SSX Demo: Feburary 21; (Euro PSN) February 22 [Up On Xbox Live/PSN]

I got 1:48.46 already. Same exact route except I didn't hit the tree and played it bit more smoothly.

To get off the rail hit Triangle.
thanks!
i keep trying but this is the only time i can get :P http://i.imgur.com/izNf7.jpg
With the standard controls, are people using A or the right stick to jump?
X/A. It just feels really weird using the right stick, too much going on with the controller to do it.

This game seems less like a snowboarding game and more like a racing game in the context of snowboarding. It's a shame because this is, IMO, the closest any snowboard game has come to Skate controls, and I would give a limb for these controls to be used in a realistic snowboarding game, ala skate.

Amped 1 & 2 says hello (while 3 dies in the corner).

Does anyone know what would cause me to no longer be able to start threads or send/receive PM's? It just started this morning, and I can't PM any mods to try and find out why this has happened. Whenever I try, it tells me that my PM quota is full, even though I only have 91 PM's total.

I'm really sorry for posting something so off-topic, but I've got nowhere else to turn. Help me, SSX-GAF! I just want answers.

Keep working on it. It's not that hard imo. You want to find the fastest route through the track that also allows you to stay grounded most of the time while starting Tricky when needed. I think I can get 1:47, maybe 1:46.

Wow! So clean. The several times where you almost clipped yourself were awesome. It was neat to see you take the far right out of the tunnel near the end. Gonna throw that into my line. :P

A (well, X actually, since I'm on PS3). Using the stick doesn't feel right to me, even though it may in theory be a more natural mapping between input and result. To me, sticks are meant to be used for moving, aiming, etc. For other types of actions, buttons feel much more satisfying and "right". Also, pressing a button to perform such an action will always be more reliable than moving a stick to emulate that button (which seems to be what SSX is doing - the stick being analog doesn't make a difference, from what I can tell).

has there been a performance comparison between the ps3 version and 360 version yet? im assuming the additional content for ps3 is due to an inferior port, like with most multiplat games

You should do some research into past multiplatform games from EA like Dead Space 2 and NFS Hot Pursuit.

Oooh god, it's so hard not to turn on my PS3 and just check RiderNet just to see if I've been beat..

Where can you check that in the demo? Is it possible to compete in a Global Event in the demo? I only saw the one race and one trick event, and both of them just had me competing against myself.

That's not why, those deals are made long before they know the game's quality on respective builds. LA Noire had exclusive PS3 stuff, and was better on there. That's all just business bullshit.

So after posting 18 million on Bulldog (stupid ravines killing my line!) I decide just to mess around and explore. Got myself into Super TRICKY so I had enough boost to go uphill...

Found some pretty neat areas on the right side at the top of the dam. I'm guessing this is where one of the other runs feeds into this one. (If you check the map before entering Bulldog, you'll see that a few runs "Zombies With Jetpacks" and another one feed into Bulldog.) There's more kickers, a bunch of snowflakes, and even pipes that you can ride inside of, almost like a water slide. They're really dark inside though!

I stayed right as much as I could and had a pretty good time just going through the more "natural" stuff. Very plain because you're obviously not meant to go there, but I thought it was a relaxing diversion.

A true HUDless, pointless, slightly slower free ride would really be gold.

Those of us over at the hardcore community (MerquryCity.com) have made it clear that we want a HUD-less option. The developers responded by saying they would try to patch it in. The developers have been pretty keen in listening and keeping in touch with us so I'm really optimistic about it.

And nothing's stopping you from free riding. :P Just hop out the helicopter, let the AI and ghosts ride away, and do your thing! You're going to need to explore a good bit to find all of the 599 hidden snowflakes anyway. c:

I agree with the rails complaints. In both Race It and Trick It, they unhinered me much more that they helped. It's simply too easy to get on them when you aren't even trying.

To grind trees and other things that aren't rails, you have to press a button. Would have preferred if it that way for rails too.

Yeah, I kind of agree with this too. The bit of magnetic "help" has saved my ass more than a few times, but I wish you would have to hold LT for it to engage.

One of the weirdest control inconsistencies is that rails are automatic and terrain is not. I fully understand why the developers did this, but I feel it complicates things more than it helps.

One tip though, is that to dismount rails, simply press LT+any direction on the LS and you'll dismount in that direction. For terrain edges, simply let go of LT and use LS to guide yourself when dismounting.

With the standard controls, are people using A or the right stick to jump?

