NFL Off-Season Thread: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

He should go with the 49ers, he could probably ride the bench and heal until the playoffs since they already have a automatic playoff spot.

I don't see the comparison between the Eagles and the 49ers "dream team" stuff.

If Peyton is healthy, they have the smartest QB in the league, a good RB, and the best defense in the league. You can easily reach the Super Bowl with that crew.

The Eagles had a bunch of big name free agents that were overpaid for their position.

Not 4! Not 5! Not 6!

I know Denver and Tennessee can afford that...can SF (Probably)?

If he really wants that type of money, we can't afford it. As of this morning we are 18 million under the cap, so he would take less. We also offered a contract to Brandon Lloyd according to La Canfora.

I doubt we are seriously in contention for Manning, just wanted to see what he had in the tank. Seems like he called us up.

edit: Stop it, Plinko. I want to at least sign him before we get jinxed. :)

Again, not making any claim that they'll win it, but it would set them up to not be a surprise like last year.
Sure. Understandable.

Damn why u so salty already?
Far from it. Just making the point that paper champions or offseason "best" teams rarely end up winning it all as folks claim they will. Personally, I think Peyton to the Niners would make a formidable team with that defense which is impressive to begin with.

Which is meaningless. Like I said. Do you know what meaningless means? (there's some salt!)

:JNC

If he really is in this for a Super Bowl, there's no better place to go right now. My guess is that he's holding back yet because he really doesn't want to play in the NFC because of Eli.

We are a formidable team with or without peypey.... Unlike most of the other teams involved

I think Buckethead broke his laptop after his shitty pick played like shit and lost to my brilliant pick.

Sucks to suck!!

I was napping sir, I don't appreciate your 'tude.

I'd agree, but you are set to face more formidable opponents with your schedule and being in the nfc. Sounds like a shoe-in to sign him at this point, no sarcasm either.

We faced tough teams last year. Cowboys, bengals, lions, eagles, giants, ravens, steelers, saints.... These weren't shitty teams. You can say the cowpies and eagles were disappointing but I don't think those were easy games like playing the rams or browns

Sort of like the Pats of '07? The underlying point is that everyone that hops into this thread and says "oh man, that put them right over the top! They'll win an SB with xx" is saying nothing at all.

No team is unbeatable. Period. Top seeding, media favorites or perceived superiority means only so much in the NFL.

Brentech already explained it, but it doesn't matter if they are unbeatable. They will be picked by everyone and their grandma to win the SuperBowl. Anything else will be a major disappointment. The pressure to win it all will be at a height like none other.

Wonder if Montana or Young are helping the Niners recruit Manning. Please make this happen.

Doubt it, but if one of them was, it would be Young.

Montana is still butthurt about how the end of his 49ers career ended and rarely does anything related to the 49ers because of it.

Plus, Montana prefers to stay out of the limelight, which is why you've hardly seen him do anything NFL related since he retired.

Still the best QB to ever play though.

I don't disagree. I think you're in the best position to add Peyton and remain a contender for the time he's there. Though given the relative weakness of both the NFC West and AFC West, the same argument could be made for the Broncos in a lot of ways.

I'm sorry, I just don't know how much I buy into the pressure argument. If your team doesn't have enough "pressure" to win the Super Bowl already, then why are they taking the field and what are the coaches doing? Good coaches make sure the team expectations are set in the locker room, in team meetings and in the position meetings that go on every week as they prepare for their opponents. Not in the newspapers, forums and blogs.

I certainly agree there are pressure situations. Such as a team vying for an undefeated season or something of the like but I think every team has enormous pressure to perform and win the Super Bowl. What the national or local media says should be irrelevant.

The numbers help defend those who question bringing in Manning. I ok with doing so for the right price. However, we should not discount the risk. The 9ers would be changing their offense AGAIN for the what 8th or 9th time since 2005? Every player except for Manning would have to relearn an offense including the HC and OC

^
these are the types of Alex extreme fanboys I've had to deal with for the past 7 years. :/

won't say which message forum I got it from, or who....but this is just ridiculous. Its just another example how some of these supposed "49er fans" care more about Alex, than their 49ers.

So far it doesn't seem like the 49ers are in serious contention. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't initiated by the Manning camp to help with contract negoatiations

I think its gonna be Tennessee or Denver. I wouldn't be surprised if Tennessee is throwing the kitchen sink at him, but I'd like to think Denver impressed Peyton with their commitment to winning, organizational stability, high-quality facilities, etc. Not to mention Denver is beautiful and seems like the type of place Peyton would really enjoy.

I'm not saying Elway is the best GM out there but its pretty obvious he's no Matt Millen. The guy knows what he's doing, and he's built a staff around him that seems very stable and understands what it takes to win.

And if they don't land Peyton, I'd like to see if/how much Tebow improves this offseason.

They would be an awesome regular season team for sure, but I've seen Peyton shut down in the playoffs by good defenses too many times to consider them a lock for anything else.

Titans and Denvers offers are similar from what I understand. Titans offer more money upfront, Denver spaces it out over 5 years. Im not sure if any ownership made it in as rumored. Can't sleep on SF though, they are the team we could be in a few years with some good choices. They are further along.

I didn't watch many Titans games last year, will the addition of Manning be enough to make them into favorites in the AFC South? (Depending of course on the rest of the Texans off-season)

I think with Texans losing some guys makes it a bit closer. I'm not entirely sure though, MechDX, Smokey, or Squicken would have an answer.

Damn why u so salty already? Do you know what the term favorite means? It doesn't mean a guarantee. It just means on paper this is the best team. I doubt we get peypey anyways!
I was going to say this more or less. Nothing wrong with a little predicting and prognosticating in the off season.

