I find it sort of hilarious that some people still think it's ever gonna be released
At this point in time it'll end up being cancelled or moved to PS4/720/WiiU
Every time Square/Nomura talk about those types of things as "updates" or make it sound news worthy I wonder what kind of bubble they do they live in?Last I heard, Nomura was finalizing the story concept and setting. They are currently running tests on their engine to create "hd worlds." Airships and chocobos are being implemented, but it is taking longer than expected. They are also introducing new lighting elements. Final character costumes are soon to be finalized, and cutscenes are being redone. The game is about to enter the second phase of "full production." where artists can finally see the game in some kind of state and elaborate, discuss and reiterate. The team is hard at work, sleeping under their desks every night, and they hope to be able to show something within the next year.
fuck this game
I don't know why people keep clinging onto it like it's some sort of messiah. Let it die.
Why would the move it to a next gen platform? That would only increase its development time.
We're nearing the end of the generation and so far there are no signs of the game coming out this year or even next year. Soon there will be new consoles replacing the PS360, so why not just move the game to next-gen platforms to have it ready for launch rather than release it for the older platforms?
It's ambitious in a sense that they are trying to offer the kind of massive world/experience found in PS1 era JRPGs, but with production values, quality of assets & stuff that's expected from a Uncharted like sub-10 hour PS3 shooter, not necessarily a 30-40+ hour RPG with the scope it offers. Plus they are doing a lot of things differently, like moving away from "look how pretty these are" cutscenes into more interactive ones, offering a KH-like battle system but one where you can actually control all characters instead of just one and having the AI do the rest, controllable airships (not just "pick a spot in map" kind), more interactive environments (bridges that collapse and the like) etc. Maybe the features are not completely new to gaming, but it could add up for a pretty impressive overall package. I don't really see any other JRPGs or WRPGs trying to do what Versus is seemingly doing.I really don't think so.
Something like say FFVI or FFVII was way more ambitious for its time compared to what Versus XIII is for this generation if we compare across the whole RPG genre. Of course that's just me speculating based on what we know...the game itself will probably show much more but from what we know so far I think people really overhype Versus XIII sometimes.
I hope its renamed too!
As far as game mechanics go, The World Ends With You and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep are the best action RPGs Square has ever done (though, Secret of Mana's atmosphere still tops those two). FFXIII is a huge step behind from XII, but XIII-2 takes a few steps into the right direction again. Dissidia is a really great 3d brawler, 3rd Birthday is a fun but flawed shooter RPG. FF Type-0 is a massive improvement over Crisis Core in pretty much every way, and Crisis Core itself was a decent hack 'n slash.Se doesn't make awesome games anymore: ff13 is steps behind ff before it, dqix is steps behind dqvii and dq8 was weaker than previous dq.
When's the last time you even played Kingdom Hearts? 'Cause if you haven't played at least Birth By Sleep (& KHII Final Mix, which is almost as awesome), then you shouldn't be talking about how "crap" the series is.Yet if ff13 and kh are good for lots of people it's all a different matter with versus which will be a powerhouse. But if some finds kh and ff13 really bad versus cannot become a light of hope Imho. I am part of the second category
They've had a relatively small team working on it for a long time, I don't think the development costs are as big as some are thinking. It's not like they've had a 300 man team working on it for all this time. It started with a small team figuring out the limitations of PS3 and doing some techdemo-y stuff, then after the foundation was done they moved a slightly bigger team on it (from what I've gathered, something like 50 to 60 people), and last summer they seemd to hit that phase in development where they build up the team size for the final stretch of development, where they really start crunching the game together.Does anyone think this'll become multiplat? I mean SE has poured so much resources into this and a PS3 only release might not allow SE to recoup their money back.
THEY don't make it sound news worthy. 100% of the time Nomura is interviewed about some other game (Kingdom Hearts or the like) and then the interviewer asks about Versus XIII ("So what's up with Versus?"). He's not just going to say FUCK OFF to the interviewers, so he gives a bit of an update on what they've been doing recently. It's the sensationalist news headlines like "NOMURA TALKS ABOUT VERSUS" that make them seem like a big deal even though a majority of the interviews are usually about talking completely different projects (Kingdom Hearts, Theatrhythm, Type-0, the like).Every time Square/Nomura talk about those types of things as "updates" or make it sound news worthy I wonder what kind of bubble they do they live in?
They've fixed that already. Really, try to name games after E3 2006 which were announced too much in advance. Not many names come to mind, if any.SE has a nasty habit of announcing games long before any real development begins on them.
Honestly, look at the state of Japanese RPGs in general. Square-Enix is the only company pushing out the real quality JRPGs right now. Sure, they're fucking up in some ways, but S-E isn't nearly as bad as you people are saying. Also, the Versus team is entirely different than the team working on XIII and XIII-2, so don't expect the same results.
But just because a new generation of systems come out doesn't mean games for the old ones automatically stop being made/bought.
It would be absolutely hilarious and sad at the same time if this game turns out to be a disappointment when it comes out.
No, but as it is, we have no idea if this game will even be out before next-gen consoles. Well, in fact it won't, as WiiU will be out before VsXIII anyway. So move it to next-gen consoles to have it ready as a launch title, or just cancel the damn thing and be done with it.
I expect results similar to kh: disappointing and uninspired
Final Fantasy XII was released a year after Xbox 360 arrived and close to PS3's launch in Europe & North America, yet that didn't stop it from selling millions of copies and being one of the best JRPGs of all time, after a similarly long (& troubled) development cycle as Versus XIII.No, but as it is, we have no idea if this game will even be out before next-gen consoles. I'm totally expecting a FFXIII Versus for X360 announcement at E3.
Square-Enix wasted a lot of their resources and time on this project, one obvious way to recoup some the losses is by porting it to other feasible platforms (X360).

