Whitney Houston's death turns into some weird Nirvana/alternative debate, fucking internet.
You're right. There is so much to talk about Whitney's career and life for the last 2 decadesl. Oh wait...

Yeah I'm sure we'll see a lot of squabbles about Nirvana in the wake of Houston's death in other mediums.
Just woke up and noticed this weird news... wow.
One of my ex girlfriends took me to a concert of WHitney Houston in 1991 (!). She was still very young and very much on the top of her game. My girlfried had to drag me there cause i didn't like the music at all. But when i was listening to her live, i knew that there would be very few people that would ever sing THAT good.
The others who copied her din't copy the right stuff. WHile some have amazing voices, they ruined every song with horrible, horrible, horrrible ad libs (Aguilera, Beyonce, Carry). Houston, in her early years, really was one of the very best female singers ever.

I agree with all of that except I don't believe Beyonce is in the same league as the others. I don't remember a Beyonce song where she doesn't sing in a very limited, shrill range, at least when she's trying to project some power.
I'd be delighted if someone could provide me an example to prove me wrong.
This made quite an impression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jR9GKvq-y38I agree with all of that except I don't believe Beyonce is in the same league as the others. Lucky.
... Though I was probably 4 or 5 at the time, so I wouldn't have appreciated it.
For me, tone was what was really set her and Mariah apart from the other singers in their generation. There are other singers who could belt as high or higher, or hold a note as long, or had nearly (no one had as much) power in the midbelt or had a beautifully controlled head voice or whatever else. There are other singers with great musical sensibilities. But I can't think of another singer during the period when they were active that could sing acapella like this or this and sound that pure and rich. Even if Whitney hadn't had the ability to belt it out the way she did, and she just had her tone, she would have been magic.
Why not just post their duet? Has there even been a better duet?

For anyone that cares, both MTV Jams and VH1 Soul are showing Whitney Houston music videos
And for once in my life, I'm actually gonna watch the Grammys just to see how things will go
$$$?why is it that tmz gets way better detailed reports from the police, medical examiner and family members over the news???
Same here, just woke up to this news.. a bit surreal. It's crazy, my mom is a huge fan and was in shock when I told her about this. I told here 'she's only 48' but before I could finish, my mom told me her age.
Despite her problems, never really saw this happening. R.I.P.
I... I spent my entire life thinking Whitney Houston was the same person as Mariah Carey... what?
That's quite an insult to Whitney Houston, they also sound and look nothing alike...
I'm surprised that quite a few don't know her, my grandmother is 85, she hates all pop- and modern music and even she knows "I will always love you". When Houston was big, you couldn't escape her if you had a TV or a radio.
R.I.P, I had no idea she was only 48, that's too young to go.
I think it is easy to forget how long it has been since she was really successful. The Bodyguard was 1992. If someone is 20 now, they were only 10 when her biggest song was released. Easy to not know who sings a song from when you are 10.

LA Times said:Grammy executive producer Ken Erhlich and his team were scrambling Saturday night to find a poignant and proper way to mark the passing of Whitney Houston and their plan was to have Jennifer Hudson perform a "respectful musical tribute" on the CBS broadcast on Sunday night.
"It's too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years," said Ehrlich, a key figure in the Grammys since the early 1980s.
