Whitney Houston has died

Yeah I'm sure we'll see a lot of squabbles about Nirvana in the wake of Houston's death in other mediums.

Of course every conversation involving hundreds or thousands of people will play out EXACTLY the same... Every conversation digresses at some point. On a message board that is frowned upon in order to keep threads on topic which is fair enough, but in face to face conversations it is how they work.

See, we are now having a discussion about discussions, which is not related to Whitney Houstens death, and yet grew out of comments around that.

Its fun. How many times can you say 'What a tragic waste'?

Just woke up and noticed this weird news... wow.

One of my ex girlfriends took me to a concert of WHitney Houston in 1991 (!). She was still very young and very much on the top of her game. My girlfried had to drag me there cause i didn't like the music at all. But when i was listening to her live, i knew that there would be very few people that would ever sing THAT good.

The others who copied her din't copy the right stuff. WHile some have amazing voices, they ruined every song with horrible, horrible, horrrible ad libs (Aguilera, Beyonce, Carry). Houston, in her early years, really was one of the very best female singers ever.

She had the voice and style. I agree with the shitty ad libs UGH.

Lucky.

... Though I was probably 4 or 5 at the time, so I wouldn't have appreciated it.

For me, tone was what was really set her and Mariah apart from the other singers in their generation. There are other singers who could belt as high or higher, or hold a note as long, or had nearly (no one had as much) power in the midbelt or had a beautifully controlled head voice or whatever else. There are other singers with great musical sensibilities. But I can't think of another singer during the period when they were active that could sing acapella like this or this and sound that pure and rich. Even if Whitney hadn't had the ability to belt it out the way she did, and she just had her tone, she would have been magic.

I agree with all of that except I don't believe Beyonce is in the same league as the others. I don't remember a Beyonce song where she doesn't sing in a very limited, shrill range, at least when she's trying to project some power.

I'd be delighted if someone could provide me an example to prove me wrong.

Her tone is a bit more shrill, but she's singing correctly and she's got a lot of power up there.

This made quite an impression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jR9GKvq-y38
Allthough i don't care much for her music, she does belong in that list i think.

posted yet? It's the first time I see the very young Whitney.

This sucks. She was such a class act for so many years, and then it all went to shit. What a sad fucked up story. I was watching some footage of her on CNN, and realized she was 31 at the time, the same age as me. This was just a couple years before her downfall. Really blows me away.

For anyone that cares, both MTV Jams and VH1 Soul are showing Whitney Houston music videos

And for once in my life, I'm actually gonna watch the Grammys just to see how things will go

Why not just post their duet? Has there even been a better duet?

Man I'm so upset I'm stuck with Direct TV out here in LA. Anyplace just streams VH1 Soul? That's just about the only channel I watch.
Stop hating on Whitney btw. She said it best here

why is it that tmz gets way better detailed reports from the police, medical examiner and family members over the news???
$$$?

:(

Despite her problems, never really saw this happening. R.I.P.
Same here, just woke up to this news.. a bit surreal. It's crazy, my mom is a huge fan and was in shock when I told her about this. I told here 'she's only 48' but before I could finish, my mom told me her age.

She grew up with it I guess and knows the few-year age difference between her and Witney so she knew how young she was.

Anyway, R.I.P, another legend gone..

Damn. =/

I'm Your Baby Tonight

Loved that song so much

Well the Grammy's will do something special tonight

I think I saw her on Wednesdays TMZ show with Ray J (Brandy's Brothers, the guy who made Kim Kardashian famous through that video)

Looks like they had dinner and were getting back together with the way TMZ was reporting it

I... I spent my entire life thinking Whitney Houston was the same person as Mariah Carey... what?

That's quite an insult to Whitney Houston, they also sound and look nothing alike...
I'm surprised that quite a few don't know her, my grandmother is 85, she hates all pop- and modern music and even she knows "I will always love you". When Houston was big, you couldn't escape her if you had a TV or a radio.

R.I.P, I had no idea she was only 48, that's too young to go.

I think it is easy to forget how long it has been since she was really successful. The Bodyguard was 1992. If someone is 20 now, they were only 10 when her biggest song was released. Easy to not know who sings a song from when you are 10.

RIP you wonderful soul

20 year olds now wouldn't have been born in 91 or 92, although your point pretty much stands.

I have so many fond memories of the Bodyguard-era. It's such a shame that the artist who made those memories possible is dead.

Thanks for everything, Whitney.

A sad loss. Her song I wanna dance with somebody was my 1st crush song.

Those were the days, I had my walkman clipped to my belt listening to the song on a cassette and dancing with my pillow

Says she drowned in the bathtub.

The last TMZ said about the situation, we don't know yet if she drowned or died before she was found submerged in the bathtub. But she was found in the bathtub in her hotel room.

The LA Time spoke with Grammy executive producer Ken Ehlrich about their special tribute to Whitney:

LA Times said:
Grammy executive producer Ken Erhlich and his team were scrambling Saturday night to find a poignant and proper way to mark the passing of Whitney Houston and their plan was to have Jennifer Hudson perform a "respectful musical tribute" on the CBS broadcast on Sunday night.

"It's too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years," said Ehrlich, a key figure in the Grammys since the early 1980s.

Grammy 2012: Whitney Houston tribute to be sung by Jennifer Hudson

I read a comment somewhere where a person said that having one well-performed Whitney song would be a fitting tribute. I agree. It's too soon to do something bigger, but I do wonder how other artist will acknowledge her passing during the show.

Says she drowned in the bathtub.

If it's true she had prescription drugs on her, there's a chance they could've induced drowsiness and, stupidly, she took them right before taking a long bath. I've been on several drugs whose side effects are drowsiness and that side effect isn't a joke. At one point a year ago I made the mistake of taking both an anti-anxiety pill and a percocet (I was recovering from surgery) at the same time and promptly passed out in my office for an hour before a colleague woke me up.

wow this is sad news, she will be definitely missed :(

I'm kinda surprised (and glad) all the newscasts here in Spain are opening with this as the big news of the day. She was definitely a big name, so I can't imagine what is it like in the US...

I can only think of Madonna as a bigger female popstar from the 80's & 90's
