Why do so many Doom Bringer get scorched earth instead of lvl doom? It's one of the biggest nukes early game.

less mana cost, heals urself, SE also does more dmg as long as u stay on them, which doom likes to do anyways, also gives bonus ms

I like Tobi more then Purge when it comes to commentating on a tournament game (Purge's Tutorial Videos are great though), but I think we can agree both just stomp all over Luminous. I think I would take the auto director over Luminous.

luminous is great, you just can't see it.

Thanks tonne JT.

I'm Tiny, in a lane up against Drow Ranger and Sniper. Is there anything I can do to get some last hits?

You can get some very frustrating lanes. The best thing to do is not die, get help from other lanes, or roam and gank other lanes. Try to stay in range of creep kills. Tiny isn't excessively item dependent so once you are a few levels in you can get by ganking with just boots.

If its the long lane, you want to ward the creep camp nearest the enemy tower. What they do is pull the creeps at xx:53 seconds out of the camp and stack them. Then they pull those creeps onto their own mobs so their own mobs die to the creeps. When you place an object (such as a ward) in their creep camp it prevents more creeps from spawning, thereby stopping their stacking and pulling. Ideally you want a ward down before the first minute of the game after the creeps spawn.

Always pick your hero with your lane partner in mind. Double melee usually leads to failure. In your case, any sort of range would have been excellent. Drow and sniper suck early and were only able to harass you because of no pressure from a lane partner. Ideal setup for tiny is either to be in a lane with a stunner or mid (though he would lose to most mids, similar to pudge.)

You haven't even said why he's bad, so how can I fill a criteria where I think he's good?

Lumi's good in the sense that he has a very good understanding of game mechanics. His team synergy and pick/ban analysis leaves some room to improve though, and he is notorious for missing kills, but all in all he's a very good caster.

Purge sucks, IDK why you guys like him. Tobi is just loud and excitable, nothing else there, although I applaud his ability to get non-dota players interested in the game. Honestly, the only good dota caster that I enjoyed was MadMortigan.

Here's a pretty good read on casters and why they're all shitty in dota:

I asked this last week but would it be possible to do something like this within the neogaf dota group for the beginners? Watching this was incredibly informative and I can't help but think it would be even moreso as a participant.

We tried doing this a few days ago and people only managed to learn so much. I recall dying a few times while trying to type out tips for the new guy. lol

I think the better idea is to do this against easy bots. You can pause the game and give tips on specific scenarios as you go along without being concerned about the pacing for the other team.

Ah...Voice chat should be a prerequisite for all participants. I can't imagine teaching this game while typing and playing at the same time. Any chance you guys doing this again? Or is this a no go from this point on?

I'm sure some people will be up for it as long as there are people around; it wasn't an intensely planned affair.

Just pop into the channel and ask if anyone's interested; that's all anyone did.

So, here are my general thoughts on DOTA2 after playing a week of beta (mostly just compared to HoN).

The bad:
-I felt like HoN moved in a more overall positive direction than dota by emphasizing faster paced games, more ganking, and "skill shots" on some of their well-designed heroes (and I'd readily acknowledge that many do not fit this description). I really do not enjoy farm-fest games that end with spectre-domination in the 60th minute...this sort of game to me really represents the stagnant aspects of the genre, and i'd like to see it change. I don't have a problem with carries fulfilling their roles, but the game should be able to be won reliably earlier on, so that every game doesn't just devolve into carry v carry. Perhaps there just aren't enough good gank/push heroes implemented yet?

And finally some random questions that have come up:
-How do I whisper another player (who isn't on my friends list)?
-Is there a banlist or any plans to implement one?
-Has icefrog given an ETA on getting SD and other game modes in to the game?
-Were there some console commands that I am supposed to input to make the game more responsive / reduce lag? Also...I don't know how to open the console. :)
-Are there plans to implement a stat tracking system that also matches players according to skill ala PSR in HoN?

