it's pretty awful, made all the worse by its massive size. The beginning is still okay and I can see how I started getting into it, but eventually forgets what it's doing and goes into an infinite loop.

And the ending is really, really terrible considering the build up they were giving it.

I agree with one, two and six, but either disagree or have no horse in the race about the others.

Speaking of Berserk, though, I think the pacing of the manga has generally been just fine.

Well that's how it often appears when one reads in retrospect - but as he comes out with 20 pages every 3 months it can be quite painful to read. Plus, the anime version lacks a great deal of the graphic and gratuitous rape scenes.

The entire argument for its supposed "greatness" seems to come from the ending. Even if you want to say that is great, everything prior to that just isn't good, specifically characters. Basically the entire lot is crazy. You'll have characters just change everything on the drop of a dime, go against what they were doing, and just do stupid shit that makes no sense.

I disliked both Trigun and Evangelion upon first viewing, and will never watch them again

Also, One Piece is a little too over the top for me.

I loved pretty much every minute of it. It's hard to counter the arguments against it based solely on memory though. Haven't seen it since the Blu-Ray's came out.

I'll say this: It has a ton of Char. Anything with a ton of Char is a masterpiece.