I have to use A to jump since pre-winding with the R-stick doesn't appear to work all the time and it frustrated the hell outa me. For tricks I use the R stick though since its so much easier and more intuitive than using buttons.

Finally tried the demo.
Can't get comfortable with the controls.
The last snowboard game i've played was Amped (1) on Xbox, and before that, Cool Boarders 4 on Ps1, so it's been a while, but still, the standard controls are supposed to be kinda like SKATE, but at high velocity i can't seem to naturally "feel them", while the classics (never having played an SSX) are even weirder to me (dpad to rotate?).
I guess the closest connection my brain does when in the heat of the race, is Tony Hawk games, looking at how i instinctively get the buttons wrong.

Another thing that bugs me is the steering, it seems that even when i want to just adjust a little bit (say, to catch a rail) i turn almost 90°, goddamn.
So i end up going left and right like a mad man, lol.
The rest looks pretty cool.

I tried this approach too, but it seemed to me that if I used the button to jump (in standard) instead of the stick , I ended with a much weaker jump that what you can accomplish with the stick... at least that's how it felt to me... so in the end I returned to the stick and I have gotten used to it....

Are you using jump (A button) in conjunction with a direction the Left analog stick? That's how you get huge jumps/spins.

A HUD-less option would be so sweet. Some people have criticised the game's visuals but I think it's beautiful. Little details such as how flakes of snow on the ground catches the light and sparkles really helps to bring the look of the game alive. An option to be able to snowboard in that environment without the 'clutter' would be fantastic.

Has there been any confirmation via review copies that confirm equality with both standard and classic control modes? At least in the demo, you certainly spin/flip nearly twice as fast using standard.

It should be allright in full. Dont have link to merq city, but Todd Batty posted answer and is/was looking into that.

I just played the demo and I have to say WOW! I'm really feeling it! It plays just like I remember the old games playing (more like the original SSX which is a GOOD thing) and it looks fantastic. I love that the characters are older now too. Elise is 33? How cool is that? I remember when she was still in her mid twenties!

Really really loving the demo. I got like 8 friends who all performed pretty well in the events and I'm having fun running them all down.

I think I've got to find a way to buy this on Tuesday. Already got Mass Effect 3 and SFxT on March 6, how am I going to afford all this?!?

yako591 from MC post 30,000,000 .
Awesome video except it really points out a major problem I have with the game. Previous SSX games you could actually see the tricks. This game just looks like a flashy blurry mess of movement.
True all the time i had no clue what tricks woul de look like. The game is fun but hell naw it aint no ssx

Okay, I'm going to criticise this one really hard because it's an extremely weak example.

What you're seeing in the 30 million point video is one of the best SSX players in the world. Two of the developers, who've been playing the game non-stop and know all of the technicalities of the trick system, have 32 and 33 million points in the demo.

The SSX3 video linked is someone who, put politely, isn't that good at the game.

Someone who has 30 million points knows what they're doing, is purposely chaining tricks, doing double-input tricks, and knows that flips are worth more than spins.

My point? It's going to look wonky. That's extremely high-level competitive play.

Watch this SSX3 video and tell me that it doesn't look like SSX.

Probably a stupid question, but is the tutorial hill available somewhere to run again after the tutorial is over? That's the kind of hills I want to see, albeit steeper and longer.

Got the top of the race leaderboards last night then added new friends and now, subsequently, lower down on the list.

SSX GAF is going to be awesome.

Never played the series, nor am I fan of snowboarding at all, but this looks fun. I'll go ahead and give the demo a whirl tonight for a change of pace.

Forgot to mention btw, turned the audio off last night for the race course and it made me appreciate the game in unexpected ways. There's lots of chatter between the boarders, and the sound effects of the snow, and the pine trees and the helicopter? It's all lovely.

Your stupid ghost is haunting me. I know the line I need to take but I keep getting thrown off by the little blue guy constantly in front of me.

Choose a different ghost? You can select what ghost is displayed by going to the RiderNet wall, and then selecting someone, and then challenging one of their drop records, IIRC.

I didn't even know you were playing on 360. I thought you were on PS3?

If you're on 360 I'll play your ghost right now! I've been busy with school lately and have been receiving something like 30 friend requests a day. :0 I might've missed you!

I've been having a lot of fun with the demo, even though I can barely get passed a 1m score lol. It's been way too long since I've played SSX but I started to get the hang of it especially with button controls. I think it's a bit more enjoyable than stick controls. Didn't know it was coming out so soon to be honest. Hope to pick it up.
