It's kickstarter's limit. It says on DF's website that you can donate more you just have to deal with them directly through their emails.
Well, in that case Notch can claim the one million dollar donation reward.

But it's not really a business transaction and the game does not need to suit everyone's taste. And yes, less known developers have to shown the actual concept if they want to collect money this way but if they continue to work on their reputation I'm sure they'd be able to pull off something similar after 20 years and a number of released excellent games. Not at all, but this is a business after all, so certain formality should be observed. I don't think there is anything wrong in fans being prudent by expecting a pitch to contain more than just a concept. People haven't even taken into account basic things like the setting, and I doubt you can honestly say that out of the 14000+ contributors everyone will be 100% on board with a space zombie theme (or whatever they end up with)![]()
Notch wanted to donate more, but 10k was the limit.
He chose the 5k prize though: he doesn't want to be in the game, just play it...he'd rather have the painting.
It's releasing on Steam, so you'd probably get the Mac version if/when it comes out there.
it kind of already HAS worked out well for them.I'm not into adventure games, but this is awesome. Hope it works out well for them.
I don't even care about adventure games, but I HAD to donate 15$ just for the videos.
Also I want to see other developers try a similar approach (I'm looking at you, Obsidian.), so the more successful it is the better.
What if Valve doesn't allow this game to be on Steam?

Gabe Newell likes knives.
Double Fine has other games on Steam, once you get your foot in the door a developer can put whatever they want on there. Plus Double Fine are pretty popular.

I don't think I can agree with you on that. Money changed hands and a promise of a product to be delivered. I'm no MBA but a transaction is definitely agreed upon. As for suiting to everyone's taste? While it's impossible to do but it has to be something they strive for. By putting in the money upfront, there is an expectation involved, so I'm very interested to see the reaction.
the faq says any extra money could be used for more content like more voices etc. I guess it'll have more polish as well.So here's a thought :
If they were asking for $400 000 and end up with closer to almost ten times that amount. Surely we'll get more than "just one" game from this? Or is it wrong of me to thing that?

Double Fine Adventure has broken Kickstarter records for most funds raised in 24 hrs & highest number of backers! kck.st/A9k3jH

I'd assume the same but maybe they'll just increase the budget and make something more elaborate.
I don't think they'll get four million dollars as funding, but I don't see how your scenario is not possible. They already said that iOS and Mac versions of the game were the first things on the list as something to use the extra funding (if any) for.
However, what will they do is up to them.

I'm fairly sure they'll make atleast 2 million. Let me rephrase that, if they don't have 2 million 33 days from today I'll be shocked.
Ah that would be nice, a more fleshed out product the more funding they get sounds good.

ok, yu suzuki, you know what to do
They'll figure that with that much money, they would better make an AAA blockbuster first-person shooter with top of the line voice-acting by Nolan North.
I much rather have a fully voiced game than two silent games. I really hope they polish the game with the extra money.

Pretty sure Tim was saying on twitter about Localizations after mac/ios versions
They need to keep the project feasible, so they won't (and they shouldn't). Additional money can be used for voice acting, localization, ports and advertising. Or, if they really get a shitload of money, for another similar game once this one is out.I'd assume the same but maybe they'll just increase the budget and make something more elaborate.
A Nolan North cameo should be in the game anyway. They'll figure that with that much money, they would better make an AAA blockbuster first-person shooter with top of the line voice-acting by Nolan North.

Plus this is inherently anti-capitalist. If the game is already funded what motivation is there to make it good? Did I wake up in China?