FFVIII was also released a couple months before the PS2 and FFIX was released after the PS2 came out.
Not a math major, huh?wow, has it really been eight years already? Unbelievable.
What is Nomura's stand on the 360 anyways? I've never really heard him talk about it that I can remember.
Not a math major, huh?
Just think of the guy who bought a PS3 for The Last Guardian, XIII and Versus XIII.who out here bought a ps3 for this game?
ahuahuahauhauhauha
Neva forget:
Final Fantasy VII 1997
Final Fantasy Tactics 1997
Einhänder 1997
Xenogears 1998
Parasite Eve 1998
Final Fantasy VIII 1999
Front Mission 3 1999
Chrono Cross 1999
Parasite Eve 2 1999
Vagrant Story 2000
Final Fantasy IX 2000
Final Fantasy X 2001
Kingdom Hearts 2002
They cranked out games like mad back then. This generation really screwed them over.
Not a math major, huh?
Isn't it really common for prices to fall quickly in the UK?
Just think of the guy who bought a PS3 for The Last Guardian, Monster Hunter 3, XIII and Versus XIII
He must be pretty crushed right now.
... Fuck.
Well, it feels like it's been eight years, at least. :/

LOL Square, what happened to you?
LOL Square, what happened to you?
We need to hire ninjas and spies to infiltrate Square Enix and see what's up on Versus XIII.
My guess? Multiplatform.
There is no way that one is still on PS3 only.
Don't worry, it'll be 8 years whenit finally comes out.SE announces it'll be out in about two years after that

January of last year when they showed the gameplay trailer, Nomura claimed he's standing his ground on what platform it's exclusive to, so I'm not really sure. It doesn't matter either way, of course.
Because titles like The World Ends With You, Dissidia, Deus Ex, NiER, XIII, XIII-2, Dragon Quest IX, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Final Fantasy Type-0, Chaos Rings and more are indeed great games. And, they're part of the few japanese developers out there that still supports HD consoles and west gaming market.

Take a look at Squares performance this gen, how could the game be anything other than a disappointment?