This game is very push-and-gank-oriented right now, but you will not see many push-oriented teams in matchmaking, because pubs gonna pub. Most of my scrims end in less than 25 minutes and tend to be action-packed. There are a ton of good push heroes in at the moment (Shadow Shaman, Chen, Enchantress, Venomancer, Dark Seer, Dragon Knight, Nature's Prophet, Broodmother, Leshrac, Beastmaster, Jakiro, Death Prophet, Pugna, Enigma...) and there are even more coming soon. The era of having a hard carry farm for 60 minutes is over a year old.

To your questions:
1. You can't, as far as I know.
2. There is no banlist. There are mute features, and I believe they're trying to figure out the best way to implement a banlist. They're testing this out in L4D2.
3. No ETA on other game modes other than eventually.
4. There is no delay if you're playing on the appropriate servers (as far as my experience as a US player). Can't really stop ping issues if you're playing on Europe servers when you're located in USWest.
5. Unknown.

Also Tobi+Synderen rocks, eff the haters.

I'd just be happy with an update tonight, if we get one just expecting whatever was planned for last week.
you guys leave luminous alone. :O

his sniper may suck, but his casting is awesome.

He needs to be more confident, and project his voice more.

I hope we get at least 1 hero in stable. Bane would be a good choice since he's been done for a while most likely. So he's stable enough I would think.

And hopefully we get the assassins duo in the test client then.

Stable means they have had at least a week of bug testing. So I cant see new heroes going into stable.

Tobi is better.

This Purge guy is better than both of them though.

And WTF at Doom Bringer pick, first time I've seen him since the Internationals.

Tobi without Syn is worse than both. Tobi does teamfights better, but purge and Lumi are better at analysis.

The VS one stands out, but it isn't horrible, it just isn't the way most people play the character. Carry VS still shows up every now and then, Na'vi used that in their game against AL a few days ago even.

Usually the right items are listed, just under situational, and along with a bunch of other items you don't need 9 out of 10 times I suppose. It's fine for new players though, just the order isn't.

Depends on the hero, they're generally decent and very few are completely wrong.

Most of them seem to be missing at least 2 regular pickups under core or situational and tons of why would you ever get this choices under situational.

I think im just really pissed off at the Dark Seer list when I played him the other day.

Tobi + Synderen forever! Hits the best medium between hype and analysis, having both makes for excellent and memorable broadcasts.

Just want to make a minor correction, you should start with Gauntlets of strength, not a Bracer.
Amended!

Yeah, he really needs that Scepter somewhere on the recommended list. It's a constant point of annoyance every time I play him.

Another negative preview of Dota 2. I think having a public beta without any sort of implemented teaching tools was a massive blunder on Valve's part. I've read many negative impressions online and several of my friends didn't enjoy the game because it assumes you are xXxGoSuPr0xXx.

"The interfacing also hurts the game as well, taking up way too much of the screen for comfort. Given the level of zoom on the action, this can lead to situations where you end up clicking on your HUD instead of a spot on the playfield in an attempt to run away."
YES. Fucking YES.

It happens so many times. First of all, the bottom UI just needs to be smaller. It needs to go on a diet. Tons of wasted space dedicated to fancy styling that don't do anything for the gameplay, but cause more precious screen real estate to be consumed. I *always* feel like constricted by the interface and that just shouldn't be. Either allow me to zoom out farther, or shrink the UI. Secondly, there's a portion of the screen at the top that is unclickable despite being able to see the map. On my 1920x1200 screen, it's roughly 20 pixels tall...maybe 25. MANY a time have I clicked there trying to escape only for my character not to move because it's seemingly part of the top menu. (to the right or left of the bottom curvature of the center clock)

Most of the other issues are things you just kinda get used to I've found. But the UI needs to go on a diet, period. there are some other bones I have to pick, but they're smaller issues.

hnrghrgbg It better be a big update next week!!

:lol, expect the servers to be down for like a week. This is what annoys me about Valve, they knew they wouldn't get the update out this week but rather than tell people early they post it at the usual update time.

Next update better have 4 heroes minimum to make up for it.

What I don't get though, they say they need more servers and are doing server upgrades etc. And that the game team is just keeping on working on features/heroes.

..why not just update with that then? Or am I misreading something.

Not to be a white knight here but...

It's a free game.

A free great game.

Let go of the sense of entitlement, and get used to Valve Time.
