I haven't bought an anime since robotek when I was like 12. I think my distinction in terms of animation quality has more to do with things looking natural. The kind of coloring you see in the stuff like robotek just looks better to me, rather than the clearly computer coloured shit like geass where everything is very very clean, like its been painted with a fill in tool.
I associate it with the movement though, the way the colours work with the background (and the fact that the backgrounds were actually hand drawn). Im not an animator so I don't have the vocabulary to properly explain my position.
That reminds me of the scientific consensus on noah's ark that states that if a global flood were to actually happen as described in noah's ark, fish would be extinct / wouldn't survive such a catastrophe.. maybe that ties into the whole noah's ark and lack of faith allusion.
This is all true, I guess mainly I'm uncool with her hatin' on Eva and fangirl worship for Baccano, Monster and Christopher Nolan, all of which I consider to be essential components in a noxious loldeep diet.
I think its less that she outright hates Eva, and more that she finds it split between being "The best monster of the week show ever" and "Critically flawed because of the core philosophy behind it." I mean, just watching the review, I can't say I really disagree with any of the criticisms she brought up about Eva. Baccano is just a lot of fun. I don't think she's ever claimed that it was anything more than that, just that it was mindless violence done fantastically well, which I agree with. Still working on Monster.
Well apparently oshii was a believer but gradually lost his faith later on.. maybe it was because he realized the impossibility of noah's ark and then made a film vaguely related to that notion later on?! as for the actual film itself - pizzaroll did give me a funny interpretation about "the man" being noah himself, the last shot of the
"ark" you told me about earlier, could somewhat be interpreted as indication that the world itself is a post-flood world.
He was going to be a priest apparently! The movie may as well be Oshii before & after - the girl & the man, innocent & weary. That still fits in with my allegorical interpretation, but it makes it a little more saddening if it's a reflection of his life. I don't normally like using outside material for interpretation, but that IS a very interesting and kinda unavoidable conclusion.
DragonBall/DBZ/DBGT are one of the worst anime ever created by humans, and dogs.
Dragonball series was my favorite anime when I was a kid. I remember I used to run from school to my home so I could catch all the episodes on Toonami. I actually saw all the episodes in all three series, including the movies. Recently I decided to watch it again, and my god, it's so horrible. The plot is non-existent, the animation is horrible (granted, it's an old anime, but there are a few animes from that time that look much better), the script is embarrassing and the fights are meaningless. We have them screaming for 5 episodes, 5 minutes lasting 20 episodes, same pattern repeats on all sagas. The only reason I actually tolerate this anime anymore is for nostalgic reasons, other than that Toriyama should hide in a cave and never come out again. The only good thing Toriyama has done is make other mangakas go into the manga business (Tite Kubo [Bleach], Masashi Kishimoto [Naruto], Eichiro Oda [One Piece], etc)
Not sure what anime your watching now adays but it still holds up very well compared to the stuff coming out today even know it came out in the 80s (db 86 and dbz 89).
Here's a controversial opinion: They should take fanservice out of all anime. Keep that stuff on the internet where it belongs, or at least don't be so obvious about it. Is it possible to have a strong female character beat some ass without showing 5 panty shots to compensate?
I know it is, just make it more frequent.
Also, female/female fights. I want a girl to beat a man, no tricks or team-ups necessary.
Started watching Cowboy Bebop and it's quickly falling into the category of overrated animes like some some people here already told me.
Given that I'm only in episode seven but I have hard time continuing from here since I pretty much have liked only one episode and that was Ballad of Fallen Angels. That was followed by Sympathy for the Devil and Heavy Metal Queen, both were just terrible.
edit. I have to say the world and the characters are rather awesome but the stories have been just awful. Samurai Champloo is waaaaaay better.
Its more than that though, its the quality of the key frames. I was just watching deno coil. that is a show, it has really nice animation. Why cant we have that?

In one episode goku has golden hair and the next episode his hair is white, or his hair is like 2 feet tall in one episode and the next episode is like 6 feet tall. The animations completely change from one episode to the next and is not consistent. I wouldn't mind if the change were from one saga to the next, but at least try to stay on track from one episode to another. It has even happened in the same episode. We also see a difference in muscle mass, weight, height, colors, hair, etc.
How do you go from this
to this
to this
and finally
Edit: Forgive me if I'm not allowed to post pictures, I'm still confused as to what post is allowed, what sizes, what sites, etc.
That's the nostalgia blinding you, it was like that for me, and its like that for a lot of people I know. So you're saying you don't notice the extreme differences in his hair? not even the color? So do you think DBZ has an excellent storyline?
Edit: It's probably me I guess. After watching so many different anime series, I guess the newer animations spoiled me. The animation may not be an issue for everyone but the story? come on...that can't be excused, not even because it was an 80's anime.

