I owned an iPad one but sold it on ebay to finance the iPad 3.
The market's clearly going to become commiditized in the future and margins will drop. But comparing it to Apple and the PC space is pretty silly. The iOS app store is the market leader. It's the Windows of the portable space in so far as profitability for developers. First mover status there is incredibly important.

The iPad is cool, but I can play Tic-Tac-Toe on my Toaster Strudel - and they're just as portable.

Well some people buy food before they buy songs on itunes. Dollars lost.
The only point is they both play games, doesn't matter that consoles bring a whole different level of gaming, Apple sells a fuckton.

Sony has lost quite a lot of money this generation. Microsoft hasn't exactly made a lot of money this gen. Nintendo has lost a lot of money from their peak in the last year or so. Publishers are jumping on board the app store. Kiddies want iPhones/iPads/iTouch devices. The future is Apples.

Money that would potentially have been used to buy a gaming console from one of the big 3 is being used to buy an Apple product. The customer has now less money.
This is the same reason people find Call of Duty so annoying, as it takes money that would otherwise have been spread out more is now only being funneled to a single game.
The counter to that is that Apple/Activision is purely expanding the market. Who knows?
Hmm... not a real comparison really. The new iPad costs $499 and above, and already sold 3 millions in 3 days.
If we look at all iPad SKUs (iPad 2 + new iPad), the number should be well above 3 millions because of iPad 2's cheaper price.
I wonder how many iPhones Apple sell every month.

It's just a new iPad guys. Ever so slightly better than last years. Ever so slightly worse than next years.

None of their losses have to do with an iPad.
Sony's loss was due to stupidity.
MS's loss was due to the original XBOX and RRoD.
Nintendo isn't making as much bank as usual due to the 3DS price collapse.
And publishers are still publishing for all those consoles.

Consoles are selling more now than they ever have in the past.
Every bit of data we have suggest this yet people still jump to the conclusion of consoles/handhelds dying.
That doesn't answer the question though.
5 million cars sold in a month. Nintendo is reportedly terrified because the 3DS only sold 4 million in a whole year!

I thought the main anti-COD argument is that so many pubs/devs are funneling their funds in an effort to sell the next COD-like blockbuster? Until the big names start making iOS games instead of console/handheld games, there's little reason to worry.
I love how this iOS versus traditional gaming is breaking down similarly to the Wii vs hardcore gaming though. Remember the comparisons between Wii sales and bread sales in NPD threads? 3rd parties didn't abandon the 360/PS3/PC for the Wii and they sure aren't going to scrap traditional gaming to develop solely for iOS/Facebook/etc.

Mobile is significantly larger than 3DS (which doesn't even register in EA fiscal reports), DS, or PSP for EA.

Good point. It depends how the product is treated by those that count. Is the iPad 2 distinct from the new iPad or is basically the same device. Depending on the current marketing angle I see them defend both positions.
Depends on perspective. For me Joe Average Gamer the developers/publisher that go that route because they smell big money instead of a more distinct route as they would have before that's definitely true.
But from the developers perspective having less money in the marketplace around the holidays is always bad. At least that's what I'm led to believe based on comments made to the press why a company chooses the holidays for their release instead of the rest of the year.
Killing Nintendo? No. Killing Sony? Maybe. Sony tried to play in Apple's court, and just got throttled.
