Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter project by Double Fine [ended, $3.3 Million funded]

Not at all, but this is a business after all, so certain formality should be observed. I don't think there is anything wrong in fans being prudent by expecting a pitch to contain more than just a concept. People haven't even taken into account basic things like the setting, and I doubt you can honestly say that out of the 14000+ contributors everyone will be 100% on board with a space zombie theme (or whatever they end up with) :P
But it's not really a business transaction and the game does not need to suit everyone's taste. And yes, less known developers have to shown the actual concept if they want to collect money this way but if they continue to work on their reputation I'm sure they'd be able to pull off something similar after 20 years and a number of released excellent games.

LOL, when I went to bed last night this was at 250k. I won't be surprised if this reaches a couple of millions by next month.

Wow! Look at all that adventure videogame money!

I wonder how important or prominent the community feedback loop is going to be over the development of this project. Not too much, I hope - I trust Tim & co. with the funny and the puzzles over random internet superfans, myself included. Having a window into the process is reward enough, I don't really need to input my 2 cents every step of the way.

I don't even care about adventure games, but I HAD to donate 15$ just for the videos.
Also I want to see other developers try a similar approach (I'm looking at you, Obsidian.), so the more successful it is the better.

someone should start a total kickstarted by DF pool. whoever is closest to their closing total wins bragging rights.

My prediction is that they make 1,141,141 dollars by TUESDAY MAR 13, 8:00PM EDT.

OH SHIT I just got my Neogaf account activated today, AND I just contributed $30 to this! Double Fine is my favorite developer, have loved all of their games equally, even Brutal Legend.

What a great day! :D

Holy shit. I leave the thread and the kickstarter project has already reached 600k dollars? In under 12 hours?

4chan. Reddit. GAF. Twitter. On my facebook feed. Fuckin' everyone knows what the fuck is up:

Adventure games have been away for too long.

THEY SHALL RISE AGAIN. LIKE THE PHOENIX!

WOOOOOOOSHHH!

Obsidian should do one to buy the alpha protocol license from sega and make a sequel

Double Fine has other games on Steam, once you get your foot in the door a developer can put whatever they want on there. Plus Double Fine are pretty popular.

This is also exactly the kind of thing that Gabe was proposing not too long ago, so there's no way he'd deny them a spot even if they weren't already on there.

I don't think I can agree with you on that. Money changed hands and a promise of a product to be delivered. I'm no MBA but a transaction is definitely agreed upon. As for suiting to everyone's taste? While it's impossible to do but it has to be something they strive for. By putting in the money upfront, there is an expectation involved, so I'm very interested to see the reaction.

The only expectation people should be having is that Double Fine is making a point and click game and it will be out, most likely, by the end of the year.

So here's a thought :

If they were asking for $400 000 and end up with closer to almost ten times that amount. Surely we'll get more than "just one" game from this? Or is it wrong of me to thing that?

the faq says any extra money could be used for more content like more voices etc. I guess it'll have more polish as well.

I'd assume the same but maybe they'll just increase the budget and make something more elaborate.

I don't think they'll get four million dollars as funding, but I don't see how your scenario is not possible. They already said that iOS and Mac versions of the game were the first things on the list as something to use the extra funding (if any) for.

However, what will they do is up to them.

well, given that $300,000 is pretty low for a video game budget, i hope they'd spend all that hypothetical money on this one game. if it's good, i'd gladly chip in $35 again if they need to do this for the sequel.

Ah that would be nice, a more fleshed out product the more funding they get sounds good.

I'm fairly sure they'll make atleast 2 million. Let me rephrase that, if they don't have 2 million 33 days from today I'll be shocked.

They'll figure that with that much money, they would better make an AAA blockbuster first-person shooter with top of the line voice-acting by Nolan North.

I much rather have a fully voiced game than two silent games. I really hope they polish the game with the extra money.

*pledges more*

Oh of course, I agree.

Pretty damn proud to say I'm supporting this, even though I could only afford the $15 tier. Exciting times, gaffers.

So, then... Just a regular Thursday for you, then?

EditL FUCK, BEATEN BY DASCU! D:

Pretty sure Tim was saying on twitter about Localizations after mac/ios versions

Yeah. I hope they can bring in some good voice actors, with some HD 2D art and soundtrack... And then put the rest of the money on Psychonauts 2!

They need to keep the project feasible, so they won't (and they shouldn't). Additional money can be used for voice acting, localization, ports and advertising. Or, if they really get a shitload of money, for another similar game once this one is out.

A Nolan North cameo should be in the game anyway.

well, i'd argue that the better the final product turns out to be, the more likely people are to donate again should Double Fine want to kickstart another game. it's truly in their interests to make the game as good as possible.

I'd rather them use the extra money to make one awesome polished game, rather than multiple games. I would also like them to use the money to get the game running on Mac and iOS.

I haven't really been a fan of DF's creations from Brutal Legend to the present. But if we're talking an adventure game in the vein of Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle then this changes everything. I will gladly invest in something like that.

Plus this is inherently anti-capitalist. If the game is already funded what motivation is there to make it good? Did I wake up in China?

Oh and by the way. I just had to mention that out of all of the stupid things I have ever read on NeoGAF, and possibly the entirety of the Internet, this ranks right up near the top. Huzzah to you, sir.

I love this model for game development, it is a win-win for both the developers and the fans. Music artist have done the same thing on sites like pledgemusic.com with a lot of success. There are certain game developers that I trust/like so much that I will almost always prepay for a game to fund the development for $15, and this is an example. I kinda wish someone like Roberta Williams would have done the same thing to make a new King's Quest game the way she wants it, although Telltale taking over it is still cool.