The first three pics are very similar and the 3rd pic was made high-contrast/high-brightness by whoever uploaded it. What are the differences, again?
The last picture definitely has a color difference.
My controversial opinion is .. wait for it .. despite loving anime for a while I now find almost all anime to be insufferable. Bad stories, poor melodrama, bad character designs, bad character archetypes, and overtly creepy tendencies

Because of his unique "full limited" animation style...
Wiki said:
Mitsuo Iso is known for his jerky yet detailed animation, full of dense sophisticated motion. He refers to his own style as "full limited" or "full 3-frame". In traditional animation, animation with a drawing count below one drawing every two frames (or "on twos") is considered limited animation. Working on threes and fours, Iso draws every keyframe without passing his work to an in-betweener, allowing him full control to create the most detailed motion possible with the fewest number of drawings, hence the term "full limited".

That's not really controversial except the part of not having female/female fights doesn't make much sense. The other thing is that there are many counter-examples to your descriptions. So it's really generalizing.
DBZ is pretty dumb in retrospect. I used to be on the edge of my seat every episode I saw, thinking "Maybe this is the episode where Trunks beats the androids!"
It never was.
Getting older allowed me to see it's all a bunch of angry dudes powering up and punching stuff, saving the world from the villain of the arc. I also agree with Naruto and Bleach being bad; I can't follow Naruto at all unless reading it continuously, and Bleach is just so... tired. But I'll be damned if I let anyone talk smack about One Piece. One Piece is the greatest shounen series of all time. Sogeking for life!
It's simply referred to as "the Sun" (and of course it rises from the ocean and releases steam, why wouldn't it?). As for the statues (?), they appear to be "unknown/unfamiliar gods", as far as the boy is concerned (the girl being the one exception, of course).
(pssst, Miramax IS Disney. [was Disney, the Mouse owned Miramax from 1993 - 2010]. Mononoke was originally released through their Miramax label instead of Disney, like the future releases would be...likely because a) it was sent to theaters instead of direct to dvd or 2) Disney was not happy with the violence and Myasaki refused to let them edit it)
{edit: nvm, looks like the deal between Ghibli and Disney wasn't in affect when Mononoke was released - that would be 2003. Disney's Miramax did distribute Mononoke, however}

Shows that revolve around fanservice aren't my cup of tea, but I think it can be great when it's fit into an already good show. Not all shows should have fanservice, mind you, but I find that most will benefit from it. It's an easy way to get the viewer invested in the characters.
If nothing else, it can be unintentionally amusing in a "Wow. Really, Japan?" kind of way.

It did show up in a few theaters on December 22, 1985, but that was one week after the actual (video) release. Looks like Wikipedia got that one wrong.
Hey, he did write a few novels, you know!
Not that I'd call this one a "novel": it's more like a 150-page picture book. Double-page spreads of Amano artwork with narration from Oshii (about a couple of paragraphs per double-page spread or so?) that go over the story of the OVA (although it abruptly cuts
from the boy breaking the egg to the last scene of him watching the Sun rise: we don't see the girl waking up, chasing the guy, or anything like that
).
EDIT: I just noticed the book was released two weeks before the OVA, actually.
Not like there's an abundance of information around generally.
There's some material out there (I should really try and get my hands on this, this and this, one of these days), but on top of it being... well, what it is, there have been some issues surrounding the rights for many years, and I bet that contributed to the title quickly becoming unobtainable via proper channels / rather obscure...
ANOTHER EDIT: I just found a picture of an obi from back then, advertising Tenshi no Tamago as an "Original Video":
For a weekly cel-animated show like DBZ in the 80s, different teams worked on different episodes. This was the only way to keep the show coming with older production methods. Usually the A team would do the important ones, but if you watch DBZ episode to episode you'll notice an A team/B team pattern.
The inconsistencies in animation quality and art style are most likely a result of this.