Hey look, it's every post about the Eagles from last year's thread.

And Niners are actually different. They were the #2 seed and were two special teams fumbles away from the SB. They actually have a defense and a running game. They had to limit their offense because of Alex Smith. If they get Manning and he plays only half has good as he used it will still be far better than Smith.

Lets also not forget how the Eagles have Andy Reid at coach. Niners have an actual coach.

Suprisingly not a lot of buzz about Peyton being here around campus.

Jeez, I know it's a basketball school, but you'd think people would give a damn when the
Almost-
GOAT QB comes to town.

Anyone see this?

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/16/vontaze-burfict-bombs-his-pro-day-too/

According to SI.com draft analyst Tony Pauline, Burfict was “not good in position drills” at the Sun Devils’ Friday workout, and Pauline acknowledged that he’s “watering that down.” One scout told Pauline he “actually felt bad for [Burfict].”

Burfict managed only 16 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. With poor measurables and game tape, and suspect on- and off-the-field character, Burfict may struggle to be drafted at all in April.

I can't remember a player who had this bad a downward spiral in the past couple of years. From a possible 1st/2nd rounder to now possibly going undrafted.

I still remember when some people were saying he's a more promising ILB from college than Patrick Willis was. That lasted lol.

As for Manning, honestly I'm biased and have always believed the Niners are one position (QB) away from being dynasty-like dominant, continually favored to make it deep into the playoffs each year, so I would love him on the team.

He needs to think about the length of time he has left (if this is more than about money of course, but I think it is), because honestly, pushing over 3 years is a real wild card, and I'm sure he's aware of this, neck or not. What is the best situation to join into for the next 3 years?

Not to stomp on Denver or Tennessee, but I think the Niners are a far better twilight choice for him.

Has here ever been a case where a young immature NFL player who whined and bitched about not getting paid, got paid stupid money and suddenly became more mature and a better person?

Because I'm saying it right now about DeSean Jackson.

How much of that is guaranteed money?

Of all the contracts given to WRs this is the one you single out? He got less than any of the other big name FA WRs so the Eagles saved there. If they had let him go and then tried to replace him with a big name FA it would have cost more. And while his attitude is questionable and annoying, there is a big difference between a locker room cancer like TO or Moss and DJAX. He was upset about being paid less than a million and wanted a extension. Instead the team said no, signed VY, Ronnie Brown, and Steve Smith. Him acting like a butt hurt bitch was his own fault but its not like he was going TO on the Eagles. He even showed up to camp.

1 bad season out 4 does not mean the Eagles should kick him to the curb. And his own poor play this past season cost them the big bucks so he had no choice himself to accept the lesser contract from the Eagles.

The deal is incentive laded, only 15 million is guaranteed, and just like most NFL contracts the final # doesn't mean shit since majority of the money is at the back end of the contract. I hate on the Eagles FO all the time but this is actually a great deal and they always manage the cap well to the point they are never in trouble.

People are never going to learn to stop crowning champions in the preseason, are they?

Its the off-season and FA just started. What else are people supposed to talk about?

I don't get why people think its so bad to talk about favorites, locks, or predictions. Relax bros this isn't SI or ESPN. Just offering predictions.

I agree with your point but also don't get the hate for what the Eagles did. First of all they don't spend like crazy every off season. They saw an opportunity last year, mostly because the FO had such horrendous drafts the past few seasons the D was completely without talent, so they took the chance.

You could argue they paid too much for some of the guys but explain to me how they picked up the wrong guys. The only signing I never liked, understood, and was against was VY. The Eagles needed an actual back up QB since Vick is always hurt, not someone who needs to learn the position from the beginning.

Keep in mind the Eagles had a horrendous D, with the secondary being especially weak. If anything they didn't go far enough by ignoring LB and not signing any veterans for the wide 9 scheme. And the FAs they picked up really didn't fail. They were all forced to learn a brand new system, under a unqualified DC, and some had to play out of position.

Still none of the moves hindered the crippled the Eagles salary cap or prevent them from making moves or in the future. They didn't sign players past their prime or near the end of their careers. None of the guys are known to have locker room issues.

I always looked at those failures as a team failure. Manning obviously had some huge blunders, but none of those teams fielded great defenses or focused on the run. With the Niners, they already are a good team that was 1 game away from the SB. They play in the worst division in the NFC and have a great D. Completely different than with the Colts where Manning had to carry the whole team by himself.

Wherever Manning goes, as long as it doesn't affect the Eagles, I'll be rooting for Manning and laughing at the Colts if all this blows up in their face.

Can any Miami fans explain to me what they are doing? No Manning, no WRs, and now possibly losing out on Flynn too?

What are the Colts doing? Why re-sign Wayne with no one proven to throw to him? Why did he sign with them to end his career? Why not instead keep Garcon?

Has anyone picked up on this gem from the 49ers worked Peyton article on ESPN?

Manning first visited the Broncos March 9, followed by a visit to the Cardinals, but there were other unreported developments last weekend, such as the Seattle Seahawks parking a jet at an airport in the Denver area in a failed attempt to visit with the quarterback, according to sources.

Peyton Manning, Y U NO get on the plane?

It gets complicated because Manning and Smith share the same agent, Tom Condon, so they’ll have to be playing this straight up: Alex offered X, Peyton offered X+, and no secrets from either one.

I didn't know Alex Smith and Peyton Manning have the same agent...

This so much more fun watching other teams offer steak dinners and blowjobs for an audience with an ancient discarded quarterback.