Dragon Ball Z is a pretty poor anime by today's standards, but you can't deny the quality of Toriyama's art and ideas. The anime is only based on Toriyama's work, if you want his definitive version of events than head on down to your local bookstore.
Anime and manga owe a lot to Toriyama. Show the man some respect.
His first actual novel was a novelization of the second Patlabor movie, back in 1994 (I believe he came up with a bunch of extra stuff, compared to the movie plot).
I imagine you can still find those on Japanese auction sites. They're out of print, but most of them were re-issued in 2004, so it shouldn't be that hard/expensive. I think.
There was that live-action-interspersed thing called In the Aftermath, which apparently made it even weirder and less comprehensible in the process of trying to commercialize it
Oh, man. I saw that one, like, 15 years ago or so...
From what I remember, it was... Er... Yeah. Not sure why that was made...
(as for "how it came to be made", it seems it has something to do with those right issues I mentioned above ^^;; )
I really don't know all that much... From what I understand, Roger Corman acquired the rights after a screw-up by Tokuma Shoten's Ogata Hideo, and the title then kept going from hand to hand until nobody quite knew what was going on anymore. Apparently, even in Japan, the situation was quite confusing, as the thing actually aired on TV without the original creators being compensated in any way.
I imagine at least some progress has been made since then, seeing how it was (eventually) re-released on DVD in 2001, but...?
Also, why have you spent so much time putting crazed Lost fanboys in their place when you could have been telling me stuff about Tenshi no Tamago? :'(
... is another picture book, this time about the girl's everyday life prior to the events of the OVA. Unlike that other picture book I mentioned above, it seems this one wasn't written by Oshii, but rather by Araki Ritsuko (a.k.a. Shiraki Ruta).
And this:
... is pretty much what you'd expect based on the title.
Also, I said above that most of those four books were re-issued in 2004, but I just double-checked, it looks like they all were, actually. Huh! Should definitely make it easier to chase them down...

As a vehicle for awesome fights to happen, yes I do think it has a good storyline. Prior to the Buu saga, events unfold in a natural way that for the most part does not contradict the rules Toriyama had established. Yes, there is the giant plot hole of EVERYONE forgetting about the Saiyan invasion by the time Cell came around, other than that I would say it's pretty competent.
This is hardly indicative of most anime. I recommend going through that one thread; or, I could probably recommend stuff myself.
This is why long running shounen shows are bad. Not only are they low quality, but they mislead newcomers into thinking every anime is as ugly as their series is.
To be fair, it's all the fault of shounen jump editors who probably demand such character designs. Then again, it's also the fault of the newcomer for not doing any research.

Dragonball Z has no story at all, there is literally no goal in the story. Baddies arrive, you magically get more powerful, and defeat them. Other than the Saiyans and Piccolo, character development halted and the rest of the "Z" fighters became useless, to the point that Tien and Chiaotsu completely disappeared from the series, with one shot shown when Goku is transforming to SJJ3.
Power levels make absolutely no sense. Majin Buu is suppose to be the most powerful of all Buus, yet Kid Buu is shown as the most powerful. Vegeta had the power to destroy planets prior to the Saiyan Saga and their transformations are said to crumble the Earth, yet nothing happens afterwards. Gohan kills an extra cell Jr. that was never created. Only two people are allowed int he hyperbolic time chamber, yet goten, trunks, piccolo and buu go in.
You can see how Dragonball is made directly out of a Chinese legend and on Z it completely changes, like a different universe altogether.
The only one that actually has a story is the original Dragonball, to an extent, and that's only because it's based on Journey to the west.

Super Buu is more powerful than Kid Buu, but the latter is more ruthless and doesn't give a shit about his surroundings since the good personality disappeared from his body.
And I'm pretty sure the hyperbolic time chamber rule was a corruption from the anime that was never established in the manga. Can't blame Toriyama for that.

Mahonay complaint was anime hair and anime eyes which he used ichigo from bleach as an example and pointed out stuff like that key anime and spice & wolf for having it, by anime hair/eyes I think he means non realistic hair or eyes which isn’t exclusive to shounen.
Say what will about his storys, kubo got style when it comes to his character and clothing design.
Still deciding whether to get the cheaper or better boxed version of Jin-Roh. When will it end...? Will I be adorning the walls of my home with Sky Crawlers posters in a few years time?!
are you seriously trying to excuse it by saying that the quality of their artists is simply inferior? I wont argue the point, but thats a pretty weak defense.
Also: fanservice is really sad. How would people react if you put the kind of panty / tit shots into a random respected TV show? Its just stupid. If I want tits I have google.
